Willie Rioli "on leave" from Port Adelaide after social media post

Where was I doing that? Im dismissive of idiots trying to say its specific to one club and trying to take some moral high ground like a bunch of English cricket supporters.

All clubs were more racists in the 80s and 90s mate, the world was more racist in the 80s and 90s.

You're really stretching to score some hits here. Stop it.

But thanks for telling me how I should feel
This was the post that initially responded to:
Willie jumped online and dropped his hate on Hawthorn and he got a return serve from social media. While wrong, it has nothing to do with Hawthorn FC
Which to me sounds like someone trying to diminish what happened to Willie Sr because it happened 35 years ago.

So he shows the ball at Jiath, cops a bunch of racial abuse, so he tells everyone why he hates Hawthorn.

Are you doubting that he doesn’t feel that way? I’m guessing that you don’t believe him, based on the words “trying to justify” and “convenient” and “some criticism”.

Which is ok if you are, all disagreeable opinions welcome when polite.

I think the showing of the ball was a poor choice. I hate any players including anyone from my team doing it. I think he did it and regretted it and was worried about the reaction.

Personally if I was Dunstall I would never have told the story like he did. I just wouldn't go there and I can understand Rioli being upset.

However I think the whole action that started it (the showing of the ball) wasn't related to the Dunstall story it was just a thing that s*it blokes do on the football field.

To save you asking me about Tex, no I don't think he is a great guy either.

(Nah you’re safe, wasn’t gonna ask about Tex, couldn’t give two cents about him.)

As for showing the ball, I don’t think I’ve seen Rioli do that any time before, but happy to be shown as wrong. Happy to take him at his word, but responding to the trolls was never gonna end well. Let’s let this storm die down. Until the “mainstream” media and the AFL use it to hype the return match later in the year.

Wholeheartedly agree. It’s almost like playing with fire and being surprised when you get burnt.
Hang on a minute.

Calling out someone for being a campaigner and then they prove they are a campaigner with their response.

He's just proved his point about the campaigners being campaigners.

Hardly "burnt".

The campaigners should get life bans from attending games

It's really not that hard. Racism isn't acceptable at all. Ever.

As for rioli , it probably isn't very professional to do what he did. But it doesn't justify the response from racists. If you have an issue with him hating your club say that. Don't just see an indigenous player and that's your first port of call. It's weak. And ugly.

I agreed with the post I quoted which didn’t endorse racist comments which I don’t either and of course it’s not an acceptable consequence it is unfortunately a foreseeable one though.
Its foreseeable that if indigenous Australians make any public comment on social media the same sort of response will follow.

You think it’s not foreseeable that if a relatively high profile sportsman makes a public comment of that nature on social media that it’s going to draw that sort of response? I mean in an ideal world it wouldnt but in reality you can set your watch to it.

That's the opposite of what I said.

I'll repeat it:

Its foreseeable that if indigenous Australians make any public comment on social media the same sort of response will follow.

The thing you said fits within the the set of the thing I said.

Even if an indigenous person from a completely different field than sport says something that isn't of that nature there will always be a similar response to some degree.

You seem to making the point that's his high sporting based public profile and the nature of the comments that generate that sort of response when that response is made against all sorts of indigenous people making all sorts of comments, some completely non controversial.

Time for opposition clubs to be more strident in their comments.

Rioli and Mitchell have a relationship. I know Rioli's post might've made it difficult, but I wanted to see Mitchell come out yesterday and say "you grubs perpetuating this racism in the name of the Hawthorn football club are a disgrace, you're not fans, you're not welcome at the club, we don't want you as members. If you're so pathetic that you derive pleasure from racially abusing footballers anonymously, you aren't a Hawthorn supporter, you aren't a football supporter, and you should give yourself an upper cut."

Nup.

He isn’t stupid. He knew with the way he acted in the game and what he said online afterwards….that he’d get blowback.

Could have easily disabled the comments on his social media accounts.

Instead he chooses to delete the accounts…..

Me, me, me, me, me oh woah is me.

Narcissistic, victim mentality is becoming the legacy that the Rioli’s are leaving behind in this game. It’s a shame because the name itself would be enough alone to get you drafted…..now clubs will see it and steer clear from the drama.

What a horrible horrible comment.

Yeah I get you and I did misread the tone on the first read, my bad. And I largely agree with your last paragraph but reckon you could replace the word indigenous with any sort of group of people and it'd still ring true. The joys of social media.

Thanks for the lesson. Ever heard the expression "don't speak ill of the dead"? The tenor of Dunstall's comments were in poor taste, a weird choice for a legend speech, and I think the vast majority of people could understand why they wouldn't have sat well with Willie.
I was taught, 'There's no point showing respect for the dead if you didn't show respect while they were alive.'

Not surprised to be seeing your 2c worth.

Like a magical genie.....just rub the indigenous lamp and south of the yarra will appear.

Do I get 3 wishes?

Nah brother, your far better requesting wishes from Malingee. Even more appropriate for you would be Barraiya.

I love Dunstall but that was really poor from him and Jnr absolutely has a right to feel pissed. His dad must have been a brilliant footballer to get anywhere near the AFL, Dunstall basically shone a light on how tough it would have been for indigenous players back then getting the piss taken out of them, really disrespectful. To tell the story just after Willie Snr died is just so poor on so many levels. It reminds me of the Kennett story with the Rioli's, it lacked class and shows they still have a lot to learn as all of us do.

Here is Dunstall's speech, again. It was 2 years after Rioli died. Where exactly does it lack class?

I didn’t him showing the ball. I know all the old-timers hate it but it was exactly what half of our team would do.

Your basically quoting Mitchell word for word from last year when one of our players was racially abused.
