Will Mcveigh Play Midfield

mcVeigh has certainly looked good in the midfield but I do not think he will be a permanent midfield player, more of a backup for when Stanton, JJ etc need a rest. I might be wrong because he certainly has been looking good so far.

I hope so. He's our best small defender so we'd be losing a bit there but he has pretty much all the attributes to be a decent midfielder. Think he just needs an extended run there to get some experience.

Yes. Performances permitting.

You're right Darealrath, he is our best small defender, but he is also a very good small forward. He's probably our best front and square crumber.

He'll be dangerous rotating with Mark Johnson between midfield and half forward.

Slattery to the back pocket.

NO...not a permenant. A run in the midfield yes, but I think you wouuld be crazy to have him as a midfield starter. Sorry but he is not good enough and better suited elsewhere. I would rather him in their as a Geelong fan when playing you but really I think you should give the young blokes more time.

I'd love to see McVeigh in the midfield as much as possible, has impressed me immensely this pre-season.

I think we can cover him in defense. Barring injury we have 5 main-stayers, Fletcher, Solomon, Bradley, McPhee and Welsh, leaves only one more for the back pocket.

Slattery has been mentioned, would be nice to really see him step up. Cole's played there before, but might be a bit slow, decent back-up if he keeps pushing hard. Nash or Lee could maybe play there if they continue to work hard. Solly I believe can sometimes play on a small, could push Lovett-Murray or Winders to half-back flank.

I just want McVeigh in the as much as possible, he has impressed me that much. Getting forward with Campo to hit targets would be great to watch.

I was hoping he would have moved to midfield on a more pernament basis a year or two ago. Hopefully he will be part of the 2nd midfield rotation this year. He needs to be really hungry for it.

If he doensnt get much midfield time this year I dont think he ever will. Now is the time for him to step up. He is more than capable.

We can't afford to have a player of his talent simply as a small defender and i think we should all be disappointed if he play's out the rest of his career as a back-pocket.

I'd like to say firstly that I'd love it if he steps up. He's got pace, beautiful delivery and a bit of biff.

But lets be under no illusions. Over the last two years he has been given plenty of midfield time. This is also a period we have generally cursed our lack of midfielders. He has failed to consistently step up.

Now, he might be a late developer, and I hope he is. But I personally suspect he won't make it in the midfield.

Lucky for him he's one of the best small defenders in the league.

I don't think he has had that many opportunities to play in the midfield. He has had spurts, he has had the odd games, but never opportunities to play weeks in a row.

He's played very good games in the middle, he's played very good finals in the middle, but as soon as we cop a side with an 'A Grade' small forward, he goes back. Play him there, leave him there and rotate him forward and we have a player.

Has the skill, is fairly quick and is strong bodied. I hope he gets the chance and shows more consistency than previously. Great user s of the ball should be in the thick of things. So I say yes , give him a crack.

this is where the delisting of paul thomas could hurt. he would have been a pretty handy back pocket replacement to allow mcveigh to push into the midfield. not shore if slattery can play back there yet, wouldnt mind seeing either winderlich of half back or even dyson to ujse his pace and long left foot.

Very much agree.

I think this is a make or break year for McVeigh. He will get his chance in the midfield and he has to grab it. The backpocket position should go to Slattery. But players such as Nash, Jolley and perhaps Hef could go back there. McVeigh looked to me to be over playing in the bp and sheedy has written in his books that a player can only play in the bp for so long. Sheeds has a bit of a tradition of giving players an apprenticeship in the bp and then moving them out to a more creative position.
