Will Hayward
Spritely Sydney Swans forward Will Hayward enjoyed a rocketing start to his career as he became the 11th-youngest player in the AFL era to reach 50 career goals in 2018. The 2016 draftee’s nippy pace and cunning goal awareness have made him a dangerous option in coach John Longmire’s forward line. A broken jaw and a persistent hip injury limited Hayward to just 12 goals in 13 senior games in 2019, but the South Australian is attacking the 2020 campaign on the back of his first full pre-season. Don’t be surprised if the exciting Swan finds himself on a wing this year.

Will Hayward
DOB: 26 October 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #21, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Walkerville (SA)/North Adelaide (SANFL)

Hayward often does that defensive forward job. I know he is mid sized but he could play more as a marking target imo like we are currently asking our our tall defender to do.

Time for a spell in the reserves.
It was good for Teddy Richards.
Good for Harry Cunningham.
Good for Wicks.
But not for Will?

Sorry Swans coaches but I don't wish to support that type of club that has double standards with different players.

Last year Hayward had a good season. I can't see them overreacting to one game and dropping multiple players to the reserves.

Especially when the ressies don't play for 2 weeks.

Get in line Tedeski lol. Ollie first.

Credit to him last year as his set shots were better , but has to work harder to get the ball for a start
Half forward is the hardest place to get the ball.
Most players are not good in this regard.
Getting the ball is only one key statistic to succeed at half forward.
You need a unique player to play this position.

Has to have a tank. You have to run up and down the ground all day.
Not only that you need to be ahead of the ball to get those outlet marks.
You need to be behind the ball to snuff out the opposition incursions. Tank is required.
Still have to compose yourself to kick a goal.

Name 9 players better at half forward than Haywood. I'll bet most can't.

I chose 9 because that is half the competition.

So many put him down. Not many offer an alternative.

BTW the only player I would swap him for is the annoying goalsneak at Melbourne. Different player but he kicks an annoying anount of goals against us.

Your request of nine 'half forwards' is difficult, as that's a pretty vague term. Smalls play at half forward, talls play at half forward, mediums play at half forward, even midfielders play at half forward.

But in terms of those expected to contribute both up the ground and inside 50, I'd at least have these guys ahead of Hayward: Rankine, Greene, Heeney, Warner, Fritsch, Stringer, Mihocek, Bolton, Rayner, Keays, Papley and Moore.

I don't know if I'm turning into Ray Charles or what, but it seems glaringly obvious to me that Hayward's body shape and size will always limit him from impacting games. He has no core strength, no meat on his arms or legs. He just gets flung around like a lacky band. It so often mitigates the endeavour that I genuinely do think he plays with. But every time I comment on his lack of size, I am met with crickets. Which makes me think I am the only person who is seeing this issue.

For a player that gets flung around like a lanky band, he sticks his fair share of tackles against the players you mentioned above. Bearing in mind Heeney and Warner play more mid time than Wayward.

Also his goals stack up against your nominated players too. He is around abouts.

I just don 't get the Hayward hate.

I know goals and tackles don't tell the whole story. There are 1 percenters and other stats.

You asked me to name nine players better at half forward than Hayward. I think those I named are all better than Hayward, be it at tackling, using the ball, creating goals, general pressure, marks etc.

I also don't "hate" Hayward. I specifically mentioned his endeavour which I really believe is among the best in our team. I just think the combination of his role, his body shape/size, and his average-to-decent footballing ability all combines to make a player who is regularly near the bottom third of contributors in our team. Someone of that status I think is going to persistently be the subject of debate as to whether he should be in the team or not, in my opinion.

I give up.

You bag out Hayward all the time. Step up or give it a rest.

Both Hayward and Florent need to lift this year.

Friday was pathetic.

They are both experienced players now. Nearly 200 games each and well paid.

Personally I think Will has more credits in the bank, but he also needs to be much more consistent.

If we are going to be holding our breath about whether they will play well or be useless, then this is going to be a long year.

Seriously why say hate , it's that he's not doing what he's got a big contract for . Trust me i like him , but like Rohan he disappears when needed

Papley was sub standard on Friday but you will protect him.

5 of his last 10 games Papley hasn't laid a tackle- no wonder teams waltz out of our 50 at times.

The games not a tackling game like it was in say 16 when we had over 100 against the Cats , it's now a pressure game

That should be even more in Papley's favour then. Favours players with closing speed more than guys with upper body strength. Yet Papley's still often doing the bare minimum in this regard.

Why protect him ,he wasn't great , but still competed on 1 leg and should've had 2 goals and there were alot worse than him
Why play him half fit? Others have to carry him. He was average and plenty in the crowd thought so. What would we know……. As paying punters.
