Will Essendon win the Flag ?

Two well known football personalities in the media today had different opinions of the fortunes of Essendon.

One (Daniel Harford) predicted them to be 8-3 at the halfway point but fall to 12-10 by the end of the season and missing the finals (as he declared you would need 13 wins to make the finals).

And one (Tim Gossage) despite agreeing with a colleague that Essendon may turn in a 9-2 record at the halfway point said they would still miss the finals.

We cannot win anything without making the finals first.

Oh dear, these threads are way to premature, just shows how much hype can get to people, we have improved significantly but we arent flag cotenders just year, give us another year or two.

No. Just no.
Have had a soft as butter draw so far. Early injuries to Carlton decimated team structure and virtually removed midfield rotations. Essendon seized their chance. The week after they played an undermanned Collingwood and fell short.

Gold.

Because Dempsey/Hooker/Hurley/Hille/Hibberd/Pears/Hocking are not important to Essendon.

No they won't.

But by all means Essendon please prove me wrong ;)

Edit: knowing us we will beat the Eagles and then Lose to Richmond the next week. Then struggle against but beat the Giants.

Ignore Abaddon.

"Unlisted" loathes Essendon and whilst this thread is more than a little ridiculous (as we are clearly not going to win the flag), Abaddon struggles with the concept of us winning one home & away game let alone anything significant.

Will (and have) start well early and could hit 9-2 at one point.

A number of issues.

1-To win a flag, we need to come into a year where it isnt hard to beat the likes of Port, North, Richmond, Melbourne and against teams other than sydney and west coast away. We are there yet.

2-Small forwards worry us. Betts, Garlett, Nahas, King, Blair, Le Cras etc always score heavy on us. Need to stop that

3-Negating class. Too easily blown away by Swan on Anzac Day. Similar issues to be had with Ablett, Priddis, Cotchin etc

4-Hurley. Needs to start making a mark. Has been very good. Waiting for him to be great. Runs under the ball a lot. Creates a decent target but needs to position better when running on a lead. I genuinely think he is the one we are waiting on. Its no longer potential cos we have seen what he can do. We need it every week and to take another step up (a la Tom Hawkins).

Still 2 years off i believe.
Need a finals run this year. Top 4 next. And that would be about right.

I think people are underestimating the bomber Thompson factor, I watched him on 360 tonight, he knows what he is doing, he did this with Geelong, he knows how to turn solid players into all-Australians, and strategy-wise look at the wins against Geelong and Carlton for tactical nous that no offense to hird I believe came from bomber

Correct.

Look at :Hardingham/Hibberd/Lonergan/Hocking/Howlett/Crameri/Bellchambers. All late picks. All thriving. Common theme?

if they rolled us on anzac day, and pretty convincingly, I would have said they could win the flag, saying will is just stupid. Its a could for a lot of teams this year. But I think maybe 1 or 2 years off just in maturity then they'll be sweet. Injuries as well, could have a full team come finals time, but you want that group to be together for a while before you play finals, not coming back in here and there. But who knows this year, I think its just OP trying to take heat of west coast imo :p

Using Anzac day as a measuring stick is ridiculous considering the circumstances, pies coming off a soft win against port and the bombers a tough match against the blueS combined with the short. Real made it very difficult, not to mention the early injury on the day and even then they only just won.

I thought essendon were off on ANZAC day yet still almost won.

Deflecting ? we're the only undefeated side in the comp buddy. I'm reasonably happy with our form. As Ross lyon would say injuries and media speculation are things you can't control so it's not best to waste much time on them and I'm not going to apologise for that.

Essendon did not fire a shot on Anzac Day. Were well off. The one point loss was amazing given how poor our better players were and how good Swan et al were.

That game would have been a 7 goal loss in years past.

Fair bit of resolve in the EFC group now. The best bit about that game was Ryder/Hocking/Stanton/Watson were shocking but all lifted and nearly timed our run to perfection.

I was actually using anzac day because its a blockbuster game with 90k ppl there, IE finals type not because it was collingwood

Tim Gossage is a goose
He must hang out with Hutchy when he's in Victoria, because the balding ugly man just said Essendon can win the flag.

Don't get me wrong, they've improved, but they can not win the flag this year, because it's likely they will have to win at least one interstate final, and their record interstate recently is terrible really.

The draw this season means that 1-2 sides who should not be in the top 4 will be, and that obviously means 1-2 sides who should be won't be (Pies or Cats may miss due to really tough draws).

For me, this year may be the first time in a long time a team from outside the top 4 wins the flag, would you really want to be playing Collingwood or Geelong in September?

Hutch is a clown. Last year he tipped the Dees to make the top 4 and GC the 8. He also nominated the following to kick over 40 for the Dees last year: Wona/Jurrah/Watts/Green/Petterd.

Any side in history have that many over 40? How those blokes all tracking now?

Close the thread and reopen it in 12 months time when it will be valid.

We won't even finish top 4 this year, so no hope for the flag if we cannot even do that.

Woah, why so negative? the Bombers are going great at the moment and CAN make the top 4 this season. You guys are 5-1 right now, your next 6 games:

v West Coast (W)
v Richmond (W)
v GWS (W)
v Melbourne (W)
v Sydney (W)
v Fremantle (W)

Now those 6 games are winnable, the Freo, Sydney and West Coast games are 50/50 to be being honest but let's say you guys win those 6 games, it'll take you to 11-1, sitting on top probably or 2nd, great chance of finishing in the top 4.
