What else are they meant to say?
"Well he's a fringe player who going on current output will be shopped around for trade bait, for anything, failing that will be delisted at the end of the year"?
Everything is dandy at Geelong if you listened to Scott.

Everything is to plan.

Everything will be to plan.

Everything will come together come September.

Until it doesn't.

There is nothing wrong with saying individuals have things to work on.

Nor is there anything wrong in admitting that no club and no individual within the club makes 100% perfect decisions. So criticism of their mistakes is absolutely and entirely warranted.

FS is an avid Brown supporter so must be a tough day for him

I wouldn't say I'm an avid Brown supporter and it's actually been quite a good day. I just don't bash him for laughable reasons and can see that he does some things to an elite standard. Go back and look at his performance in the semi-final which was ok. I doubt there will be another delisted player who has shown that much at AFL level so recently. I'm not saying he's a star, far from it, but when you compare him to a very low bar (delisted players) he's clearly got a lot more potential than most.

I'd be astounded if he's not picked up. If he gets opportunities we'll see if he can make it. Ultimately he was well back in the queue at Geelong so he's not here anymore. So be it.

That's as good a summation as I've read. I suspect it's too logical and rational though. :thumbsu:

We need players to be more than just OK, especially it they're supposed to be KPP's. Brown is a good VFL player, but a C-Grade AFL player at best. I think he'll have a long VFL career. If he gets picked up by another AFL team I will be very surprised. I'm more than happy to be proven wrong about Mitch, as I have nothing personal against him. I wish him well.

Why would you want this done publicly??

Absolutely I agree that we need players better than ok. I think Brown could be a lot better than just ok which is why I'm disappointed. I think you don't realise how many genuine spuds are on AFL lists. I think you also don't realise how desperate some teams are for key position players. I mean a guy like Mark Austin played a number of games this year...

We're not going to find many of them in the dregs of the draft.

Not only that, if you were consistent and fair (which of course we're not), 'just ok' could be applied to quite a few players on our senior list right now. Off the top of my head Vardy, Simpson, Murdoch, Walker, Blicavs are all 'just ok'. You could probably say the same about James Kelly now too.

Nothing wrong with having high expectations of draftees, but they aren't going to last long if that rule is applied across the board.

I can't see him being picked up by another ALF club either and I disagree with those that were saying he could become backman his spot was up forward if he was to make it at all and the days of an easy kick up there are long gone with the flood of today,in the long run the growth spurt as a teenager may not have been the God sent every one thought it may be.I hope the next phase of his life is kind to him.Over and out from me on this one.

would be fine with brown getting delisted if he had a decent run of 5-6 games and spudded it up like Kersten did in his last month

he played well in round 1 and in round 23, I thought he was at least serviceable against north

I think he showed enough improvement this year to be persisted with at least as depth.

Some club will pick him up and he will be a good player in another year or 2 when we are near the bottom of the ladder.

Hey, you can all argue until your blue in the face that Mitch is no better or worse than any other player we might get in the draft this year, and he shouldn't have been dropped blah blah. You may well be right! But it's not going to change a thing is it? He's still been dropped, and for better or worse that's what we have to live with now.

I think ultimately it depends on what the Cats next movie is. I don't see them drafting five 18 yo's, so I expect a few mature age players (mid-20's) coming in. The arguement is going to remain will they be better than what we just cut. Especially if they're only the cast-offs from another club. No one knows the answer to that yet. But I agree, it is interesting times ahead.

That's something that bothers me- if someone else is getting rid of a player, what would we be looking for in that player that the other club couldn't find... that Wellsy must sense is there?

How often have we been successful with drafting/trading in cast-off players from many other clubs? Yeah, I know that Mooney was doing NVM at North- so he's a bit of a success story. Ottens- Richmond weren't throwing him away, were they? I'm talking about delisted players or those, like Mooney, who got traded as part of a bundle

Bottom line, Teri, is that none of us know what the answer is. Oh sure, the forum big heads will give you all their considered opinions about it, but we're completely in the dark as to what the Cats are doing right now (especially what their next move is). Until we see what happens over the next month it's all a big guessing game.

Phew! That's allrighty ™ then. I thought it was just me!

If we only discussed what we could change, this board would be a ghost town.

I disagree, it's just a sign that nothing much is happening right now other than this. So it's all we have to talk about. The joys of the off-season. If this happened during the season we'd all move on pretty quickly I suspect.

lol the Brown lovers still cant admit they were utterley wrong.

i always thought he was a better than even chance of being delisted, but i still think he has a lot of talent and will make it at a club playing as the third tall forward or back... if he gets picked up again.

i also still dont think he did a lot wrong in his time at geelong, save perhaps picking up a lot of injuries.

but whatever, he is spoken for now.

Coaches are loathe to publicly criticize players, and tend to sugar coat matters in public forums. You know it, I know it, they know it, everyone knows it. So you take what they say with a grain of salt and move on. Not sure why everyone is so surprised.

You are dealing with strong egos here, professional athletes, and while its all very well to sit back and say as professionals they should be able to take criticism, on the whole they can…. privately…... but baulk at public criticism. Personally, I find this perfectly understandable. What player wants his deficiencies spread all over the papers, internet and social media for all to read (including opposition players and coaches) while trying to address them, or work on their development as a player. A "public" bashing from your coach is the last thing you want.

The impact of public exposure by your coach can have significant consequences in other areas….and not necessarily positive ones either.

Agree. Only when it is warranted. There's one in particular who blames him for everything under the sun, that's what gives me the irrits.

That it makes you lol is a statement in itself.

Most of the BF in the know people suggested Brown was gone; I am not one of those, clearly, as usual, I hoped he may have survived to remain on our list, thought he was a talented, but very unlucky player with us, finally over his injuries, but still starved of opportunities. Writing on the wall stuff; but his last 2 AFL games were commendable.
I really hope he gets a shot somewhere, still young enough.

I admit I have never rated him as much as some here, but I sincerely hope he does prove all us doubters wrong and succeeds at another club. I hope he gets the chance.
