Windows 7

People are still bagging Vista? FFS, there's nothing wrong with it anymore. It is just as stable as XP with SP1. Bullshit sure does spread fast.
I have to agree totally, Vista (after a few SP's) was pretty stable......
HOWEVER, once you go seven you'll never know better (sorry, a little catchcry of mine;))

W7 so far has been brilliant for me as I have rolled it out onto all my PC's, that being my Main machine(one i'm on now:thumbsu:), my downloading PC (which is an ancient 3 mega..hurts baby) and my Media Centre which I was reluctant to upgrade due to the fact that I simply could not be without my home theatre so was a tad scared :( BUT, all is good in Kansas City Toto :D

It’s not necessarily that Vista is bad; it’s more because 7 is a handful of months away. Sounds like a very strange decision to me. The percentage of enterprises running Vista is going to be tiny.

Rod I downloaded the RC from the site http://windows7.com
After I clicked on download it asked me to log in with a "live" account so I used my ancient hotmail one and it gave me a product key.

Unfortunately I'm sick at home today so the key is sitting on my desk at work and seeing as I have the next 5 days off I won't be installing it any time soon.

Will do it at work on Wednesday and let you know how it goes.

I'm still going strong with release 7000 and didn't install too many programs on it.

1 thing I do want to know. When Windows 7 is officially released how will we upgrade it from 7100? It would be a pain to have to reinstall everything that has built up over 9 months.
Hey Borgsta, you can install it without a key. You have 30 days after installation before you have to enter the key. You lose no functionality without it.

And they have said that to use the RTM, you must do a clean install :thumbsd:

Two things;

1. I am not a tech-head or gamer;
2. Using a shitty HP business machine.

---------

Seems nice enough.

I love the taskbar pin, as I work through the internet, specifically IE as it is the only one with support. The tab display is therefore very useful.

It's generally just better organised, and my computer seems to be moving closer to Zen and is chipping away less (presumably part of the energy / memory saving changes).

Other than that though, it runs about as fast and reliably as Vista, at least on this machine. Maybe it gives you a bit more love with better processing speeds and RAM.

Still not even in the same postcode as OSX for reliability in terms of running applications. Will be interesting to see how powerful they can get Snow Leopard.

Win 7 is an improvement, but not by a huge amount IMO. I've never seen a quality product as unfairly slammed by so many people before as Vista!

pre or post SP1 Figjam?

Even post there was still an absolute ton of hardware issues that were just flat out dumb by MS. 1 thing it felt like MS forgot is that a computer isn't just the parts inside the tower / case. People had to buy new printers because they wouldnt work on Vista. Audio and video editing software had issues. It was a complete ballsup because they rushed it and kept adding "functionality" to it.

I was very lucky with Vista. Had a fairly good run with it and it only crashed once or twice but it started to slow right down towards the end. W7 loads at in at most 50% of the time.

Post. Fortunately during XP's reign, I got a Powerbook as a performance bonus.

I did have to use XP though early on, and it was utter shite. I still think it's shite!

Whilst the hardware compatibility issues should have been avoided, the end product after SP1 shouldn't have been slagged as much as it was. It ended up far superior to XP.

I did have to reload Vista early this year due to slowing, but this is not a Vista issue. Read the Cnet review on Win 7; he says he has already had issues with Wondows rot in 7!

OSX slows down over time too, but nothing approaching Windows issues.

I'm going to be a pain in the ass noob here, but haven't been following Windows 7 updates lately. I downloaded the first Beta of Windows 7, split my laptop hard drive in 2 and currently have both Vista and Windows 7 running on it. What's the best way to install the new version?

You can just run the install straight from the Vista desktop.

You should be able to upgrade directly from Vista, I did.
They have moved out of beta testing now and have released RC1 (Release Candidate) so get in there amongst it :thumbsu:
I also had the dual boot thing happening but bit the bullet a few weeks back and blew away my Vista install; totally W7 now on all my machines :p

Yep, those are my thoughts exactly. :thumbsu:

I don't know how Vista receives the bad raps that it does. I have been running it for about a year now and havn't had a single problem with it. Just as stable as XP and I like the interface better.

Yet to try windows 7.

Getting a new machine tomorrow and installing Windows 7 on it. Worthwhile?

I have Vista Ultimate still that I can install if anything goes wrong, but I don't really want to resort to it because Vista was a pain in the arse for me with my last computer. (SP1 never installed even after formatting, downloading every single update etc. )

installed the new one on the work PC. Have to say I cant see any real differences between it and the trial version I had.

1 thing I have just noticed is how detailed the firewall section is. No need to buy a firewall (or d/l) if you set up Win7 properly.

Yeah neither did I but I think the beta's were way ahead of sched in their development so I dare say the final product wont differ much from this RC version.

There still are a few small glitches but i'm sure that will be ironed out soon.

Yes, worthwhile. No brainer.

W7 is simple and fast to install. You might run into some driver issues depending on your hardware, but these should be easily fixed by either installing Vista drivers (if W7 drivers aren't available) or letting Windows Update fetch and install the right drivers for you.

Took 15 minutes to install and there's been no driver issues at all. Very smooth. :thumbsu:

Agree. I installed Build 7000 in Jan, then RC Build 7100 last month and didn't notice any difference, apart from the fact that 7000 was only valid until August while 7100 is now valid until March.

I read this to be that the user feedback from 7000 was so good that not many changes were required for 7100.

Bugger, really wanna chuck the RC on the laptop, as Vista is pissing me off, but can't get wireless internet at uni configured and IT can't help me :(
