Why not Leon?

If yo look at other captains on the media, they are not exactly great orators. You don't have to reach the oratory of say Gough Whitlam or Obama to be a footy spokesman, just about anyone could be groomed to the required level. Buckley was the tin man/deer in the headlights when he was first on the footy show. Leon becoming an articulate capt of CFC would be a great example for the indigenous community also - it'd be footy history.
WE still haven't sorted who should be the future c and vc - that's why hopefully Burns can do another year as capt.
To me it's irrelevant if he is indigenous or purple with green spots, he has shown enuf over the last two years to show me that when he runs out to play football wearing those colours, he wants it bad and he wants everyone else to want it bad. Thats what I want my captain to feel. He showed it the other night when others didnt give a rats. Burns shows the same feeling in games.

You have to be careful. To some extent I agree with the 'forget the off-the-field crap' argument but I don't think you can. Gary Hocking was an inspiring on-field leader for Geelong but couldn't handle the captaincy - mainly because he was never comfortable with the off-the-field stuff. Some players thrive on it - not sure Leon would.

Has had two very good years. This one as good as the last. But he isn't Captain material. Extremely quiet bloke (even puts Rowdy to shame) and media shy.

I actually think he's a monty for All-Australian. :thumbsu:

6 days of the week are spent off-field and while its well and good to have an inspirational leader on the field they need to be the same off it,Bucks said during the commentary on Friday said that Leon has been one of the hardest trainers at the club for the past 3 years which is fantastic,

but i wouldn't want to burden a player of his class with external pressures. as captain you are under the spotlight, the moment your form wavers even the slightest your position is questioned and as we have seen on these boards people overreact. And i'm not sure how Leon would handle that situation

I don't doubt Leon is a leader, but you don't have to have the (c) next to your name to lead, i would rather a player that has been in the media spot light and taken it in their stride and can also justify a spot in the team for as long as they are playing, something i believe they are grooming Pendlebury and Thomas for already

please just let us enjoy him for the way he is, currently the AFL's hottest midfielder.

Train hard, play great. Go Leon!

I'd prefer Travis Cloke. Great young player, hasn't messed up off the field and from what i've seen of him in the media he is a good speaker. Could also be a long term leader of the club.

Agree. Cloke and Pendlebury are the two future leaders of this club.

I have talked to Leon many of times (he plays cricket in the nets at my footy oval) and i don't think he is captain material, not basing this on hes infield ability or anything.

Leon just loves playing footy and i think he is quite happy at hes position in the team now.
