Look at how bad our draft picks were in that time. No wonder we had a **** time in 2000-01, and only good pick ups since that time are starting to shine through now to give us hope.

I knew we didn't draft well in that time, but i thought we had gotten more than what we did there. I've never looked at it in such a plain list before, and that really makes it obvious just why we had that period of real crapness.

Wow, some shocking stuff, hourn.

1993-1995, the only good thing we got out of that period was Cousins, and possibly Morrison.

I actually think we 1996 was very positive- Gardiner, Wooden, Wirrpunda & Braun, and I get the impression that since then, things have picked up significantly, do you have a list of our draft picks in recent years?
My gratitude to the present brains trust is unbounding, after they correctly picked Judd over Polak, who we all would have preferred at the time.

1997 saw Jaxon Crabb taken at #12

Heatley would have been good if they'd actually given him a chance ,rather than letting him wallow with Subiaco kicking massive bags.

The jury is still out on this one. As one is a midfielder and the other a tall forward / back (spine), and these players mature at different rates.

Judd had a fine year and looks to have a very good future. Polak has really done nothing wrong this year, just he injured his shoulder this year. Ironically didn't Judd miss alot of junior football last year because of shoulder injuries?, and look what he did this year.

Just remember that alot of your supporters are now realising that your spine in the future may not be as healthy as you may have thought. Players like Glass, Lynch and McDougall may be the fix.

This is an interesting recruiting topic to look at in say another 2 years where we may have a better idea which player produced.

I'm actually real happy about the way our key players our starting to pan out. I'm still a bit skeptical on some but i'm more optomistic than what i was at the beginning of this year.

Absolutely. Polak could come out like a steam train next year, whereas Judd's focus might start to wander as the contract deadline approaches.

Hopefully McDougall continues to improve - read shane on another site use him as an example of why the #5 pick was traditionally a "dud".

Yep same here. Lynch has shown what he's made of. From what Ive seen of Mcdougal, admittedly not alot, he does SEEM to be preety special. I expect to see alot more of Glass and Gasper in 2003. A sort of changing of the guard between Milly and the two of them, Id expect and hope

hourn, suzi & I I know that you're really Ken Judge trying to justify what went wrong.

It's a bit misleading to do that - every AFL club drafts lots of players who never make it. If you posted a list from every club there would be loads of hacks in it (as it turned out). AFL is a tough life.

Also, isn't Ben Robbins still playing AFL footy with the Kangaroos, having had several seasons on the strong list that is Brisbane?

Fraser Gehrig was a more than serviceable player for us for several years (despite the largely unfair criticism from WA supporters) until he decided to go back to Victoria (I'm not defending this but), where he is one of St Kilda's best players.

Where is Drew Banfield? He joined in 1993 or 1994 and was a Premiership player in 1994 and a B&F in 1996.

You might think Downsborough is a hack, but we traded him on to Port Adelaide for someone quite decent I think (can't remember what).

I thought we picked up Brett, not Jason, Spinks in 1994. He was excellent for most of that season (like Quinten Lynch was last year) and arguably only missed a Premiership medal through injury. We later traded him to Geelong for something valuable I imagine.

There were other reasons for that "period of real crapness", such as the negativity of the coach, the unexpected retirements through injury of great players like Kemp & McKenna, injuries, poor trading for older players by Judge (apart from Collica, you can raffle them as far as I'm concerned) and the natural decline of a great playing list.

More than one way of looking at this, mate.

Oh boy... Port didnt really do that did they??
There was a lot more to that deal than that.

Besides, Port was new, and the Eagles admin (headed by Bryan Cook) were at their most powerful politically. I think the term is "we baffled 'em with bull****".

You don't get away with those deals these days.

VOR, I thought the club had both Jason and Brett Spinks on their lists at one time.

Also, did we also have Nathan McIntosh on our list at one time too?

Not sure about Jason off the top of my head, but I was just trying to point out that the list that was posted had a few errors and omissions in it. Brett was the younger of the Spinks brothers and he definitely played AFL in 1994 (I saw the first game v Essendon at the MCG that year and he played CHF). I remember Jason getting knocked out by Simon Moss in the Freo Derby WAFL GF in 1992 and he pretty much went downhill from there, so I'd be surprised if we drafted Jason as late as 1994.

Nathan was on our list I think.

You guys got given a compensation pick, in reverse order of where you were in the ladder, for Port's uncontracted player selections (in your case Downsborough). Port never actually had the picks to give. This is how Essendon got #2 in the same draft.

We also traded you not much for Bond and Lyle if I recall correctly, which was probably agreed as part of the uncontracted selection....due to your lower ladder position than the other clubs, you knew you'd get #1 if we took Downsborough.

Re: Brothers on the Eagles list

Did we ever have Jay Burton on our list with Matthew - I know the Dockers had them both in 1995.

Yes. According to the bible "Soaring" we had both players on our lists.
