I am using Windows 3.1 at the moment, can I upgrade straight to Windows 8.1? And if so how many 3.5" diskettes do I need?

This is getting my knickers in a knot.

Just got this thing they call Windows 8 and when I click in the bottom left corner to bring up the Start Menu like every other Windows Ive ever used.. It takes me to a flippin colourful assortment of squares with applications and words I dont even know.

Apply all updates. Then Windows 8.1. Then all updates again. Then your Start Menu should be more familiar.

If you are not sure how to apply all updates and Windows 8.1, find someone who can show you.
 
After a day of ****ing around with UEFI I managed to get Fedora 20 dual booted with Windows 8 on two work laptops. stick that up your ****ing pipe microsoft campaigners.

Mine didn't. I've had 8 for over 6 months and have just ignored the pop up message to go to 8.1 for free everytime I restart. Yesterday I decided why not get it and then wondered WTF was it taking so long. Google tells me 3.5 gig just for an update, unbelievable.

Turn off all update messages with these steps.
Go to Control Panel
Change View by to Large Icons
Find Windows Update
Click it and click Change Settings
Then change to preferred choice.

So Ive had an interesting time trying to download proof my parents Windows 8...They decided to buy a computer without me there, which means they now have an OS they dont understand and shouldnt really have. It took them long enough to get their heads around 7, and I ddnt let them get anywhere near vista.

Anyway, they live on wireless broadband through Telstra and have 15GB to use in a month. This past month they used 14GB of that in 3 days. Now, my parents use the internet for Facebook stalking me mostly, emailing old friends and dad enjoys watching people do stupid things on Youtube. None of these things should use that much DL. I also have Windows Update disabled.

What I found was that despite them not using the Tile format and having a start button/desktop setup the Tiles apps were still updating themselves, every time they sat on the internet. So all the new News, Weather, Sports, Stockmarket so on and so forth checked online and downloaded all the new information available to them. I went through and disabled litterally every single tile I could. So far their usage has gone down to about 10-50meg a day, depending on dads Youtube use.

So, if anyone is having the issue of Windows 8 chewing data despite updates being off, it would pay to check the tile apps as well.
 
If they are on wireless don't bother getting 8.1. After using a heap of extra credits just to d/l the thing I go to use it and couldn't connect online, turns out the modem I have works for 8 but not 8.1, an online search shows this is a common problem. So I've spent about an extra $70 in d/l and a modem for something that is barely any different to what I already had. Well done M$.

Upgrade your modem.
I'm wireless and my current modem works fine.
A good one to go with is boblite.
Also check with your ISP if they were having any maintence issues at the time when you tried to use the modem for the first time.
Sure you might come up with some problems but the best thing to do is to troubleshoot them by giving your ISP a call to help you nut out the faults you might be having.
The other thing is I wouldn't go blaming microsoft for your problems with your modem. It could be just a faulty modem.
If you have had your modem for 2 years look at changing it before it gives you connection issues.
Then you will be happy knowing you have done the right thing by your computer and yourself by getting a new modem so when you upgrade you will be ok.

I don’t like the Look of Windows 8. Don’t like the APP Look it has.

I am more then happy with Windows 7

You had me going there for a moment. I was going to suggest that you may want to upgrade the 386SX. ;)

I have just bought a new system with 8.1 and it was a bit of a pig at first but after a week of using it I am quite impressed. The only thing is that you are forced to open a Microsoft account if you want even the most basic apps.

I also had difficulty getting an OEM copy of MS Office 2013. Apparently Microsoft are trying to force users to buy an annual licence. I am tempted to go to Office Works and get Office2013 while I still can.
 
i installed win 8 back in beta in 2012 on my son's old hand me down laptop was (running vista). never had an install run so smooth and never a problem with it. revived a laptop ready for the bin. he got the hang of it right away and since then chose a windows tablet over an ipad - very happy with it. Just ignore the metro interface and use it in desktop mode if on a laptop. and if missing the start button why would anyone buy a mac? Very good o/s just not much of an improvement in interface for laptop/pc users over win 7 - but it wasn't designed to be - it's the pathway towards perfect synchronicity between different digital devices (obviously not there yet). And much more stable and less hassle with network and file management than my macair - which sits relatively unused next to my far nicer dell 13' ultrabook.
 
I've grown to love Windows 8.
 
New copy still sitting on the shelf after being uninstalled in favour of Windows 7. If Windows 9 is no good, will look at getting a Mac.
 
Have a small laptop with Windows 7 and have a Tablet with Windows 8 on it and must say i would rather use a Windows 7 than 8.
