I can't help but think I am making a rod for my own back here..

Nothing against anyone from season 1, but so far this lot have taken it to another level

We - well, I, anyway - had time to think about it after last year's offer. Which I was considering, not flat out ignoring. :D

Incidentally, I see that I was unduly pessimistic about having to wait until January for news about unexpected surgeries, we're now getting it in November.

Love your style Fred- a true wordsmith, and your knowledge of Geelong is possibly unsurpassed on this board for obvious reasons.
Having just read Pivo's as well- now there is some unbelievable in depth knowledge too.

Just one little question Fred- in your listed favourites, no mention of Billy Goggin.
Intentional omission, or ...?

Hang on.
I've made it one paragraph in.
Push bikes from Melbourne to Geelong? I think Fred is confusing his dad's stories with arwon.

I think there are certainly people on this board whose knowledge of Geelong surpasses mine, but thank you for the kind words.

Billy Goggin was certainly a good player, and would be in my "Best" team in combo with Farmer. He also, of course, had a pretty good W-L ratio as a coach. But it was a "favourites" list, and I just didn't warm to him much, I don't really know why. I can probably do no better than quote Tom Brown:
I do not like thee, Doctor Fell,
The reason why - I cannot tell;
But this I know, and know full well,
I do not like thee, Doctor Fell.

Only joking, I definitely didn't positively dislike him.

I don't understand the reference.
The stories didn't come from dad, actually, but from mum, my aunt (dad's sister), grandma, and grandma's brother (dad's uncle).

Fair enough, I thought it WAS intentional; interesting because I spent half my childhood/youth trying to emulate his stab passes, and always had him in my best 10 ever at Geelong.
Glad we all have varied opinions- pretty drab if it wasn't the case.

Ok, sorry.
It was said that arwon walked from Nowra to race in the Melbourne cup.
It took a lot of years, and a lot of research to find that he actually caught a boat.

Maybe Geelong and Melbourne were just closer to each other back in the day :D

Aahh, yes, I had heard that story, though I think I may have heard it about Archer.

Lol.
Hey I'm not about to knock Fred's dad. Even if it looks like I am.
That's a fair effort.

I had a mate live here and he trained for a year to ride around the bay.
Left from Melbourne, onto Geelong and then queens cliff, ferry, the Sorrento etc.
Came to a screeching halt when he hit Geelong.

Hopped on a train back to Melbourne :D

Yeah it might have been actually.
Always confused them due to the army wings base in Nowra for some reason.
And that arwon and Nowra are mirrored.

*shrugs*

Yes... I think we were Manhunter... and now this year is Silence of the Lambs ..... (Not sure who is Lecter and who is Clarice)

but to defend our Y1 ...without its quality ..there would have been no demand for the "Fafa Beans and Chianti" this year

Folklore has it that John Batman, who had already founded Melbourne in 1835, and had set up a base camp at Indented Head, then organised some surveying of Geelong township in 1838. On walking back to Melbourne with John Pascoe Fawkner, the as yet unnamed township was the subject of discussion and angst.
"Gee, long way to Melbourne".
"That's what we'll call the place- Geelong!"

Welcome to another edition of the Inquisition, tonight I sit down with someone who I approached last year (and who just flat out ignored my request!) and who has mentioned initially he wasn't really interested in the idea/concept at all.

He probably just didn't know what a PM was.

Should have sent a carrier pigeon instead.:D

Fred an outstanding coverage of your era of support. I have to say you did mention a number of my favourites too. Closter was a brilliant centreman. Donahue kicking 100 goals in a season and almost a second. Marshall was before his time in attacking from the backline, Ken Newland was a very balanced footballer. Billy Ryan had a set of hands on him like Stewie Leowe of StKilda and an even better CHF. He complimented Wadey perfectly. Peter Walker is why I'm sad his grandson left us this year. You didn't mention John Sharrock either who I though was an outstanding footballer. Tony Polinelli was a beauty too. They were great times, thanks for the memories.

Oh, and Geoff Rosenow

I did actually mention Sharrock, my favourite was the day he kicked 7 against Hawthorn while dodging more fists and boots than Bruce Lee.

you pick one was good mates with Geoff Rosenow. :D

Thanks again for the tremendous effort Willo - you're doing the Parky name proud - and thanks Fred for your thoughts, memories and insights. Malarkey was a favourite growing up - could never get over how dour he was on the field. It was a shock to finally see his smile on the old Scanlans card.
