Most of the early reviews of W10 were pretty positive. But it's hard to know whether that was just frustrated W8 users happy to get even the slightest reprieve.

They are running around a little bit headless at the moment Microsoft.

Buy a blank hard drive - Install Linux. Problem solved.

I don't know if it's fair to say they're headless. At the moment they're just trying to catch up, having spent the Ballmer years doubling down on what they'd always done, not noticing that the tech world was shifting. Now they've recognised that.

Windows 8 is better than W7. I don't know why people would chose W7 over W8 if they had the choice.

I'm getting W10 purely for DX12 at this stage. The next big jump is coming with Skylake and (hopefully) AMD's Fiji and Nvidia's Pascal microarchitectures. Just need PCIe SSDs to become affordable and then PC owners will be laughing within the next 2 years.

I'm approaching that stage.

Even after recent disasters, Microsoft just doesn't get it. A one-size-fits-all OS that runs on the power of a watch battery isn't what everyone wants.

My PC has grunt. I want to use it.

Give me eye candy, and efficiency be damned! I'll pay.

Don't give me a mobile OS masquerading as a desktop. I'll revolt.

NB For those who don't appreciate being bugged about upgrading to Windows 10 - KB3035583 is the update you need to uninstall (Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View installed updates).

For what most of us do, Win 10 is fine (sadly missed out on the version that would give free Win10 licence without upgrading from 7 or 8 by a few days).

My new build only has a pre-release 10 on it. No troubles with Windows yet other than having to update the driver for the graphics card. Upgrading from 8 or 8.1 is supposed to be fairly painless, but always back up anything. From 7, you really do need to back up as documents will be deleted.

LanceRomance we're still on XP at work. It will probably be another 2-3 years before Win7 is rolled out to all workstations.

Apps and documents will migrate from 7, it's only from Vista backwards that you'll lose data.

I've noticed a few guys around the office use Macs but I've never really liked them (since the late 90's at least).

Yeah I'm keen for it too. Only been on 8.1 a short time, but I like it a lot more than 7.

Absolutely nothing whatsoever.

Any "Mac is better for xyz" arguments are throw-backs to the 1990s which have somehow stuck, much like 'Only Carlton cheats' and 'Richmond finished 9th'.

Both systems are very stable.
Both have high levels of support.
Both are 64bit.
Both use essentially the same hardware.

The stability problems for Windows are more to do with trying to design an OS that will run on just about any piece of hardware produced. Going back a while, the quality of some hardware was shite and the universal standards for PnP etc were in their infancy.

TL;DR? The real differences between the two systems? Mac is more expensive. PCs are easier to upgrade yourself. Mac are relatively heaps better for virus issues. PC is the only choice for gaming.

You want a false sense of superiority and have cash to burn? Buy a Mac. Otherwise, just get the PC and ask a nerd mate to build it for you on the cheap.

If you want OSX just build a hackintosh. Cheaper, more customisable and you can multiboot if need be.

Windows can get stuffed. Last year it automatically downloaded windows 8.1 onto my laptop, it has stuffed up my computer. Get these stupid driver update errors coming up, the battery life has been killed (gone from 7 hours to 2 hours) and worst of all as soon as the update was done, my computer had a blank screen.

The tiled window interface is so dumb, my computer is not a tablet nor is it a touch screen FFS.

The computer is so slow now, it's been killed.
