As BSA said it is a futile exercise, however I will state this, after watching the footy marathon last Friday night I would conclude that the standard of the game (in all facets, coaching, fitness, skills and particularly speed)increasee at such a rate that would see a premiership team absolutley shit on a premiership team from 5 years before. (5 years is an approximation)

2000 Bombers would probably (and that's probably) extend that out to about 7)

Christ, the way you carry on about the greatness of Essendon, I'm surprised that your club hasn't found a cure for cancer, solved all the problems in the Middle East, AND come around to help me fill in the cryptic puzzle known as the Business Activity Statement.

My club have won 4 premierships, and we're damn proud of every single one of them. I don't care about how we rate against your teams or anyone else's. Just be thankful that you support a team that has been able to deliver to you the ultimate glory. Go to a Cats, Lions, Swans, Demons or Saints fan and try and explain to them "the Premiership feeling". You can't because it cannot be described. I'm lucky enough to have been there in '96 and '99, and I'm damn happy for all those footy fans whose teams have delivered to them similar joy.

Essendon is a football club, and a damn successful one at that. We take our hats off to them. But you're no more special than any other footy club in the land. And as important as Essendon are too you, remember that myself and the other Roo fans feel the same way about North, and all the other fans here are to their clubs.

Enjoy your glory, you deserve it and that's your right. But don't ****ING denigrate the glory of other premiership teams.

And Rice, to be totally honest I am quite proud of the fact that my side has won 26 wooden spoons yet still very much alive in the competition.

With some of the statements that Dan has come out with, at least I don't have to cringe with embarrassment like some of your teams supporters would after listening to him.

Look, North have been a very successful side since 1974. That's what this topic "evolved" into. But gocatsgo, just stated (and I confirmed), that during that time, Essemdon have still been more successful than North.

I acknowledge the success of the Kangaroos. They have been THE most innovative, forward thinking, resourceful club in the competiton. Essendon don't even come close in that respect.

But I also think it is a fair comment that NONE of Norths 4 flags were won by super outstanding teams. In the 1970s, both their GF winning teams finished 3rd !

That's not a criticism of North, it is a compliment, since it shows how hard they had to work for the flags, especially 1977 where they played FIVE finals games. A remarkable effort.

I know you can't compare different eras, but COMPARITIVELY speaking, the Essendon 2000 and 1985 teams stack up well against everybody. When comparing different eras, you can only really look at statistics. The Essendon 2000 team had a percentage of 160, meaning they won their matches by about 10 goals. This puts them right up there with Collingwood of 1929, Hawthorn of 1989, and Essendon of 1950.

Unfortunately, we can't ever find out how they would go against them, but we can lllok at the record books and get some idea.

Now, I am VERY proud of my club. Very proud. The fact that we have acheived something unheralded this year tingles me with pride all the way down my spine. If I sound arrogant, over-bearing, or cocky....... sorry. But I believe our club is a mighty club and I will defend it

I'm NOT denigrating the glory of other premiership teams. Not at all. I am just stating that SOME premiership teams are stronger than others. Which is a fact. Just because Adeliades 1997 team wasnt that strong copared to other GF winning teams, doesn't make it an less glorious for that club. A premiership is a premiership no matter how you win it. But some premiership teams are stonger than others.

What have I said that would embarass my own supporters ? All I've been saying is that Essendons 2000 and 1985 teams were extremeley strong. Perhaps stronger than any of Norths 4 winning GF sides. Does anyone seriously disagree with that ?

Hang on a minute!

I'm not saying who had the better sides between North and Essendon when they won premierships. To be quite honest, I couldn't give a fat rats toss bag!

What I am saying is that, despite winning the same amount of flags in that time. Essendon, in my opinion have been a more successful side than North. North have had two good eras, Essendon have been reasonably consistent.

Essendon have won more Pre-Season Premierships, and overall have had better teams than North during the last 30 years.

Essendon won their 4 Premierships on their own. For North to win their first 2, they had to steal top players from other clubs to do it. If the 10 year rule hadn't have come in when it did, North would have 2 Premierships only.

Sure the 70s North were very aggressive in their recruitment policy, but hell, if by the end of this year's trading week you found that you had recruited James Hird, Michael Voss, Anthony Koutafides, and Wayne Carey, I don't think you'll be complaining if you won the flag. Quite frankly, in 50 years of being in the VFL with nothing to show for it, North Melbourne had to do something.

Essentially, the four players that North recruited (Brent Crosswell, John Rantall, Doug Wade, and Barry Davis) added the "street-smarts" and "steel" to what was already a pretty handy team. And who were the handy players? David Dench, Malcolm Blight, Keith Greig, John Burns, Wayne Schimmelbusch, Arnold Briedis, Sam Kekovich, Mick Nolan, Barry Cable, and Ross Henshaw. To use a modern day analogy, we artificially did what Essendon did this season in having experienced players (Hird, Long, Misiti, Mercuri, Fletcher etc.) adding that extra nous and knowledge to a young and talented group of players (Lloyd, Lucas, Caracella, Blumfield, Ramanaskus, the Johnson boys etc.). Okay, we bought them, but then again, we didn't have a history of success, so unlike an Essendon or a Carlton, we had to raid other clubs.

By 1976, only Crosswell remained from the recruits, and in 1977, we added Stan Alves from Melbourne. But by that stage, those players with potential (Schimma, Dench, Blight and co) now had the street smarts. Alves made little difference to whether we would have made or missed out on the '77 Flag. But the ones who were there from '74 to '76 were now doing the guiding role over the likes of Montgomery, Sutton, Tanner, Icke, Baker, Byrne, and McCann.

So, it's true we bought the 1975 premiership, but our 1977 one was built upon those foundations. With you being a Geelong fan, do you ever wonder what might have happened if any one of the '89, '92, '94, or '95 teams had two or three players who had won a flag with another club? Maybe they could've added that little bit of "steel and coolness" that could've taken you over the line.
