Will Essendon win the Flag ?

I don't think many people seriously thought the Bombers were a genuine top 4 chance despite their strong start to the season? Or did people genuinely believe they were?

IMO, they are definitely a top 8 side but IMO top 4 is out of their depth at the moment.

Sure, they have convincingly had some terrific wins against some of the premier sides and they have done incredibly well with what they've got and lets be honest here, they aren't the most talented list in the competition or even in the top echelon of talent either but Jimmy Hird has them functioning at a competitive level weekly which is a real credit to the entire group. They get a relatively even spread of contribution from everyone which keeps them in most games without that genuine star power.

The problem with that is though, that eventually, that "peak" so to speak will waver and at times fall away.

This is when the "stars" would pick up the slack and carry you over the line but at Essendon Jobe Watson is the only genuine superstar they have which makes it incredibly difficult. Need to find a couple more genuine superstars. Have a couple of super young players developing really well i.e. Zaharakis, Hurley and Ryder but they need them to reach that next level quicker to support their champion captain.
Top eight was what I was hoping for. Still building just like Richmond. Next couple of years is when both teams will hit their straps.

Like you are one to talk about losing to Freo.

yep
we played them when they had a full team and we had 6 outs.

Just wait till you guys get done as well different story now isn't it...haha Hirdy and Bomber look like geniuses don't they now :D

Shows how much you know about other teams in the comp. You mob however is in for some pain in the next few years.

Should/when they beat an undefeated west coast at docklands on the weekend, the spotlight will be on them and rightly so.
They are the form Victorian side playing great football with clearly good depth.

I have to admit I didn't see them coming on so fast but players like crameri, Hurley, Stanton, bellchambers, heppel are turning into genuine superstars they are on track to finish top four and if they do watch out.

Surely they have to be considered legitimate flag threats??
they were never going to win the flag...

.

Can you list the premier sides they have had terrific wins against? WCE in Melbourne is the only team in the top 8 they have beaten. 18th, 17th, 15th, 14th, 12th, 10th and 9th are their other wins.

well, we haven't exactly had the hardest draw.

i think the collingwood and sydney games showed that we are roundabout the same level as those sides.
To be honest Collingwood hadn't hit their straps at that stage and you were flying. Sydney isn't that good in Melbourne. We gave them a flogging and many Essendon fans don't rate us at all.

Essendon was not flying at all. Had a pretty ordinary start to the year with three ugly wins, also most of Essendon's main movers had a down day against Collingwood while Pendlebury and Swan stared.

While it is a little simplistic it is pretty close to the truth to say Essendon dropped its last two games purely from bad kicking for goal, not helped by rushed delivery into the forward line.

Funny that. We had 20 odd more inside fifties against GWS and a heap more scoring shots and people said we were lucky to win the game. Against Freo, we also had more inside fifties and scoring shots and most Essendon posters said it was a howler of a performance. But when Essendon do the same thing, games were dropped purely from bad kicking. Can't you see the double standards?

Did you also break the record for the most inside 50's and a loss. Sydney at Etihad and MCG are very different prospects by the way.

And let me just add that nearly no Essendon supporters on this site even thought we would win the flag this year and our main objective is for one final win. It was purely the media pumping us up and in reality if anything Essendon supporters have been playing us down.

I'm not "people" I haven't said that at all. I haven't posted anything about either game. However, I have chatted to a number of mates in real life and have said to all of them that Richmond v GWS and North v Gold Coast are all almost exactly the same as the Essendon v Demons game. A superior side kicking themselves out of it.

Umm what? Essendon played terribly against Melbourne. Richmond were very ordinary against GWS and Fremantle. Can you please provide quotes to prove this double standards theory of yours?

You're right sir, I should from now on believe you seeing as you are the prophet

You were a little lucky to "win" the game. The reason you needed to be lucky was bad goal kicking. 20 behinds or something? Should have won by 50 points.

The inside 50 argument and missed shots is only applicable when taken into account Essendon's performances, if we take into account other clubs it's not relevant.

Ess's prime movers had a down day, or are they just no good against quality opposition? I favour the latter. Stanton is the prime example - chops up average opposition when allowed to run free. But no impact against a quality opponent when someone goes to him in a defensive role

Coll's forward line was non existent on Anzac day, while tarrant Reid Thomas shaw were all missing. For ess to lose that game shows how far behind the pies they really are

This kind of rubbish has been trotted out on bigfooty after every decent win we have had in the last few years. Seems it now applies to the losses as well.

Definitely have the big men for the job, Crameri and Hurley are high quality KPF's. Hurley has to be a permanent forward, with Hooker/Hibberd/Carlisle and co their defence is well-stocked without him.

A lot will depend on Monfries/Jetta/Davey turning up in the finals, not a dig at them personally just that small forwards output in finals is generally quite low. I still think they may be one class outside mid short though, with Watson/Hocking/Stanton they certainly have the ball-winning ability.
