Will we ever see another 3peat???

I'm kinda saying the Hawks of the 80's couldn't do it and neither the cats from 2007-2011,They are two if the most dominant teams. Maybe Brisbane and this current hawks team had circumstances that allowed for a 3peat.

But it's not a 3peat however you put it "Theoretically" or not, it's not a 3peat.

You do understand the concept behind a 3peat right?
I know it's not a threepeat and yes I do, I'm not ******ed.

I'm just saying - to Geelong fans it's just as good as one, so let it go.

Are you sure you're a Hawks fan? Blasphemy!

if the AFL decides to bring in more teams and load them with picks then who ever is the best team at the time has every chance to win 3 just like the hawks.
Collingwoods 4 was just after three new clubs so maybe thers something in it

No draft let alone priority picks back then

A funny old thread in that it has merit given the difficulty of the achievement and the recent Hawks exit has brought the discussion forward understandably, but with the Giants a worthy suitor you almost want to put this discussion on hold until the 2020s.

Hawks 2015 being the oldest premiership team ever. 1991 was famouly too old too slow too good but they were much younger across the park. May provide a clue

Theres always teams getting a run of grand finals but crash bash footy has seen them bashed up. Even the lions. They reallydid seem to think 2004 was it for them. Hodge mitchell while seeming to have slowed down on friday, are still in relatively good shape.

Its the style of footy, but its also better care off the field. We may see a lot more threepeats

GWS have the best chance out of any club in the history of the AFL.

If things fall to place then they could potentially go for 4.

If things go right for GWS and they manage to keep their talent fit and on the park they could win 5-8 in a row. Their talent is simply amazing and they still have so much to trade out and bring in via the draft.

I'm sorry but these sort of comments are ridiculous. Yes GWS may be in contention for 5-8 years but talent alone doesn't win you flags. A threepeat is hard enough. 5-8 in a row? Come on.

GWS need to transition from a club with talent to an organization which expects and achieves success. Many fail to do that. Look how many decades it took for geelong and sydney to become that. Collingwood seem determined not to. If they were, thyd simply demand success, not reward thir favourite players with jobs

I havent seen anything thus far to GWS wont. But it still remains to be seen. They dont have any baggage to prevent them

On paper maybe but you need a lot of luck to win 1 flag let alone 3 in a row.

Injuries, a brain fade etc. can really cost you a season.

While there is debate around whether sides who had the right to challenge before 1930 played their best footy in earlier finals history shows that a double chance or challenge system assists a teams ability to get to the grand final and with it increase their chances of winning the flag and consecutive flags.

With the double chance increasing to the top 4 in 2000 the ability to win a flag from 3rd or 4th has increased, so sides no longer need to dominate the home and away season in order to achieve success. So while on one hand equalisation measures should make a run of premierships impossible if you get things right the finals system helps.

DOUBLE CHANCE SYSTEMS

1901 - no double chance
1898-1900 - minor premier
1902-1906 - side with the best record including the 2 finals
1907-1930 - minor premier
1931-1971 - Top 2
1972-1990 - Top 3
1991 - Top 2 and winner 3v4
1992-1993 - Top 2 and highest ranked winner from 3v6 or 4v5
1994-1999 - 2 highest ranked losers from 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5
2000-current - Top 4

GRAND FINALIST LADDER POSITIONS
It can clearly be seen how much the minor premier challenge, top 2 and top 3 double chances improved respective success. Only 4 flags were won in 40 odd years from outside top 2 when that double chance was in play, in the 18 years of a top 3 double chance 4 flags were won from third, in the 16 years of a top 4 double chance we've seen 4 flags from third, but only 6 from the minor premier which is the lowest rate of any finals system that's been given a reasonable length of time.

They said noone can win the flag from outside the top four.
They said noone could go back to back.
Adelaide did both after trailing north by 4 goals at half time in the 98 grandfinal.

They then said no body could do 3 and then Brisbane did it almost right away.

10 years before it was done again.

I don't listen to the doomsady media saying GWS are going to dominate. I have to many grey hairs to not know what victorians are like with their scare mongering about non vic teams.

Probably be another ten years before it happens agin.

For the 10th bloody time Adelaide lost that first final by 10 goals and didn't get eliminated. Stop bringing it up.

It's happened twice in fifteen years and Geelong from 2007 to 2011 were certainly capable but failed to get it done. It's undoubtedly a great achievement - one which hasn't been done often in VFL / AFL history - but perhaps the professional era has actually made it easier since with greater professionalism comes more consistency and fewer upsets. The best teams win more often and the best team is more likely to win the premiership.
