Will the Tim Kelly trade go down as one of the worst ever ?

Or both the western Australian clubs could of got Tim Kelly in the 2015 or 2016 drafts.

The point was how come Tim Kelly was taken in the 2017 draft? In the 2017 WAFL season, He was averaging 28 disposals a game in the WAFL and kicked 20-25 goals that season.

In the 2016 WAFL season, he was only averaging 20 disposals. So he didn't stand out.

In the 2015 WAFL season, he again was averaging 20 disposals a game. Again, he didn't stand out.

I think you will find it was more than just football reasons that he was overlooked locally all those years.

Probably similar to things you hear now about him not being the most likable bloke.

Why so much focus on this trade??
Because West Coast are last which begs the question how will they get back to playing finals.

This leads to looking at the list for which younger players will push them back up and, dear god, it looks disastrous.

How did it get this bad?
The obvious answer is trading away 2 years of draft picks for Tim Kelly.

Head in the sand Eagles folks like to point back at history showing West Coast have bounced back after a couple of years but it's different this time.

Remember The Big Short, the movie about the global financial crisis?

The eagles are experiencing a subprime player tsunami. There are some great players at the top but there are only so many spuds you can carry. what's more the eagles have been drafting in older players hoping they can contribute immediately and plug some holes. This only delays the inevitable and you are left with a team full of unskilled list cloggers.

Got Willi Rioli with pick 52 in 2016.If Rioli never existed it might have been Kelly. The Eagles were thinking about it and offering advise back then.Stuff like if you want to be an AFL footballer you have to do x ,x,x and x and improve on your defensive side and pressure acts and a few other parts of your game that dont come naturally .He would have got drafted by the Eagles if Geelong did not get in first in 2017 but Liam Ryan,Oscar Allen and Tim Kelly with picks from 20+ was always unlikely.

Side note: I'd also like to nominate the Judd trade as one of the worst ever. Crazy right. Judd played 145 games for Carlton but compared to what West Coast got it ain't even close.

The Judd trade wasn’t a failure it just didn’t achieve anything in particular

That doesn’t make it a bad trade it’s just a trade

Judd did change our culture and won a brownlow and a couple of memorable finals with us.

Also Dennis Armfield who was the sweetener draft pick in the trade, forged a better and more respectable career than Chris Masten who was a bust.

Eagles won the trade, but absolutely have no regrets over it.

No I wouldn’t expect you to it didn’t hurt carlton at all it just didn’t sort of create the magical step up from one half of the table to contenders in the other half like a best-case scenario would have done. That’s no knock on Judd or the club btw

Maybe he didn't live up to the pick 3 hype but 12 seasons, 215 games and a premiership is hardly a bust. Not sure who Dennis Armstrong is but you're welcome to make your case.

Had a couple of tinnies this evening

Meant Armfield.

Was a great clubman and stalwart of the club

well 2 it was Judd and pick 46 (Dennis Armfield) for Kennedy, Pick 3 (Chris Masten) and Pick 20 (tony Notte)

Kennedy and Masten played in the 2015 and 2018 grand finals for west coast

look at who the eagles drafted between 2015-2018 both grand final years and you will realise how badly rhey drafted.very few left from those draft years and in hindsight most probably should have kept their picks.Time to rebuild and make no mistakes in their drafting this year and move on..

Yeah it was bad in hindsight for West Coast but when a player who just came off such a good season nominates you, you make it happen. That wasn't a bad decision at the time.

The real issue for the Eagles is their failure to draft well for several years prior to the Kelly trade. Most notably drafting Jarrod Brander when they could have moved back and got Kelly without paying a fortune.

The trade was also bad for Kelly, in the sense he looked like a dickhead by refusing to go to Freo, who could have satisfied Geelong at the trade table more easily. And look where Freo are now.

When I think of players who have horribly under-rated careers I think of Chris Masten (215 games) and Troy Cook (198 games).

I'll never understand how longevity is seen as a bad thing.

The fact that the Judd trade is even discussed here shows that somebody is a fool. Judd was great for Carlton. Carlton lifted with him around
West Coast also did fine without him. I see it as win-win
Judd wanted to leave West Coast. Carlton was happy to take him. He was one of the best at the time. No-brainer.

John Pitura from South Melbourne to Richmond comes to mind. Richmond sent Whale, Teasdale and some other guy to South Melbourne. All were a success at SM. Pitura was a disappointment at Richmond

Jeff Hogg to Fitzroy, while Richmond got Broderick, Dundas and Gale was a howler as well. Dundas was steak knives, but Michael Gale was handy, and Broderick was excellent. Hogg at Fitzroy was never as good.

My favourite is Leigh Colbert leaving Geelong. Thanks Leigh. You were a disloyal utensil, but your 'potential' netted us so much more than you would ever have delivered
