West Coast is keeping tabs on out-of-contract Kangaroos ball-getter Will Phillips, per the Herald Sun.

Phillips has appeared at senior level for the Roos just four times this season — and he was substituted off in two of those games — for averages of 12 disposals, two marks and five tackles.

Basically is joining Eagles it seems. Don't know who it was saying it (think Cummings) but Eagles will offer him a 2 year deal and then will just sign as a delisted free agent essentially
I can see him playing every game at the eagles and would improve the midfield

Herald Sun reported the Eagles interest first.

Has there been more of an update?

This kid is far too good to be languishing in our VFL team, and it kills me that Clarko refuses to play him for some stupid reason.

I want him to stay and play in our best 22, but if we keep him in the VFL then whichever team signs him next year is getting a quality inside midfielder.

As I understand it, he can't play anywhere except midfield, and Clarko has players he'd prefer to play mid ahead of him.

Could be one of those "he's not a spud, we just have too many like-for-like players in his position" deals, where it's best for all concerned that he move elsewhere.

Someone will give you a second rounder for him IMHO.

would be shocked if anyone did this.

think hes more likely to be out of the afl than on a list next year.

Tend to agree, the game seems to be moving away from these types.

Phillips, Dev Robertson, Jhye Clark, Angus Sheldrick, Finn Macrae, and Ben Hobbs as some recent examples of high picks who seem to be on the outer, or are at the very least considered 'gettable'.

The small contested mid, with limited athleticism on the spread, and (generally) poor footskills isn't in vogue. Basically the Matt Crouch prototype, and you can only really carry one of them.

Phillips probably gets another go, and he at least seems to have defensive intent which will help his cause.

Wherever he ends up, suspect he'll be passed within 18 months by more dynamic options though.

5th year top 3 draft pick and already 50 games
I think what you see is what you get and thats barely above a player you would select in the mid season draft from a VFL team. Really cant see what the clubs would see in him that North have not already seen

Yep. Zero trade value .
Would be lucky to find a home.
Maybe a club throws a very late nothing pick or insignificant upgrade of a later pick
West Coast would be his best option to have a last chance at making a career but really struggle to see how he fits
North will have a squeeze on list spots this year and wouldnt want to carry him another year

A third rounder at best.
It will do him good to get to a team that doesn't have as many mids ahead of him.
He was also spoken highly of as a leader, and West Coast need some more leaders after Allen leaves.

We have graham as our only real senior mid who can play HFF Phillips should rate his chances of getting in the midfield rotation here

For Eagles its kind of the player we need. A contested mid who can tackle and lock down on a opponent.

I thought he might have found a role as a run with player after doing well on Daicos. I can see why North aren't playing him though as their midfield is loaded with young talent, but a defensive minded mid who can win his own ball should be able to find a spot somewhere.

His defensive work is exactly what they need. Is a mystery he is not playing more.

I’d be offering up Chesser as a straight swap. He has had injury problems but West Coast have a plethora of hbf players which is where he has shown the most. Been reported out of contract Chesser has Melbourne clubs interested. Could be agents spicing up a lifeline!

Both Phillips and Chesser have been R1 picks that haven’t worked at initial clubs and a change might suit both. Certainly a better deal for North than Fisher or Daniels.

Other than that, he leaves as a delisted fa and no need to pay anything to North.
