Assange originally worked with The Guardian to publish high-profile leaked documents. Yet the British newspaper later turned on him, publishing a series of questionable news reports about him that helped lay the groundwork for his arrest and imprisonment. A particularly infamous report published last year claimed that he held a series of meetings with former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and unnamed Russians inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London where Assange was trapped for years. It reported as fact that they discussed breaking him out and publishing Hillary Clinton’s stolen emails.

The story was almost immediately exposed as a hoax based on information from a known charlatan who had previously burned The Guardian, and even its author, Luke Harding, with false information before. Yet it took The Guardian almost a year to review the article and admit that it was misleading, by which time the damage had been done and Assange was intimately linked with Russia in the public imagination.

He wasn't trapped, he was there evading the law. Let Equador look after him.

Reporters Without Borders is "alarmed" by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's health and demanded his immediate release.

The international nonprofit organization, previously known as Reporters Sans Frontieres, also said the United States "should cease" its plans to charge Assange under the Espionage Act in a statement published Friday.
"We are alarmed by the current state of Julian Assange’s health, and call for his immediate release on humanitarian grounds," said RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire. "Assange is being targeted by the US for his journalistic-like activities, which sets a dangerous precedent for press freedom. The US should cease its persecution of Assange and drop the charges under the Espionage Act without further delay.”

nytimes and washington post have been covering, not much from the shaky media.

Julian Assange faces the prospect of being denied press protections under US law if he goes to trial there, WikiLeaks says, citing evidence submitted for his London extradition case.
