Negative - 1st pick long gone, 3rd-4th under threat... The way we're going we're gonna end up with 9th pick!! :(:(:(
In round 10 we were 0-10 and 18th. Now were 3-10 and 15th above Essendon, brisbane and suns. Friday we could be 4-10 and be above collingwood if we beat them.

were more likely to get pick 5-6 now.

Yeah I'm hoping for pick 5 I think. Previous pick 5s in the last decade: Franklin, Pendlebury, Boak, Grant, Hurley, Cunnington, Polec, Buntine, Stringer, Kolodjashnij, De Goey, Parish. I think there's been some pretty ordinary analysis that has rated pick 5 as the best of the top 10, and I'd agree skimming through the names on the lists.

A forward as good as Lance or Jake would be nice but also settle for a classy mid like SPS.

Don't want pick 6, as it is generally cursed. Exception possibly being Wingard, although after the weekend not so sure.

Just a bit nice right?

This week will be telling. A clash with another mid-table under-performer ala Port.

If we overcome Collingwood even pick 5-6 could be in danger. I'm not sure how to feel about it either.

The kids are playing good and we've blooded fistfuls of them - the wins are just a bonus, and maybe an inconvenient one at that.

Top 5 draft pick area in general gives you a good shot at landing a star. They're invaluable, especially for us given our lack of access to the top of the draft in recent years.

It's remarkable they're teams much worse than us. It really makes you appreciate how bad things can get and how well, relatively speaking, we are positioned to the real basketcases out there.

Yeah I think history shows that there isn't a lot of difference in quality among the first 6-7 picks. The only qualifier being that there's usually only 1 key forward prospect out of those 6 or 7, so if you're looking for a specific type of player then you have to hope that the teams with a pick before yours aren't also looking for that specific type of player.

If you're planning on drafting a midfielder anyway then pick 5 is as good as pick 1.

I reckon its perfect for us that we get 5 - 8 instead of 2 - 4. Recruiters will have the freedom to be riskier, to find the kid with scope to grow, not just the safe pick of the kid who dominated 18s.

Wouldn't be worried about us not getting a top 5-6 pick. Play 6 of our next 9 games against top 8 teams, even if the majority of them are at home.

Yep we are playing better but we are no world beaters and our final few games rank with the hardest in the league - we will be fine for a very early pick.

Fremantle vs Port Adelaide
10 Barlow (Frem)
8 Neale (Frem)
5 Pavlich (Frem)
3 Mundy (Frem)
2 Crozier (Frem)
2 Spurr (Frem)

Not bad to take all the votes in a game that was close for most of it.

Neale extends his lead for Freo with 38 votes. Barlow into 2nd after his BOG.

LOL D Pearce probably had a better game than the Brisbane one

Today I was thinking about the last few games of the season. Part of me thinks that losing these might be a good thing to give the players some hunger over the summer.

A bit of rationalisation going on there. Surely no one believes a pick in the 5-8 range is a good a pick as one that falls <5.

The whole point in getting a top -5 pick is the lack of risk: you're assured, almost, at least an above average player. If not a star.

I'd rather have a top 5 pick who we know is going to be a good player than pick 8 who we'll have to roll the dice with on some speculative player, or a draft slider with knee problems.

So long as we're not damaging our culture with uncompetitive losses i see no problem in losing. EG we could have easily rolled over vs Port but we kept on fighting despite our season being over and after a host of floggings. Yet we kept fighting. I'm not sure there's many other teams that could have done that. Good enough for me. Even if we lost i'd have been just as happy with the performance.

Ditto with the whole season. Winning or losing means nothing per se, it's the culture and player development that matter. Culture is probably the one reason I'm hesitant to lobby for us to lose chasing high draft picks. Once you've lost that winning culture it's hard to bring back.

True but still hard to get a reading on where we're at.

I could see us getting over the top of some of these ~top-8 teams (ala Port) and maybe even pull off a shock win against a top-4 team, such wins will really loosen the grip we had on a top-5 pick.

Pavlich played great.. although a couple of times i think he needs to make more leads out from 50 meters

apart from that - great win against port

Know what your saying but guys like selwood and stringer slid to picks between 5-8 and if there is someone of that quality available, I would be more than happy with a pick in that range.

Roast from me too. How can we let the away supporters make a bigger sound than our passionate fans.

I guarantee we will make more noise than Collingwood supporters next Friday.

We've got the volga boat song seppo and we've got the history and the laughs of that grey stone and we've got the notes G E A E. Fre o Heave ho. Remember that? So we can chant freo heave ho or freo dockers. It's up to you to lead the mcg cheer squad on a big friday night game. You will have planted the seed seppo. We will hear you from our lounge chairs and pubs. We'll love it. It will connect us to our roots. It will be original. It will be ours. Come on seppo you can do it.

Gret win, great effort - barlow is a midfield god.

Really want that high pick, but happy for the boys to keep giving it their all; given the way our injuries are mounting up, come round 23, Freo will be fielding office staff down back, the guys from catering across half forward, and those cut-out cardboard defenders from training rotating through the ruck... reckon a top five pick is going to take care of itself.

But by the same token, winning them gets us on a roll for next season. Going into a pre-season knowing that you ended the season well is a great motivator! Winning breeds winning. The way to see this year is a temporary hiccup in an other wise sound plan of list development that has been complicated by injuries. It would make for a longer summer I think if we go into it on the back of a string of loses.
