Thing you have to remember is mid year rnd 12 last year we 8wins 4 losses and very much up there with top4 despite a team with newbies like Langdon and frost, multiple injuries and depleted backline, Adams very shaky finding his feet, Cloke out of form, witts and Grundy still getting used to senior footy, Marley shaky after his court case, Reid out, fasolo struggling with his feet and trying to play back, ball ageing and not at his best, swan struggling, toovey not at his fittest, etc etc.. But we were still good enough to get the points on the board. Until it all went down hill when the injuries piled up.
Next year we've got the same core team, with improvements and new talent, exceptional depth and so far a solid fitness base. Freeman will explode I'm sure of it. Watch him start stringing 30+ touch games together with swan and Pendles, will bypass beams in his debut season bookmark that. Varcoe is an upgrade on Harry. He's got more composure and accuracy and is a goalkicker which we desperately need. Maxwell was past it 3 years ago and we don't lose anything, having him gone will help the back line establish themselves as a group and settle in to way of communicating and structuring without him. Ball was past it and Adams will step in, JT in reserve, and greenwood to do some dirty work as well. Darcy Moore will make an impact, Reid will finally come back and transform our fwd line in to a dangerous effective one. Seedsman will get a full season and take off from where he left off in 13 and really start looking like a superstar. Elliot just gets better every year and will take over from bruest and Gunston as the leagues best small fwd. frost and Langdon will be so much stronger and fitter and will take their game up a notch. Then you have an injection of youth like Maynard, de goey, and I think Abbott who can come in and give us a bit more X factor, I'm excited about crisp, I think he could really be something, not to mention karnezis who could be the fwd to complete our offence and will probably feature a few bags throughout the year. Broomhead is going to add some much needed class and vision and will be another that makes us glad beams is gone because it opens some space for opportunity for guys like this to get time in the middle, keeffe is looking like a monster at the moment and I think will really settle in and become one of the toughest backs in the game next year. Witts and Grundy have some more experience behind them and will become more solid and feature more, then of course you have sidebottom who really stepped it up in the second half of last year while beams was dropping off. Don't forget the class that TA will bring to the wing/fwd flank and help fwd delivery to Reid Cloke Elliot, karnezis, swan, Darcy Moore, fasolo, and probably goldsack too.
Add in guys like job no marsh who could be a real surprise packet, toovey coming good again and just locking down opponents so effectively and you start seeing a picture of a fairly undefeatable side. Our vfl will be the best in the comp by a long way.
Not questioning your opitimism here. I didn't rate our position in the first half of the season last year. Didn't necessarily think we would fall (certainly not so low) but I just didn't think the footy we played and the wins we had were good enough to indicate much. I hoped we would show the form to play finals footy but then it went the other way. I never thought we were playing the level of footy early last year to give hopes to significant impact on the finals so figure the ladder position was an unrealistic judge of where we were really at.
