Are Mac's having the same OS issues that Ipads, iphones etc are having, where it keeps freezing up for 30 seconds every few minutes?

I haven't done the latest IOS upgrade on my ipad because every time I upgrade, without fail, it crashes halfway through and I spend half a day restoring it.

Absolutely nothing whatsoever.

Any "Mac is better for xyz" arguments are throw-backs to the 1990s which have somehow stuck, much like 'Only Carlton cheats' and 'Richmond finished 9th'.

Both systems are very stable.
Both have high levels of support.
Both are 64bit.
Both use essentially the same hardware.

The stability problems for Windows are more to do with trying to design an OS that will run on just about any piece of hardware produced. Going back a while, the quality of some hardware was shite and the universal standards for PnP etc were in their infancy.

TL;DR? The real differences between the two systems? Mac is more expensive. PCs are easier to upgrade yourself. Mac are relatively heaps better for virus issues. PC is the only choice for gaming.

You want a false sense of superiority and have cash to burn? Buy a Mac. Otherwise, just get the PC and ask a nerd mate to build it for you on the cheap.
I know the differences in general. I was after the differences for developers. I know the mac terminal is much better than cmd as one example.

In addition, any Mac that has a hardware failure out of warranty is basically a throw away item thanks to their exorbitant parts prices.

Who uses cmd for programming?? I have done a little before but am not one by trade so I honestly don't know, but I thought the majority of programming would be done in programs.

I guess it is because all the gnu development tools run natively on mac hence you have a lot of free tools at your disposal.

EDIT: I am currently doing a software engineering degree and would never do any coding in windows despite being a windows user. I tried once and there is a lot of setup time getting all the tools ready for use. I always write my code in Linux which is obviously very similar to unix.

Writing code is only one part of the job. Lots of things are handy to do in a terminal. SSH and tail are two examples I recently discovered (having never before tried in Windows) that aren't natively supported in Windows but are in Linux.

Fair enough then. That doesn't really seem like enough to entice me though because...
I would always go Windows with Linux on Virtual Box. It does mean you need virus protection though.
Is exactly what I do already.

If I needed to do any program dev work I would definitely consider an apple machine, but like most people, I don't have that need.

I do on a daily basis, hence the question. I just haven't liked the design philosophy on any of the Apple products I've used (mostly iThings) which is why I was surprised to hear they're good for developers.

So it stalled on 'preparing for installation' so I restarted the laptop upon which a microsoft update stalled resulting in me forcing a hard reset. The installer then had me agree to terms and had me restart the computer. Once coming back from the restart the computer has carried on without bothering to upgrade to windows 10. Will see what happens from there.

Is it true MS has removed the ability to configure updates in W10? That your machine is going to be updated by MS whether you want the update or not?

I don't mind that too much (though I'd prefer it to stay as it is now), so long as they don't re-boot you automatically. I have stuff at works that runs 24/7 and it's a major pain in the arse to come in and find my machine has been switched off overnight.

May I ask what specifically makes them good for developers?

I've noticed a few guys around the office use Macs but I've never really liked them (since the late 90's at least).
Comes with the C compiler built in, as well as all the major scripting languages (Perl, Python, Ruby, etc), code repository software (git, svn). Just about everything you need to be an effective software developer, or even just a dabbler in code, is standard in the Mac.

Having worked in both environments, and Windows is a straight up pain whenever you do development (unless it's Microsoft specific stuff or one of the big software houses like Oracle).

My test laptop wont automatically push the update out, still says my copy is reserved so I downloaded the ISO. Tried to install 3 or 4 times and fails every time with the very help error message of "Windows 10 installation has failed."
