Nice work with the avatar BP.

It was a GIF when I saved it but can't get the movement happening :(

No you had to buy Vista within the last 4-5 months

Yah. I googled it after making the post and discovered that. I thought ASUS might have a "free" upgrade option but my model wasn't included, I assume because I bought it last year.

Isn't the rule of thumb with MS products to wait at least 6 mnths before the glitches are ironed out or is W.7 past that rule?

Gaso

Microsoft did the right thing with this one and released a bunch of betas that have been pretty ruthlesly tested.

It is probably already at the '6 month' stage.

Plus they had a heap of people testing it that were waiting for it to fail (myself inc.) so to get past all that with no major hiccups was amazing really.

Win7 is ready to go out of the box.

install the 64 bit version as you only have one licence in a box and you cant go back and reinstall the 64 bit if youve installed the 32 bit the first time around.

the release candidate ive used is fine love it.

please buy a full version as a clean install is best. many people ive sold it to havnt made recovery discs from there old pcs yet:eek: or didnt get a full version of vista when they had there pc made up:thumbsdown:

upgrading to windows 7 without backups of previous windows = disater

What's the difference between the standard retail W7 and OEM versions? Is it just the packaging?

I'm thinking of picking up OEM W7 Pro 64 bit from MSY for $168.

Same, but...

* condition apply–OEM must purchase with system order

i.e. buy a computer. That's what the OEM version is for.

The dodgyer ones might allow a sale anyway, or make you buy a mouse or something.

Hmmm... i've been hearing of a lot of instances where the shop doesn't bother making you buy a whole computer.

As you said, I might be able to see if I can get it bundled with some RAM.

It's actually closer to 12 months. The first public betas were released towards the end of last year. I grabbed mine around Xmas - Build 7000 which was great. I have since installed 2 later builds, not because there was anything wrong with 7000, but just curious to see if any new features or functionality had been added. From what I can tell, the RTM version is fairly similar to 7000, and extremely similar (the same?) to 7100.

The upgrade version works the same as the full version if you have XP or Vista, does it not?

Yes, if you have the previous version installed.

Not really fussed anyway. Have both 32 bit/64bit OEM Windows 7 which i got for free from Uni.

Been using Windows 7 since the beta trials, must admit never thought Microsoft would actually listen to the people. They have done a great job with Win 7, kudos to them.

Only the Home edition too, OK for most people but **Power** users like me need something with more grunt.

I'm a power user, and I couldn't give a rat's about the features of the other versions. I could understand some people getting value out of XP mode, but that's about it...
