Most players accused of homophobia have been indigenous (and play for a non Vic club). Is there also a tinge to those who keep harping on about that?

You know what, there could be. It's hard to tell with any certainty though because they can hide behind the sanctimony of moral crusading about the well fare of sexual minorities. It does work the other way sometimes as well, overly criticising sexual minorities for racial bigotry.

Not saying certain groups are more prone to homophobia, but there are some socio economic/cultural differences. I do wonder if the fact political correctness isn't as pushed in certain environments plays a role. Or they still hold views we may not agree with, or even if they don't, casual name calling is more accepted. Like a young fella who grew up in Darwin or Broken Hill (like Tex) is going to have different messaging to somehow who grew up in the inner north of Melbourne, though online and social media is reducing those differences. The fact all but maybe 1 who have been suspended are not from white Anglo backgrounds, esp Vic metro, might speak of some of these environmental differences. Not making excuses or anything, but it is something to consider.

Good points. From my non pc POV the F word is a stand-in for accusing another hetero male of being less than a man.

I'm sure most men who hurl this word as an insult seldom think about sexual minorities, let alone waste any time contemplating ways of doing them any harm. So I'd argue it really isn't homophobic, just in bad taste.

Perhaps AFL players should go the route of the NBA where calling players 'bitches' is a perfectly acceptable word to use to denigrate an opponent and insinuate he's not a real man.

Although I did recently get infracted for calling a female journalist that, so who knows how the AFL and other minorities would react. Would women complain because they think it's offensive to them, a man calling another man a pussy ass bitch? Who knows?

Some youtube examples from the NBA. Interesting to note that an NBA coach was tossed out for calling LeBron a bitch but players frequently call each other and the refs don't do anything about it.

Jimmy Butler calling Dillon Brooks a bum and a bitch and no repercussions suffered:

A female fan calling Lebron a pussy ass bitch and no repercussions suffered other than a derriere hurt security guard that's an obvious LeBron fan telling her to be quiet:

Udoka calling LeBron a bitch, LeBron doesn't like it and gets him tossed out:

Yes there is the risk it gets weaponised...sounds crazy, but someone might provoke another player trying to get them to say something bad. And who knows what else will be considered an offence worthy of suspension?

Of course none of this is to say homophobia on field is okay, but we should also be careful with how much we allow the afl to enlarge their powers.

I suppose its a wider societal issue. In the UK and I'm sure increasingly here its harder to exercise free speech in general.
