Also, to only lose 5 games by Round 17 is something the general football public didn't really expect from the Bombers. I can't even believe that our depth took us this far to begin with, but depth can only take you so far before it eventually catches up to you.

Interesting to note that so far, 3 of the predicted finals contenders have lost by 8-11 goals to other finals contenders this round.
Maybe the ladder fooled us. It isn't as close a year as we thought.

We've just got a lot making up the numbers, because it is such a weak year.

without going into the quality of players which is important (because you can have adequate numbers in a key areas but not the neccesary quality)but just causes bun fights i tend to look at things like games played and age and the make up of the list ie structure and numbers in key areas ie kpds kpfs genuine mids. to give a decent idea where a side should be at.

useing the current list and we took it from the start of this yr 24/3/12 essendon would have

9 100 plus gamers. a reasonable number but not enoughto challenge for a gf .

11 50 - 99 gamers. not enough need a few more getting enough into these brackets is where depth comes into it. not enough to win a gf and maybe a bit light on to make finals even. lose too many thru injury out of these groups and you will struggle to win with those numbers.

age wise they had 25 players in key age groups aged 23 - 27 mature and 28yo plus veterans. more than enough to suggest they should be at the very least be challenging for the 8 this yr.

they had 21 players in development age group 22 and under obviously some of these are best 22 or getting regular games.

going by these stats and ive done this very quickly id say at the start of the yr age wise they should be a finals side but experience wise they are a bit shy and borderline finals.

at the end of this yr a lot of this can change for the better or worse. ie hille fletcher lovett-murray and mcveigh are all in their 30s and could retire leaving them a little light on for 100 plus gamers.

people should take a look at most premiership sides to give them an idea of where your list needs to be in these areas.

Just found this thread, I lolled hard.

Realistically we are probably 2 years away from seriously challenging.
With guys like hille, spike, NLM and the dustbin on the way out, they need to be replaced and others need to step up.
Given another season or 2, guys like heppell, melksham, Howlett, Myers, hurley, pears, Jetta and co will be getting into that 80-120 game bracket, and start to reach their full potential.
Add to that the more experienced hocking, Watson, winderlinch, Stanton, hooker and you have something that looks much more like a premiership list than the one we have now. We are coming, we're just not quite there yet....

Essendon all but done!

Richmond and North have gone past them, better players in the midfield and down back and Essendon will be nothing more than another Fremantle for the next 10 years.

The weapon and Bomber Thompson will be glad they departed Geelong :D
