Ricky Mott? He was delisted by the Swans yesterday, and he seems the obvious pickup for a side looking for a solid tap ruckman.

Swans dump ruckman Mott

By GEOFF POULTER

SYDNEY has axed young ruckman Ricky Mott after just one season.

The West Australian big man is now likely to be a recruiting target of other clubs, including Essendon.

The Bombers are desperate to boost their rucking resources with the departure of Steve Alessio and Paul Salmon.

Mott is believed to have returned to Perth after yesterday's delisting and will nominate for the national draft.

The 199cm Mott, 21, was picked up at No. 74 from South Fremantle in last year's draft.

He played 17 of the Swans' 22 games this year and proved handy with his bulk, size and enthusiasm.

"The club has decided to let him go," Swans media manager Steve Brassel said last night.

"We have three other ruckmen (Jason Ball, Stephen Doyle and Adam Goodes) on the list."

Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said last night the Bombers would look at Mott. "We will be looking at three or four ruckmen in the draft," he said.

Definitely! Think the swans are crazy getting rid of Mott.

He was my fantasy footy ruckman (when Beau McDonald went down injured) and was up there in tap outs in the first half of the season. From memory vs Port and Primus he held his own pretty well.

Mott can come be Simmonds' back up at Freo if he likes.

geez, given Ball's age, they're insane.. Mott is a very good young prospect. Even if they're not interested in keeping him long term, he could have made some ok trade bait, given how much ruckmen are in demand.

I also rate Mott, he may very well be the real deal soon. If the dons have any brains at all, they'll pick him up.

Yes please.

As disappointing as it must have been for you to miss that kick Ricky at Stade de Oz, remember all of the nice things Sheedy said about you after the game?

Well it was alll part of Sheedys plan to get you in the red&black for 2003.

Welcome aboard.

:D

Gotta wonder if there is more than meets the eye. Seems a bit strange. I would have though if the Swans were considerring delisting him they woudl have offerred him as part of the Davis deal. Collingwood would have considered a ruckman I would have thought. I don't think he's any world beater but he'd worth a pre season draft pick for a club needing a ruckman surely.

What a ****ing joke this is. This club has yet again stuffed up. Any chances we had of the top 8 are gone. No doubt about it. We're ****ed.

Surely you cannot be hinging your finals chances on Ricky Mott

not Mott going, the fact we have only three ruckman left.

Ball - Didn't start out as a ruckman, is over 30 and missed all of 2002 with injuries.

Doyle - Young, our best ruckman however has been injuried a bit

Goodes - Can play the position but at 192cm, is not up to being a full time ruckman.

Add to the fact over the last 3 seasons we have had a bad run with injuries with our rucks and in 2002 we had at one stage 3 of our 4 ruckman out injuried, show the fact this decision is a poor one and will cost us.

I am literally stunned and amazed.....why the hell would the delist Mott? What more could he have done that they were expecting from him when they drafted him?

Maybe he called Roos a poohead or something....but Mott & Doyle could've been one of the very worrisome ruck duos in the future.

Exactly, he would have got something in a trade deal. Even a third round pick is better than nothing.

It smells like a homesickness thing to me. The swans may be sticking to the plan that if you want to go home, you can take your chances in the draft.

Although Mott was handy this year, he's not the sort of player you'd win a flag with, so it might just be Roo's complete restructure of the team in motion.

I think something has gone on behind closed doors that the club don't want let out to protect Mott. I feel that he has been sacked by the club and the club is covering up the reason. Might have a Carey type insident on our hands

Thats taking negative thinking to an extreme.

It could be that both Doyle and Ball are 100% fit and fully recovered from the injuries that have hampered them with both expecting a productive year ahead. ?

It's not home sickness because he's from Perth and is going to nominate in the draft.

Still Grayham I wouldn't be going into a season with 3 ruckman, no matter how fit Ball and Doyle are after all both have histories of injuries and they do strike at any time - better be safe then sorry

Assuming both are fit. Big assumption I know.
Going in with one key ruckman (Doyle) who I think will turn out to be a great player. One rotation ruckman/makeshift KPP in Ball, and one KPP come part time Ruckman in Goodes is about as good as most teams at the moment.
I guess all you'd need behind that is one very young apprentice ruckman as insurance. Mott was that, but maybe they have someone in mind with more potential, more mobile.

That doesnt prove anything. Des Headland would have nominated for the draft if he was delisted as well.

The reason I say homesickness is, that he would seem a reasonable component in the Nick Davis trade, but maybe he said he only wanted to go to perth.

Of course we have to get someone else in but why we have to in the first place is what I would like to know. Mott had a good year and was worth keeping. If we were going to get rid of him why didn't we trade or delist him at the first cut???? I think somethings happened, what exactly I don't know
