Great start to the season where they beat up on bottom ranked sides, but the reality is setting in. They aren't very good and have too many talls and not enough midfielders.

Agree with this, great start to the season and should improve over the coming years as long us they can find the right balance of training loads and get more out of their younger ball carriers like Melksham, Howlett etc

Actually even when James Hird was asked that on EMT last week you could see he doesnt think so either. You would expect instinctively he would say 'yes of course' quickly he had to think about it for a few seconds and give an unconvincing lie.

Considering plenty of the 'experts' said we wouldn't make the top 8 we're not going all that bad. Said at the start of the year we'd finish 7th or 8th and it's looking like thats what it will be. But 2014-15 looks to be our premiership window. I've got a feeling we don't have the team for a Geelong type dynasty or even a something like Collingwood have had since 2008 or 09.

We were only going into this season hoping for a finals win as the next step (complete opposite of Bigfooty's prediction that we'd finish 13th) - a top four surge was a prospect before all the injuries and the 2 extra losses in the last few weeks that came with it, but the majority, if not everyone, in the Essendon camp would not have seen ourselves as winning the flag this year.

There are so many teams fighting for those spots this year it isn't funny.

What we can take out from this year compared to the last is that we haven't lost more than 2 games in a row, whereas I think 5-6 was the drop off contributor last year. And there's a bright future ahead.

Also, to only lose 5 games by Round 17 is something the general football public didn't really expect from the Bombers. I can't even believe that our depth took us this far to begin with, but depth can only take you so far before it eventually catches up to you.

Interesting to note that so far, 3 of the predicted finals contenders have lost by 8-11 goals to other finals contenders this round.
