Comes with the C compiler built in, as well as all the major scripting languages (Perl, Python, Ruby, etc), code repository software (git, svn). Just about everything you need to be an effect software developer, or even just a dabbler in code, is standard in the Mac.

Having worked in both environments, and Windows is a straight up pain whenever you do development (unless it's Microsoft specific stuff or one of the big software houses like Oracle).
I didn't realise it came with so much stuff built in, but to be fair getting compilers or git or p4 or whatever isn't really a massive issue. And I've never argued (or seen) anyone argue for Windows over anything for development. I just wouldn't personally make the decision on an OS based on what easily obtainable features come preloaded.

It's not just that they are pre-loaded it is that they actually work. There seem to be a lot of issues to get around when using Windows, but like you said Linux on Virtual Box works anyway.

My test laptop wont automatically push the update out, still says my copy is reserved so I downloaded the ISO. Tried to install 3 or 4 times and fails every time with the very help error message of "Windows 10 installation has failed."
did you try deleting all files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

then open command as admin and go "wuauclt.exe /updatenow"

Yeah I tried that on my first attempt, no go. :(

Looking at this article 10 new features you'll love in Windows 10 leaves me asking why? Why would I want to upgrade from a stable platform that I'm comfortable with (Windows 7)?

Start is back - I've got Start in Windows 7. This is not a "new feature". Next!
Always-listening Cortana - I don't use Siri on my iPhone. Next.
Microsoft Edge - likely an improvement on IE. Possible tick.
Sign-in methods - fingerprint readers & retina scanners. None attached. Next.
Windows Phone integration - next
Multiple desktops - "create different desktops for multiple projects and purposes; you can easily switch between them and pick up where you left off each time". Might have some organisational value.
Windows Phone integration - mentioned twice so I'm sure it's good, but not relevant for me
Multitasking improved - "a quadrant layout in Windows 10 allows you to snap up to four apps on the same screen". I have 2 x 27-inch monitors to avoid the problem of screen real estate. Next.
New interactions - "You will be able to touch, type or write - use a writing pad, touch keyboard, or type the old-fashioned way". Keyboard is fine, thanks. Next.
Xbox integration - Next.
Cost - Free! Now we're talking. But a subscription model (aka The Devil) looms in 12 months' time. The days when people actually queued overnight for the privilege of forking out a couple of hunjie for new Windows versions are long gone.

I'm not a gamer so DirectX 12 doesn't interest me either. Factor in the unattractive "flat" look that Microsoft has become besotted by in recent times, the absence of Windows Media Player, the pain of learning a new OS and the uncertainty as to whether your hardware and apps will play nicely, and it's not terribly exciting.

Early days, but Windows 7 could be the next XP, with millions of users refusing to budge for a decade or more.

Will continue to read reviews and make a decision after six months or so, but I'm happy for others to be the guinea pigs.

What error code are you getting?

Had no problems with the download and installation, running smoothly at the moment. I'm not missing the 8.1 tile menu, and the appearance looks much nicer. Yet to fully test it out with phone integration but so far so good

You're lucky, currently my laptop has become quite cumbersome taking a long time to open programs.

Only issue I had was the graphics driver not installing. Took a couple of goes but all good now :thumbsu:

I believe that is only for a certain part. The main (original) game is still free. Also believe its been like that since windows 8.
