Analysis Wing Attendance Megathread 2023

Really?

The "just because we're not top 2 doesn't rule us out from winning a premiership" episode?

Thought it was incoherent nonsense

Just because I don't necessarily agree with everything they say doesn't mean I can't appreciate the sentiments.

I thought their proposed team changes were very well considered and argued.

Strong form all round.

I heard Mike Whiting on the podcast talk about how much time Bailey spent on the wing, which wasn't my recollection so I'm glad I wasn't imagining things.
I guess there's the distinction to be made of where they line up and centre bounces and where they settle in general play.

ZoBlits may not have had enough spare time this week to watch a replay to get his figures up.
I watched the replay and believe these three players were our main wingers last week.

Fletcher.....: 68 % TOG, 12 Disposals @ 83%, 4 Marks, 3 Tackles, 0 G-0 B. No CBA's.
Berry.........: 73% TOG, 19 Disposals @ 63%, 8 Marks, 3 Tackles, 1 G-1 B. No CBA's.
McCluggage: 86 % TOG, 20 Disposals @ 65%, 5 Marks, 5 Tackles, 0 G-1 B. Some midfield time as he had 7 CBA's.

Kayo working well again, only four tagged goals in the replay and they were all in the pre-game coverage. Boy, I hope someone got fired for that blunder...

Couple of interesting things to note - we had 2 players take easily the most rotations. I like this as gives continuity to a specialist position.

And McCluggage became a pure on-baller and played his best game of the year. Perhaps he is an on-baller was just out of form? Has been steadily getting better. Albeit Richmond’s midfield was pretty weak on the weekend. Which is so strange because according to their forum we were just another team playing their ‘grand final’ against them and the fact they won a flag on the gabba 3 years ago means they own the ground. Or something.

Could be... I went to the pre season game against the Cats at Springfield and McCluggage was exceptional inside that day.

To be fair i definitely joined the "MCCLUGGAGE TO THE WING" club but i am reconsidering my membership!

He’s not getting 34 touches playing wing

I have preferred McCluggage on the wing even though he is a very good outside/inside midfielder.
Mostly for team balance more than anything else. McCluggage, Berry + other midfielders wing relief. Thats all we had.

But the arrival of Fletcher has changed the situation.
Not so much that Fletcher is playing wing but the fact that he has slotted into the role so well to date.
For a young player he has a good balance of defense & forward play. He is also playing well to hold his spot.

Bailey is playing more midfield time and developing well lately.
Rayner less midfield time and Ashcroft may settle around the 50% CBA's as he settles into the position.
I see our midfield in order of CBA's going forward. Neale, Dunkley, McCluggage, Ashcroft & Bailey.
Thats a good balance of inside & outside midfielders.
See Zorko filling in the Bailey forward position with some stints elsewhere.

I’m just glad they’ve been rather flexible with him this year since he obviously has great strengths in both positions. Not afraid to put him on the outside nor afraid to put him inside based on what the game needs.

The only problem I have with that is the size of them. Only one big mid in that group and I reckon that against the best teams the best teams that could be exposed. I'd just love to get at least one other big body in there on the regular.

The game has changed a little and the ability to be able to break the lines and spread has become more or as important as size imo.

At present we are the number 1 ranked clearance team in the competition. (1) Lions with 657, (5) Port 577, (8) Demons 554, (12) Pies 536
Center clearances the same but a much closer contest. (1) Lions with 206, (2) Port 195, (9) Demons 181, (13) Pies 178
These figures show that the Pies play a different type of game even though they have a good midfield.
Nic Dacos, Tom Mitchell, Pendlebury, Crisp, De Goey, and a few others chipping in

Our secret weapon could be releasing Rayner in CBA during finals.
He'll be one strong unit who is hard to tackle.

The sun made it fun this week.

Darcy Wilmot plays so well either on the wing or back, personally I prefer him back, where do our Big Footy experts see him being used to best advantage re our flag chances for the rest of 2023?

Half back flanker for mine. He is better breaking the lines of congestion and keeping the ball in front of him. Surprisingly good at winning 1 on 1s

Will get lost on the wing on occasion and would prefer Jaspa and berry on the wings in finals

I reckon Fagan is thinking through how to get Rich into the side and that will require Wilmot to move out of defence.

I like Wilmot in either role but I really like the movement we've had across half back with him and McKenna. I don't think that athletic point of difference is as apparent or difference-making when he plays wing.

I also really like the idea of having Dev and Bez as our grand final wingers. I think having two hard nuts on the wing could be a point of difference.
