Will history be kind to GWSteven GWSilvagni?

How will history look back on Silvagni's time as Carlton list manager?

  • Almost as overrated a list manager as he was a player. Almost.

  • As the man who butchered Carlton's list so hard they had to scapegoat another few coaches.

  • The epitome of mediocrity, reminiscent of Marc Murphy's career & captaincy.

  • As an innocent victim doomed by Carlton pervasive culture of failure.

  • Someone who did a fantastic job, overshadowed by every other aspect of the club being crap.

  • SOS keeping his job for 5 years puzzles J.Watts more than Ted Bundy evading capture so long.

- In five years he took a list that was noncompetitive and made it... marginally less noncompetitive
- Such was his limitless affection for his list that he inflicted both his sons upon it
- He fought Buckley & Hird valiantly in the race for employee who abused Favorite Son status most to keep their job
- Such was his unquestionable authenticity he gave Carlton's board a hefty dose of his authentic opinion on his way out

How will history judge this demagogue among list managers?

History has already been way too kind to this fellow. Biggest fraud in football history. The only players that make Carlton look competitive have nothing to do with his management—yet somehow he’s given credit.

Did one of the Silvagnis root your boyfriend?
I honestly expected Carlton fans to be overjoyed at the news he’d been sacked. Those not blinded by his favourite son status anyway.

Ben Silvagni would be the worst player ever to be drafted , they call him Bambi on skates.
The Blue supporters got confused with good footballer and good list manager. Everyone knew 3 years ago he was out of his depth.
He gave away pick 4, which could have been the next Dustin Martin, for 3 duds who may be delisted in two years.
He even wants credit for picking Sam Walsh even though every other club would of picked him.
In the end ,it was a sick cult and Liddell had to step in and save the club before he re-drafted Liam Sumner.

If it was just about any other person on the planet, it would be labeled as a sacking. But because it’s 🆘 it’s simply a parting of ways. You don’t ‘parting swipe’ if you’ve amicably parted ways.

SOS is a football imposter (on AND off the field) desperate to latch onto anything that makes his track record appear marginally less bereft of insight.

Elite list managers like Graham Wright earn their salt not from first round picks, but by unearthing gems with shitty ones. Hence James Worpel from pick 45, Mitch Lewis pick 76, James Sicily pick 56, Brad Hill pick 33, Paul Puopolo pick 66, Ben Stratton pick 46, Luke Bruest pick 47 and Sam Mitchell pick 36.

Where is the list of gun players Silvagni has recruited with 3rd round picks or worse?? Oh that's right, it doesn't exist because he's a complete charlatan.

Well that's my feeling and I really think Carlton supporters are blinded by their love for him as a player.
He's just the wrong personality type, getting angry all the time and going off in board meetings. He should just be a defensive coach .

I notice SOS had number one pick in the mid season draft, picked Deluca, Deluca is now delisted while Marlion Pickett is the new magic man of football.
Deluca=Fail.
SOS wanted Dunkley, he was overruled.
Another fail by you.🥜

SOS' biggest blunder came in 2012, when the Giants had the first 3 picks in the draft.
1. Whitfield
2. O'Rourke
3. Plowman

Whitfield was as much a consensus #1 as Walsh or this year's bloke, so no points for that.

But the next two! Hoo, boy! Reached for a small outside mid and a slow, medium back pocket. (Doubled down a few years later, becoming the only man dumb enough to recruit Plowman not once, but twice.)

Brodie Grundy was rated top 2 for most of that draft year. That he dropped so far in the draft is an indictment on plenty of recruiters who got spooked over drafting a ruckman early. But to have the insurance of the first three picks? When you're building a list, with concessions generous enough to build a dynasty if you do it right? And you have zero ruck talent on your books? And here's the best ruck prospect in the draft since NicNat? You've already got Ward, Coniglio, Shiel, Treloar, Adams, Whitfield, Greene, Smith for your midfield. You have Cameron and Patton up forward, and Davis down back.

You have the first 3 picks. You draft O'Rourke who if you are any judge of horseflesh, is not a patch on 8 mids you already have, and Plowman, a slow, 190cm back pocket, leaving on the board a generational, 204cm athlete who moves like a mid and gets midfielder numbers.

Should have been laughed out of the game there and then.
