Unrestricted Free Agent Will Phillips [delisted]

I’d be offering up Chesser as a straight swap. He has had injury problems but West Coast have a plethora of hbf players which is where he has shown the most. Been reported out of contract Chesser has Melbourne clubs interested. Could be agents spicing up a lifeline!

Both Phillips and Chesser have been R1 picks that haven’t worked at initial clubs and a change might suit both. Certainly a better deal for North than Fisher or Daniels.

Other than that, he leaves as a delisted fa and no need to pay anything to North.
Sold!

Phillips is surplus for us, and we need more outside run.

His defensive work is exactly what they need. Is a mystery he is not playing more.
Looks like he's getting his shot tonight. I assume he'll get the run with role on Richards. Keen to see how he does as Ed's season has been amazing so far.

There are about 15-20 players in the state leagues who aren't getting a shot who would have a similar output to Phillips.

He's a bust. Too small. Too slow. Lacks skill.

So pissed at our recruiting staff for this pick. Was the wrong pick from the start

Wish him all the best if he finds another team

Who at pick 3 should we have drafted in your opinion.

Max Holmes would have been okay....

Genuinely, GWS have a need for midfield depth, could we see the return of the straight swap where Gruzewski heads to North? Both need a fresh start.

Phillips is better off competing with 30+ year olds that competing with LDU, Powell, Sheezel, Wardlaw who are all early to mid 20s.

Yeah thought you would say him. Did anyone at all experts or others have Holmes going in the top 3 at any stage what so ever though.

Gru is worth a lot more than Phillips. I think we'd be bullish on Ough, Leake, Rowston or even McMullin being better than Phillips in another 12 months.

Holmes wasn’t a chance to go in the top 15. Let alone 3.

It’s the worst draft of all time. The Covid year killed any chance to see how good these kids could be.

Phillips (though I'd keep him) + 2026 R3... hang up the phone and wait. If no return call, fine by me.

Unless we're happy to just take three mid-to-late draft picks this year, we're going to have to give up something to get something.

We're running out of time to get our Darling successor locked in alongside Larkey.

Acquiring an AFL-ready KPF needs to be our off-season priority. We aren't going to find one of those in the draft.

I think we also need someone to compete against Logue and Pink for the last KPD in the best 22. Whitlock won't be ready to play full-time seniors from round 1 next year.

Furthermore, if the AFL take away our two extra rookie spots, we're going to have a list squeeze.

I'd prefer to keep Phillips as midfield depth and Duursma for his uptapped potential.

But imo we need good KPPs at both ends of the ground more than we need Duursma or Phillips.

We could look to trade our second rounders to get those. But even if we find suitors, it still doesn't resolve these issues:
  • we're currently two players over the maximum list size (due to Tucker and Bergman LTIs)
  • the AFL will likely cut our rookie list by another two
  • we need the space to draft three kids

That's seven list spots.

So we could delist Payne, Bergman, K Dawson, Tucker, Teakle, Trembath, and Ford at the end of the year, and we'd still need to find another spot or two.

Of the other OOCs...

We need CCJ or someone else as ruck depth.
Pink has locked himself a 2026 spot
Harvey just kicked four goals last weekend.
Banch deserves a preseason. (Arguably Trembath does too - but then we'll have to find someone else to delist)
Maley is about all the KPF depth we have.

And then there's Phillips.

Its a tricky one but I think balancing our overall list needs should have primacy this year.

Mihocek is perfect for this.

I can't respond how I'd like but the Darling replacement shouldn't be too hard to attract, we might even have already in Ayden (the forward part).

Obviously keeping Zane should be the priority! Is it that hard to make an informed decision on him? Hopefully the kid gets some time which he needs as **** it, what have we to lose?

Delist 5 take 3 (if the AFL pulls the pin)

-Bergman
-K Dawson
-Tucker
-Teakle
-Ford

KISS principle this off-season, spew a few times, go - push for finals in 2026.
