So it isn't just me? Phew. All my Essendon supporting friends think he is going to be a star, and while I hope he is a great player (and I think he should be reasonable, assuming his body doesn't hold him back) based on what I've seen of him so far I'm not as certain as they are. Of course I'll keep watching him and if he starts to remove my doubts all the better for Essendon (and our march towards victory, well hopefully).

Off topic, but it seems people are a bit rash in making calls on Houli either way (Not neccisarily you or Ant). We have been screaming for good midfielders, and Houli has shown enough to me to suggest he could be great. But it Very early days yet, and to really make any sort of call after 10-11 games is difficult. I think the positives far outweigh the negatives so far. Also harsh to think he is injury prone so early as well.

Not really. Anyone who knows about his junior footy knows about his history of various injures. It was one of the reasons why he did not go as early in the draft as a lot of people thought he might.

I know you said it wan't directed at Ant or I and that is fair, but I will just quickly explain my position (can't speak for anyone else). It's not that I am making a call on Houli this early, he has only played 14 (?) games and still has plenty of time, I simply am responding "couter point" to the original point that some people (a few of my friends especially) have judged him to be star material. They made the call, I am merely responding with what I think is a somewhat more balanced position.

You say Houli has shown enough to suggest he could be great, and once again I find my terminology difers from that of big footy. Joel Selwood showed he had the potential to be "great" early on, Houli has shown he can be an AFL player. As to how good he could be well that is what my query is all about, he has shown he can play in an AFL team but I don't think he has been that spectacular and still has a lot to learn.

Once again, I never said he can't become great I merely think that on what we have seen of him some people are a little too impressed. As to being injury prone, I didn't really mean to sound like I was making a career call there, it's just that he did have problems as a junior and he has had a few interruptions since coming to us so it on my radar, even if it is a minor concern ATM.

Watched a lot of Bachar's junior footy. (couple of games a year) and cant remember him playing a full season.
He has always had injury problems. However, to still show what he has, at the age he is, after all he has had to go through, shows me one tough bugger, and If he comes out the other side he will be a star and a very good bargain. Was not suprised to see him go so late in the draft for those reasons though.

Winderlich's improvement over the last 4 weeks is huge. He and Prismall are now jogging twice as fast as they were before Christmas. It's probably 60% of full speed, over 200m at a time.

First time i have been able to get to training today and he is looking ok. Ran a heap of 300's with Prismall and his recovery after each run looked to be a bit better than Prismalls. The where runing at about 75% so it was a decent workout as they completed over 10 shuttle runs. Certainly not showing any signs that he is struggling at the moment. He even did some kicking for about 15 minutes after the main group finished training.

That's excellent news - really want him to get fit and show the doubters what he is capable of.

Over what sort of distances is he kicking? Is he stretching out with his kicking?

Have you seen him doing any bending over and picking the ball up on the move?

He isn't kicking and to the best of my knowledge is only touching the ball in the rehab handball stuff.

I dont think he is actually competing for the spot that Jetta or Davey play but he is competing against the likes of Reimers, Houli and Myers. I would not select him in front of Reimers or Myers. I am not completly sold on Houli yet. So far he has only shown he can run in front of the ball and win a few possessions and he has not shown he can get through a season witout injury.
My point there was that he may become more of a forward pocket if he can;t get his endurance back - then he is competing with them. He wants to be a mid - but you have to be so fit these days - although it seems his ftiness is getting better from the comments abou his training.

I am sold on Houli - injuries pending - watching his decision making in traffic and foot skills already to date say he will make it - injuries pending. I had no idea he was so injury prone as a junior. Not a good sign.

Compare him with Watson yes but McVeigh and Welsh have two or three more years experience.
After 5 or 6 seasons - I don't think there is much of a differnece - 24-28 for me you can lump in the same category. They have had enough time and need to be delivering.

For a start i don't think i am pumping his tyres up. Its not like i am saying he is Judd or Hodge. The only reason i voiced my opinion originally was people where saying he only played one good game. If you look at his recored that is clearly not the case.
Of cousre he is not rated that highly outside of Essendon. The reason for that is
a) he is not a super star. He is a reasonably good player with pace
and
b)injury has prevented him from reaching his maximum potential.
My comment was not really directed at you - but rather a reflection of posts made over the past few seasons from various posters regarding him - and pumping him up as part of our salvation.

To me now, he is not part of the bigger plan - he is simply a bonus if he gets fit and can contribute in the seniors.

And I agree with Hocking - you can throw Atkinson in that mob as well. At least it shows that we are generating depth that we may start giving injured players the flick because we can't afford to keep em.

Thanks for the info Merv

I had a similar injury but no operation, and trying to come back to footy the biggest problems were kicking over any distance and picking the ball up below the knees.

Hope he overcomes these.

Merv i posted this morning that he was having some kicks for 15 minutes after the main group finished training ;):)
Nothing too long just some short 15 meter kicks of a couple of steps.

He has an advatage. They can pump in that much more rehab work than the normanl person gets. He basicly has acess to the physio's 24/7.

Winderlich was at Inverloch two weekends ago and was chating to one of my mates (Who no's Winder cause he comes down regulary and is looking at purchasing a house here) and he said everything is going to plan. He is just working through his rehap and expects to be training with the main group soon. He obvously is been cautious and expects a full recovery. Unless which is possible he is holding info off.
He thinks he will be ready to go by round 1 and said the back coming up really well.

I can't agree about his decision making through traffic. I think that needs work.

At times at the start of the year he was very rash with his disposal in those situations. However, at least part of that could be explained by a gameplan that was still very new to not only him, but everyone.

I love his skills and his run though.

Thats sounds a little optimistic. When is Round 1 by the way?

He was getting tackled vigorously at training this morning. He'll play some pre-season....probably not NAB Cup unless we go all the way through.
