Why did we match Thursty onto Williams and Mcguane onto Ruffhead...I would have thought the other way around surely..Thursty has been good on the likes of Fev, Thomo, Rocca..similar frames to Ruff yet he goes to Williams, I cant figure than one out...I like Lukeys contesting however he is bloody slight and should mark a 3rd or 4th forward

Watch the replay! Thursty was on him for 3 of the goals he kicked! McGuane >>> Thursfields today! I thought THursty had a down game!

After a good start to the year, Thursty has been ordinary the last 2 weeks. Although I think we really need Rance. Hopefully he will come on next year to replace McGuane in the team

are u sure about that, i was there, certainly in 2H Thursty was on williams

Positive, the reply will confirm it for you! Those 2 crucial goals in the last 10 minutes were while thursty was on him and I'm quite sure the one in the third might of been! But the 2 last quater goals were definately on him!

No they were not, it was Mcguane on him in final q ...I was right over it at the Hawthorn end

Thursfield was still on Williams, I remember cos someone kicked it over Roughy's head and it landed in William's lap and Thursty had no chance.

guys richcogs is right thirsty was on roughead when he kicked those two crucial goals. Williams went off and TW took McGuane off and shifted thirsty on 2 RH. once Williams come back on the matchups went back to normal but it was of course 2 late. did not think it was a great bit of coaching IMO.

HOPEFULLY Rance is the player we all hope he is.

Think it's pretty obvious we need a bigger type defender down there.

As good a job as Thursty, McGuane eand Moore are doing, I think playing against bigger bodies week in, week out will seriously take its toll by season's end!

I agree with you 100% Goldust. We need a couple of gorillas down back for the Rougheads and Browns of this world. Hopefully both Rance and Gourdis can provide both strength and speed that we lack with our KPP. What is definitely lacking is leg speed with our big guys (Richo the exception). Our little guys are very quick but even someone like Roughead is extremely quick off the mark for a big man, not mentioning of course, the freak called Franklin. Polak and Patto are not speed demons and neither is Schultz. Although Rance's 20m time was average at the preseason testing he has worked on that and has improved a lot from what I hear. Gourdis is the fastest 192-4cm player in the league. He just needs to refine his defensive game.

Bo and others who agree with him, surely the fact that Roughead kicked 2 goals on Will in 2 mins when McGuane was off the ground would indicate that it was in fact the right decision to have McGuane on him all day. The only error that was made in hindsight is not taking Will off when Williams went off. But I am sure that everyone on this board (before hindsight) would prefer Will on the the ground over McGuane at that time.

errr it's 2008 not 1978, there's no place for a backline full of gorillas unless you wish to be belted by 15-20 goals ea week...who were the gorilla defenders in last years GF:confused:

Sarge has added to our back half by using his frame in the contest and can move pretty well to boot....Rance will have to improve plenty to be elevated from the thirds into senior company...One step at a time folks..

A bit hard to do better than BOG in any given game. Have you bothered to look at how the ressies have gone and who has been named our best in the last two games?

Good gorillas are required. Not unskilled ones like in the '70s. Roughead is a gorilla but he was No.2 in the draft. What planet are you on?

aghh, my friend but he plays forward...there arent too many good defenders around that are his size...It's a fine line , balance and reflex is more important these days than Mick Martin style bullocking which the rules prohibit in most cases ...Rance would appear to be a good go soon enough but he doesnt fit the mould of a gorilla

It appears to be more on what we define "gorilla" to be. Rance has the body that will develop into a huge strong frame. Gourdis has super strong legs. Although neither is a "gorilla" now, they are far far ahead of Thursty, McGuane and Schultz when it comes to potential physical presence. These guys will never be able to out-bustle a Brown or a Roughead but give Rance and Gourdis a couple of preseasons and they will be on their way.

I WOULD have thought Scarlett and Harley would have a fair bit of size and bulk about them from last year's grand final side.
Certainly bigger than what we have on offer.
That's not downplaying the input or ability of the likes of Thursfield, Moore and McGuane, but they are all similar builds and playing against bigger bodies.
I think it pretty significant that Roughead - a solid tall - stepped up to take some telling grabs in the last quarter and sink us with two goals, and that we were outmarked by Brian lake the week before late in the game to deny us victory.
The aforementioned trio will be fighting out of their division most weeks and that can tell late in a game!
That's not downplaying their input.

prob gets down to what you define as a gorilla, both of them 95k, same weight as sarge, but heavier than Thursty and Moore both at 86k. Something tells me this aint whats holding us back right now when you consider we only had 33 I50 on the weekend yet held the opposition to 14 goals:rolleyes:

Schulz was on him for one goal when McGuane went off with the blood rule. Schulz gave away a holding free, even though Roughead wasn't really in the contest. I think you might be right about Thursfield being on him for the last two. Thursty has been down a bit over the last couple of weeks. On the day I thought McGuane played a poor one, but watching it again on Foxtel he did ok, apart from one big stuff-up when he should have attacked the ball and instead it bounced high and over his head to set up a goal.
