Unbelievable start from Roach last night. Bangladesh didn't exactly cover themselves in glory but it was genuinely top quality new ball bowling. Somewhat ironically the bowler they were probably most worried about didn't take a wicket.

Not exactly a big scalp for the West Indies but if they win they climb a spot in the test rankings and hey, Bangladesh took a test off Australia.

Good to see the Windies quicks destroying the opposition again. That Bangladesh batting lineup has been underperforming for a while but has a fair bit of talent. A strong West Indies is good for cricket.

Would love for their pitches to get back to the fast bouncy pitches of the 80s and 90s rather than the lifeless ones of recent times.

I don't want to jump the gun but 3 of the 4 decks used in this Caribbean season have been 'green' and the fourth was still relatively lively.

It seems they finally may have woken up to the fact that:
A) Asian teams struggle big time against seam and bounce
B) their own batsmen handle it better
C) despite the absence of the once famous 'production line' of quicks, they DO still have numerous good physical specimens capable of doing a decent job
D) their own batsmen are awful against spin, and therefore have made dozens of rubbish spinners command spots in domestic sides at the expense of seamers

They production line of quicks might start to get longer if they keep producing wickets like this as well. Signs are good. Just need to get the crowds back as well.

Absolutely. It's still been VERY low key over there but I have noticed more fans at the last few games. I think we can more or less say this game is going to be a win. That gives them now at least one win in each of their last 7 series aside from the trip to NZ. That sort of regularity has been missing for a LONG time

Pitch looked excellent. Green and fast. Was doing a bit.

Before the coin toss the Bangers were uncertain whether they should bat or bowl. Well, they did both before lunch.

Their biggest hurdle in making their next leap from competitive hosts to competitive travellers (winning travellers is still a decade away) is developing their own fast bowling battery.

Big Shan goes down into the 20s for career bowling average.

Next step for him is to be able to get this movement he's been getting in the last 4 tests on slightly less receptive wickets. It's no coincidence that his best returns have all been against Asian teams. Pure pace can get scalps against them at times, with just the barest movement. Against Australia, NZ, SA and England who can all handle straight, fast bowling pretty well, he will need more tricks. Doesn't have to become an out and out swinger of it but needs to be able to do what Hazlewood does and extract some seam from less responsive decks.

Kemar Roach was bowling 135 km/h max, but yet the bangladeshi batsmen made him look like he was bowling at 150 k's. Not only does that show how inept the team is on faster pitches, it also shows that they have a long way to go to become the 3rd best asian nation in test matches. They really need this experience against a lower quality 'green pitch' team, before they move onto the bigger nations.

Even if it is against low ranked teams in foreign conditions, it is good to see the West Indies do well with the bat, but especially with the ball. Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel aren't even rated within the cricketing world but they are quite a good pair at the top of the order. Dowrich is scoring plenty of runs as a keeper which is a must have these days, and Jason Holder is getting better and better every match.

An opening bowling combination of Roach and Gabriel is nothing to sneeze at.

Roach doesn't have the searing pace of his younger years now, but he's still a very good bowler and happily, he's found form again since losing his way a bit around 2015-16. He has 163 wickets at 28ish in Test cricket.

Bravo coming back would be a big help too. Adding a world-class bat to that side would instantly make them a better side.

Add him to the nucleus of the side - Brathwaite, Dowrich, Holder, Gabriel and Roach - and suddenly you have a very, very decent core.

All of the above. Genuinely think cummins has a bit to work with too, and Joseph is just coming back from injury. Their A side was giving India A a touch up on first innings last night too before India hit back with the bat in their second dig.
Chase has hit a rough patch but can bounce back. If they can get Bravo back, and two of Ambris, Hetmeyer, Blackwood and Powell can become reliable, it makes things a LOT stronger.

What's also encouraging is that this current nucleus seems entirely dedicated to non-franchise cricket

Eh, I’m not sure whether that’s by choice. Other than maybe Holder, who would be a choice for a T20 league in the near future?

What do you think of Evin Lewis as a potential Test player PhatBoy ? Reckon he has what it takes or will he stay a white ball specialist?

Batting wise probably only Hetmeyer and Blackwood have the stroke range to be good T20 players admittedly but I'd have thought the bowlers have a bit going for them. Gabriel has an excellent Yorker and Roach is consistently hard to get away.

Lewis to me resembles a much better Devon smith, he has proper cricket shots albeit with a slightly unorthodox technique. He's said he'd consider playing test cricket but not sure how realistic it is.

Straight up pace doesn't seem to be hugely valuable in T20s - unless you're super accurate, the pace just makes you easier to hit - look at Tymal Mills in the last BBL for example. Roach played for the Heat IIRC and wouldn't be a bad pickup, but there's just so much talent available for most of the high profile leagues that there's a lot of competition for places.

Another step backwards for Bangladesh though it's great to see the Windies continue to do well after a good series against Sri Lanka.

Not a huge surprise though given the solid WI bowlers and Bangladesh's recent performances against fast bowling. I remember when Bangladesh were in South Africa a little while ago and the selectors considered performances in their first class competition as meaning more then performances in the Tests being played.
