I remember it more from the 'Clarke is a coward because he won't bat at 3' stupidity.

The only time that makes any sense is when your team is relentlessly battling and you need to make a statement to your teammates.

Sort of irrelevant because it presumably wasn't his call and he wasn't the skipper, but one of the greatest pieces of captaincy I can remember (and it wasn't amazing in its complexity, just it's outcome) was the Kolkota test of 2001. VVS had made 50-odd like it was shelling peas in the first innings while his teammates capitulated. On the back of that performance (I think he was last man out) Ganguly promoted him from 6 to 3 and swapped him with David to basically continue from where he left off.

We all know what happened next.
