Our own Jordan Roughead? I've always thought he would find his feet in the ruck.

I've thought Griff's ruck work - esp round the ground - is not that far behind Hampson. Griff has played well in both games and I reckon selectors will have him in the team Rd 1. Selectors will see how Ivan pulls up after surgery but with 3 injury prone ruckmen - I'm starting to feel it would be too big a gamble not to promote Orren.

They have 2 spots open dont they? Promote miles now then leave one open until Ivan comes back.

The key with being able to play all three of Jack, Vickery and a 2nd ruck in the forwardline is their defensive pressure. Jack has proven he can lock the ball into the F50 with strong tackling and chasing. Vickery - I'm not sure, Griffiths does have the speed and strength. I think that Griffiths/Hampson would play high in the F50 and push up the wings to act as a link player, leaving Jack roaming the half forward line and Vickery claiming the area closer to goal. They may all rotate at times and switch around depending on matchups but that sort of structure would leave the most room in the F50 and link play up nicely.

Would it be unpopular to say that the Griffiths/Hampson ruck duo may work better than the Hampson/Maric team.........????

If Maric is out 8 - 10 weeks then we have 3 spots as big O can come onto the list as a LTI replacement.

Can't do that, for nominated rookies (those taking the place of veterans outside the list) they need to be elevated before the start of the season

exactly he was the main reason jolly was squealing like a pig and crying like a baby when no one wanted him at the pies anymore

I wouldn't want to go too early with promoting big O.

Can cover Maric with Hampson, Vickery and Griff at this stage so no point promoting O and not playing him.

Keep our options open.

He'll cover for Hampson in the ruck now with Maric out for the first half of the year. Rotate him through the forwardline with Vickery and Have Jack roaming up the wings like he did to great affect late last year.

Nobody knows this as fact, Griff has played 19 out of a possible 88 and Hampson in his first 88 played only 16 more, neither player has managed a full season with Griffs best 9 and Hampsons best 15. Tiges would be punting on Hampsons athletic ability and quality tap work to get a full season or two in (same as Griff) so he can show his full potential (Much the same as Maric before injury cursed him)

At this stage Hampson is better mainly because he has the extra years on the board, but it will be interesting to see where they finish in the pecking order come September.

Hence why I put IMO after what I said. What I should have clarified earlier on is that I think Griff will bring more to the table this year than Hampson. To be fair though, if Hampson is a stronger contributor this year than Griff then it will, in all likelihood, be better overall for the team's prospects. In an ideal world both will contribute strongly, so here's hoping!

I had similar thoughts and think based purely on potential it could, but right now Maric is just a better pure ruck than the other 2.

Needs confidence in his body and ability, with a serious kick, also takes some nice grabs. I would now prefer Jack on the fwd 50 with Griffs around the arc. Keep on him Choc

Was really impressed with Griffiths tap work as many have already opined but he's got that unfortunate marking disease where he just seems to charge at the ball with his arms already raised expecting it to fall into his mitts. The best marking forwards grab at the ball and snatch it down. He leaves himself much too open to having his arms/hands being chopped and nudged out of ideal position. Good defenders will make sure he never takes a grab.

I don't think that applies now. We can upgrade 2 rookies(before the season) purely because we only have 38 senior list players with 40 being the max a club can have.

For teams to jump from possible finalists to possible premiers, they need players like Ben to explode and become very good AFL players. Ben has all the physical tools & don't forget that it takes a while to regain confidence after serious shoulder surgery.
Expecting a good season, especially with the added responsibility with Ivan not available.

Nothing has changed there from what I've seen, the rules regarding TPP discounts for veterans has changed, but list sizes haven't.
You can have a veteran who is either inside or outside of the main list. For every veteran outside the list, you reduce your number of rookies by the same amount. If you have no veterans outside the list then you can nominate 2 rookies to be elevated to the list prior to the start of the season.

With Ivan out, we still have 3 ruckmen, Hampson, Griff & Vickery.

True, the latter two aren't really upto first ruck duties, so having just those 2 could be awkward, but Ivan is only out 3-5 rounds, so it's a reasonable risk not promoting Orren.

That said, if Griff does well, it's not out of the question that Maric/Griff could end up being a better combination.

Probably against the trend here but I think Griffiths is just a depth player. I haven't watched last weeks game yet so I stand corrected but didn't he ruck against a 19 year old 7 game player in Brodie Grundy? Lets see how he goes against reasonable opposition before considering him as a ruck option in the senior team.

Yeah, it was only a pre-season game (eg training run), but **** me, are they seriously planning to have a 19 year old, 7 game player as the number 1 ruckman all season? It's not worth making a call on whether he is worth keeping until he has played 50 games, let alone giving him 1st ruck responsibilities for an entire season.

I really don't rate Lynch on anything but long kicking and mustache growing, and White is too short to be a decent ruckman.

If Griff didn't ruck well against the Pies, he wouldn't ruck well against anyone.

I'm looking forward to having a look at him ruck against Ryder and Bellchambers. We'll learn something there.

At this stage Ivan is due to be back relatively soon - Rd 5 - So no need for Orren but if something goes wrong with Maric's recovery and/or Hampson (or Griff) get injured in that time - which is reasonably likely, we're left with say Ty and Griff/Hampson as our ruckmen. and that's getting a bit thin in my book.

I reckon he goes alright when he's in so I'd promote Orren.

And Miles would be the other.

Thomas is a good player too and I'd have him my Rd 1 team but, We've got plenty of midfield depth he'll have to wait till Rd 12 promotion. Unless there's another LTI when he'll come in earlier.

Needs to improve his marking to at least an average standard. IMO he's below average for a guy his size and if he improves he will be a very good player.

Its all in his head. He used to be above average above his head but all his shoulder recos have hampered his marking ability. Just give him time
