Why the Smart hate?

We don't want another ex footballer as the CEO, we need a successful business person who knows how to run a multi million dollar business and who can get the right people into the right positions.

I don't get why he needs AFL experience, that is why we have 12 General Managers.

triggy got the gig in communications off the back of a marketing degree. I think he then beefed that up into some kind of master of business and probably did the Harvard thing that's been popping up with noble discussions. I think triggy was selected as ceo very early in his comm's role and he was 'tooled up' to be handed the ceo job. fact is that this is triggy's only real experience with how business works and it worked very well for him. well, at least in getting the job, didn't seem to help him to achieve at a particularly high level within it.

everything that has been coming out of the club over the past few is about up-skilling incumbents and planned hand-over's. whether that is board led or triggy led, it might be something that is about to change. we can't keep suggesting roo is solely responsible for some of the changes that appear to be in the wind, but a new face with fresh ideas and the right personality can have dramatic effect in a short time. a typical board conversation or email discussion could go like this;

chappy - ok everyone, triggy's resigned, he's off to the blues, so it's time to talk replacement.

director 1 - lucky we've had smarty in the coo role, nobes has finished his Harvard thingy and the gm of hr is quality as well, that's 3 very good candidates to choose from.

roo - (genuine question) why would we be choosing from only those 3, wouldn't we go to market and see what's out there?

director 2 - it's how we operate roo. we identify good talent within our workforce, upskill them and provide them with advancement opportunities. it's best practice HR and we keep our employees for much longer than average. it works.

roo - I couldn't give a shit. it's not working, have you seen our on-field results, our diminishing financial performance. outside of the move to ao, which areas of our operation are setting industry benchmarks?

director 3 - look roo, you're new, you'll get the swing of it. running a football club isn't just about football, there's so much more. it'll take a while, but you'll get your head around how we operate around here. we all do an exceptional job from the chairman down to the boot-studder. upskilling from within is a tried and true method, simply mate, it works.

roo - yep, well I disagree, I think we need to get the best people possible in the right positions and that means looking outside of these walls to attract the best candidates.

chappy - well, I suppose we could commission a recruitment firm and have a look. let's put it to a vote, motion is commissioning a recruitment firm, proposed by.......

Nigel didn't handle the Guernsey thing well at all imo. Whilst we want a strong leader who will fight for AFC saying ' I don't care ' simply looked childish. You can be strong and assertive without being a tool. If we had the arrangement in writing and had contingency plans in place for a very likely negative reaction then I'd be backing him. He showed nothing in that episode to suggest he has the right temperament or skill set.

Roo has done well in a business sense, on that back of opportunities afforded to him through his outstanding football career (ironically mentored by another board member). But let's be honest - he is not sitting on that board on the strength of his business acumen or experience. It is largely a profile based appt - plain and simple.

Any suggestion that he could teach (or has taught) his fellow board members a thing or two is ridiculous.

I'm not against Smart as such, I just don't want to see the club filling the voids with insiders, we have an opportunity to bring fresh ideas to the club, yes insiders will find their voice in the absence of others but brining in a successful outside with broad knowledge could help the club expand and grow financially at a greater pace. Even if Smart gets top job, give him an outsider with 10+ years experience who can help carry the burden and further remove the club from the tampering that their predecessors tarnished the club with.

It is incredible with our history and "monopoly" supporter base and that we are not more successful and are unable to wield the power in the AFL that the Hawks and Pies and Sydney do.

Trigg's replacement is extremely important to the club's medium term future and, dare I say, ultimate survivability!

Dunno how to selectively quote, so apologies. But yes on the bolded bit, we do need to throw off much of the small time parochial identity we have embraced and continue to foster. We need to join the national stage and I am in favour of strong connections to the eastern seaboard power base. So a CEO from Vic or elsewhere is probably a good thing (provided the guy is not related to Marcus Clarke) Lets rebuild our status with the AFL and national media. Lets assume our position as the biggest team here in SA but also set ourselves to take on the mantle of a powerhouse club in AFL. An independent club free of any SANFL identity connotations and authentically able to present ourselves and win support right across the country.
Things are happening and it is looking good, but they must get this appointment right.

this is ridiculous. They have already said it will be an open process. Just because roo was outstanding player doesn't mean he is leading the way on the right process for recruiting the CEO. If an internal applicant wins the role it will be against an open field. This has been publicly stated and we don't have reason to believe otherwise.

This is the best way to build and retain the culture. It is okay to bring in outsider from time to time, but I want my footy club to promote from within and retain its culture and history.

Successful corporations promote from within, and any senior manager worth his salt will have a succession plan with one or more of their subordinates groomed to take over. Parachuting in senior staff should only happen on a rare occasions, as it is a sure fire way to promote disharmony within the group.

I think he's a knob - but plenty of successful people are.

But he's gross inexperienced and lacking in qualifications and a history of success in the business world.

When you say open process it is my understanding that they aren't going to an external recruitment agency and that the recruitment will be done by members of the AFC board. I am concerned if that is the case.

I don't disagree, and if you are going to parachute someone into a role, then the CEO would be a suitable position. I was just trying to make the point that there is a lot of bleating on this forum about the AFC being a Boys Club. It is unjustified criticism IMO and certainly something I don't have a problem with.

Promoting from within is fine and all, but they (the former player) needs to have some sort of qualifications and/or experience in what they're applying for. Coaching roles are one thing because their footy experience and skills immediately lend to that, but when you're talking about the corporate side of things, that's another thing entirely. I've seen nothing in Smarts resume that'd make me want to hire him as a COO, let alone as the CEO of any company that is of the size of the AFC. There is absolutely nothing Smart has accomplished outside football that would make me believe they gave Smart the COO job because of it. He was given the job because of who he is and they hoped he'd grow into the role and become a capable COO and then CEO. Maybe that could have happened with Triggs original "3 year plan" that he had at the start of the year, but not now.
