HYPOCRITES!!!o_O
There was people lining up to stone the new Tiger for getting drunk at the races, but it appears there are deeper problems here and most are willing to simply brush it aide and say, "it happens".
One standard for one and one for another????
I said it at the time of the Connors incident, this kid needs to pull his head in (I like many have heard some awful stories about Dusty).
I maintain the same .. pull your head in.
His 2012 season was nothing spectacular!!
^^^^ agree with this 100 % .
Also think that this story comes on the back of Edwards being caught and the interest in what effect he could have of Dustin . Maybe just coincidence but I think not .

Its a worry to say the least. Hopefully Dimma with Choco's help will slowly iron things out. I am only worried about the kid getting into serious trouble like others have in the past, in the form of mug punters wanting to tee off on footy stars. FWIW, the plus and only plus is that I think that its purely off season stuff and he will get his act together when they are back on the job. But its a worry..

And I am not surprised that you can't understand why people have concerns over players off field behavior.
Did you actually read my OP and where did I state it wasnt a concern.. The jist is that yeah hes a rough diamond and yeah hes had a tough upbringing but hey lets not neg out and talk about trading him, lets back the RFC to harness him and get ourselves the gun player he can be..

Dimma was on SEN and certainly didnt back away from anything protrayed in the article, didnt make a big deal of it but just said there were some issues the club had to work through with Dusty, that he was a good kid that just needed to keep himself busy during the off season especially.

I think whoever made the comparison with buddy was a good one, some players just need a bit of special attention to keep them focused in the right direction. The payoff is huge with this kid if we get it right. I imagine if most of us think back to when we were 20 its not always easy to make the right decisions all of the time especially when you have ample time and money to indulge yourself.

Dusty is an animal on and off the field - look at the kid, he has neck tatts for crying out loud! He's a 21 year old from a working class background who dropped out of school at 15. Not suprising that he enjoys getting on it every now and then. But Most importantly he is a Gun Footballer. He wont be sacked at the end of the year if he continues to play up, he'll have a contract befitting his attitude as opposed to something more like Lids'. The ball is in his court...

I read somewhere that during the season, he is generally quite good. He just seems to be a guy that needs structure in his life. Starting training with the 1-3 year players will be good for him. Hopefully get him fit and focused for a big 2013.

If things don't work out, I think we will be ok (we won't have a huge slide down the ladder or anything like that - heck we improved this year with Dusty having a quieter season which just shows 1 player doesn't make the team). The thing is Dusty is a huge player for us. He is one of a very select breed that can literally blow a game apart. I think if we want to have the ultimate success in the coming years, we will need Martin to be one of our main men.

I'm optimistic that Choco, Dimma, Cotch, the leadership group and club will do everything in their power to make it work out not just for our benefit but for Dustin's.

Yes I did , I also read the below two posts where you labelled people clowns , spoons and claimed others neg out and jump off players in a heart beat because hes not a tea totalling 'solid citizen.

My ******* god some of you guys are clowns.. This kid didnt grow up in Brighton and attend Carey Grammar and have a charmed life leading into footy. He quit school to play footy and by all accounts did it tough in his childhood..
Lets not all neg out on the kid and lets have faith that the RFC can harness him (which they are trying to do) so he can tear the league a new arseh*le.
**** it shits me how quickly some of you spoons jump off players in a heart beat because hes not a tea totalling 'solid citizen'

No surprises the response came from you.. The defence rests..
That is the reason you got the responses you got , not the OP .

I don't care what he does as long as he's not doing drugs and not missing any training sessions then I see no problem. No laws broken lately? not hurting anyone's feeling is he? lol he will be fine.

I have a few mates who have seen him when he's out.

This is what he does.

i) Dustin Martin goes out partying (he loves a drink, who doesn't?)
ii) Dustin Martin loves chicks. He grinds with them at clubs, most likely had his new place tailor made Barney Stinson style, I'm sure he has lots of 'fun' with some nice girls if you know what I mean. ;)
iii) I have heard that DM has smoked out before, but I cannot confirm.
iv) Those that say he's a 'dick' are males who he gives no attention too because he's focused on girls.
v) He hangs out with the 'wrong' crowd, (people who are dicks too).

The thing with Dustin Martin is that he's a good looker and gets a lot of attention. Don't get me wrong, Dustin loves the football that he plays, but when the time comes for some socialising, he goes out and just thinks of himself.

The RFC need to find him three things,

1. Dog (A dog will give him a responsibility, something outside footy that he can take care of now that he lives on his own).
2. A girlfriend (RFC can't do this unfortunately, but as we all know once you're tied down into a relationship, going out with the mates becomes a distant memory and slowly slowly you're always out with the misses eating at restaurants and hanging out with other couples.
3. Another job, send him to work at Kmart once a week for 5 hours. See how good he has it, it's not fun picking up after people's shit at a retailer for 60 bucks.

Let's hope this all happens, because we need to set him straight. If we lose him to another club, I guarentee you he will shape up and make every Richmond supporter regret the day we lost him for Picks 4, 8 and some dud like Dean Polo. When you got gold you need to shine it up and take care of it, you can't trade it for a 'mystery' prize that could be of value.

He is an afl footballer not a bricklayer , it may come as a surprise to you and others , but the standard of off field ( out of work hours) behaviour expected is completely different .
Unlike some professions getting blotto has a significant effect on their ability to perform anywhere near the best of their ability .
His past , has little to do with the expectation of him within his choosen profession .
If he doesn't want or can't perform to the level expected of an AFL footballer , he won't be an AFL footballer for long .

The standards you've outlined here and the expectations you've placed are precisely what the coach, CEO and club would be expecting not only from Dusty but the entire playing group. What other road is there to a winning, disciplined cluture?

Sure we all love Dusty (my favourite player), and we've seen glimpses of the brilliance he's capable of, but (for his sake and the club) that doesnt mean we give him enough rope to hang himself with.

I was just stumped at the other poster's "defence rests" comment. Good grief.

This from you …

Bringing the club in to disrepute is the only one that matters to me

But here’s a selection for ya (no names)….

I would sack him. Not for being drunk but for being a tool. Get Rid of Him. He was just a short cut for some mild short term success

The guy is clearly a luv sick puppy bemoaning his severed ties with norf Dont know why we bothered

Gives the impression he couldn't care less if he was picked up or not.
Better now than the Friday before a game though.

Disbelief. Congratulations Aaron, you're about to feel the wrath of the Tiger faithful. You ******* idiot.

Piss him off. Better players available as delisted FA's anyway. Could be a blessing in disguise IMO.

Clearly we are only targeting individuals of the highest character...

Seriously, I don't care if it's somewhat innoccuos - piss him off for being thick!

Seriously, I know we all get drunk... but man what a friggin d*ckhead. 3 days after joining a new club!

Less than two days after having his livelihood saved. I think the pysc testing machine needs re calibrating.

Right next to the still swinging, rotting carcass of Connors. Like Dan he has long rap sheet of previous form, just because it wasn't at Richmond is irrllevant, in fact if anything it's worse that he's bought it with him to a new -third- club within 72 hours of arriving.

Well he's obviously very thankful for the 2nd chance we gave him isn't he? If he can't pull it together days after arriving at a new club then what hope has he got?

We don't want bad eggs.

Richmond young gun Dustin Martin needs a hobby, coach Damien Hardwick says

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick said a summer priority was to find an off-field interest for young midfielder Dustin Martin.

Hardwick said today Martin, like all young players, needed the outside focus to avoid getting into trouble.

"Obviously, Dusty is an important player for us, there's no doubt about that. And one that we look forward to having a long and distinguished career with us,'' Hardwick said.

[Edit- PMSL @ those who want him sacked or moved on]

I agree.. Floated this on the draft thread and got howled down, which I can understand. But this article, regardless of accuracy, is worrying. It's all about the "brand" these days and how people perceive the club.
The bloke is impressionable and clearly easily led, now that he is out of March's house there isn't that supervision. This season will be very interesting.

..and club culture.

And as Dimma said on SEN, kids his age needs structure in their life otherwise they stray.

All of which makes the decision to bring a serial dickhead like Edwards into the club all the more baffling.

I wrote on this board when the Edwards trade was mooted that 'you might not want Edwards hanging around with young players like Martin'. The thing is, though, that apart from what happened at West Coast, all of Edwards' 'indiscretions' have been centred on alcohol.

We have already seen at least one indiscretion by Martin involving other substances and if even half of the rumours are to be believed, it goes beyond the mere ol' 'sleeping pills with alcohol' routine.

I really hope the RFC can get it through to Martin that he has his 30s and beyond to get into that kind of thing but for now, he has to sacrifice that for the good of himself and the RFC. I for one would much rather see Richmond successful than Carlton, Essendon or Collingwood and a fit and firing (and disciplined) Martin is vitally important to that happening.

Ok, now are these same posters suggesting we go easy on Dusty? I certainly aint. As I said in the Edwards thread, Dusty got what he deserved last time around - a two week suspension.

There is a difference between different people having differing opinions to you, and being hypocrites. There may be the odd hypocrite amongst us, but it's probably the exception rather than the rule :)

Actually, I'm a bit confused about your stance. You seemed to jump to the defense of Edwards, but are telling Dusty to pull his head in. The reason people jumped all over Edwards is because of his history. He has been down the same road Dusty has been down, some would wonder if he's still on it.

I'm sure dusty is just trying to enjoy his success probably never thought he would have money to burn like he has and he's enjoying it, no harm in that. Looking forward to a huge year from him I'm sure he expects the same from himself aswell.

I was one who wanted action on Edwards and If Dustin doesnt improve his attitude I would have no problem seeing him go to GWS next year for the first pick in the national draft and dominc tyson. Tom Boyd and Dominic Tyson for Martin would be a fair swap.

No. Martin is a tiger through thick and thin.
So he has a few off-field issues?
I'm sure the rest of the players in the AFL are as clean as a new born baby's ass
A smoking girlfriend would fix his problems.
