Review Winners and Losers in the Draft

Melbourne have done very very well. Petracca, Brayshaw, Stretch and ANB all ready to go from round 1. McDonald will replace Frawley in time.

Im very happy at the Saints. McCartin sets up our forwardline post Riewoldt. Goddard was talked about as the #1 pick (along with Lever and Wright) 12 months ago so that's a massive steal.

McKenzie said he was intervied by every club so he must be rated and can play anywhere with that elite disposal.

Lonie another ball winning forward who can push up the ground. Add him to Billings, Templeton and the likes of Membrey and Murdoch and we have a dangerous rotation.

Below that -

Geelong and the Dogs got very nice hauls with their picks.

Essendon would be stoked with Langford and Laverde. Talk about setting up a midfield!

Only real question mark was Carlton taking Boekhorst at #19. Surely wouldve been there at #28??

Also not sure on Richmond grabbing Reece McKenzie. Probably good value that late but is behind Vickery, Hampson, Griffiths and McBean for that Ruck/Forward spot.

Would play him over Vickery and Hampson any day of the week.

Roos says thanks for the 1.5 million while you finish 2nd last.
You're right. Neeld would have coached us to 17th this year.

In answer to your question, Frawley played forward all year and will be replaced by the vastly superior Hogan, whilst our KPD stocks have been bolstered with the addition of Frost and McDonald.

North: It's not that I don't rate their 3 guys, but I just wonder if it helps them win a flag any time soon taking 2 key defenders then a third tall defender or defensive midfielder type.

I think the club probably planned for Garlett, Cockatoo or Weller. Freo threw a spanner in the works there, most thought Weller would last.

The club loved McKenzie, but Durdin at 16 was too good to refuse, from then on tbh, most of the best outside run was gone, we need KPD with the likes of Grima, Firrito getting on and having a lot of bad injuries amongst our developing young talls.

Next years key talls are pretty cruddy tbh, I dont mind the picks tbh.

Thrilled that we took a chance on Caleb Daniel, and very happy with McLean, too.

I'm not as sure about Webb, Hamilton and Dale, but I'll wait and see. We've done well to add depth in a few areas over the course of the trade/draft period, after losing plenty.

Melbourne absolutely cleaned up, though. With a bit of luck along the way, they've done extraordinarily well of late.

Richmond's strategy seems sound, but I have no idea if any of these kids can play. Thoughts:

1) Good to see them take 5 teenagers after taking just 1 last year
2) They have attempted to address the lack of pace problem
3) Not sure if we need another ruck/forward, but McKenzie was supposedly a massive slider so I'm OK with that.

Uninspired overall with Hawthorn's draft picks but underestimate Wrighty at your peril, it will be interesting to see how they end up developing in the best team for it. :thumbsu:
Wright hasn't done a lot wrong in the past. Every year we don't take the expected player, or whoever the armchair specialist at home recommends. We keep striking gold. Howe is a beauty at Pittonet has great size already unlike the usual 85kg ruckman who takes 5 years to develop. Don't know much about Miles but plenty to be excited about when we've already traded in Frawley and O'Rouke. Whitecross and Anderson effectively new players too.

Imagine... You could have ended up with pick 1 and 2. Wait... You've already done that...

Find it puzzling saints went for a key forward. In the leadup we were told how good lee, white and Bruce would be, with petracca being a once in a generation player too

Depends on how you rate Silvagni (who's a journeyman), Tanner Smith (who was dropped back to the rookie list) and Alex Pearce isn't it? Because no doubt you need a McPharlin replacement and some cover for Dawson and Johnson.

I like Apeness and Taberner as much as any key forward available to you so no concerns there. But the key defender has to be a question mark.

Any tall you took now probably wont be ready whilst Sandi, Pav, Mundy etc are still at their peaks anyway so it's probably foolish to say oh well you should've taken a key defender at pick whatever.

We also have Vandeleuer developing nicely on the rookie list and Suttcliffe proved very adequate this year doing a job on Darling and Goodes to name a couple. Then there's Ibbotson who, as much as we don't want to have to rely on him to go tall can pinch hit.

Its not as bigger issue as everyone is making out. An early call but Pearce looks REALLY good but the jury is out on Smith I agree.

You're right about who we took today not being ready in time for the Pav, McPharlin etc but the guys that we already have will be and who knows, we might jag a free agent next year (we're due) .

If you saw our 2014 games it was blatantly obvious that we need midfield speed, skill and smarts. And NOW!

I think Blakely will play in 2015 and in the right position so too may Weller and Langdon. Deluca will need opportunities i.e. injuries etc but could do a job if needed in 2015. The window is still ajar IMO.

Would appear that we've had 1 & 2 again this year... Good luck

Absolutely... Good luck

I think we've got jack watts.. Except this time he will learn from an AA forward.

For mine the winner is St Kilda - McCartin was the right choice and with Goddard they get bookends to go with the fleet of quality mids they took last year which they also added to with McKenzie and Lonie will be great as the small forward.

The other team that did really well I think was the Bulldogs - Caleb Daniel and Declan Hamilton were on my wishlist for the Hawks along with Lonie.

Have you got a link to the 2009 one?

I reckon it takes about 5 years to see who really won/lost

That sounds about right.

No I don't but I still have vivid memories of 2008 and the disaster that was Hill over Rich and Ballantyne at 21 from a Freo perspective. Even Fyfe caused a bit of head scratching the following year.

It's probably easy for me to say that though because I never really immerse myself in the draft enough to get too disappointed in who we draft, most players have pretty sweet highlights vids.

I usually consider the team that had the most top 20 picks to be the winner on the day and that's the typical pleb opinion.

Surely the dons have done well with Langford and Laverde?

Thought Laverde was a top 8 pick a week or so ago? I gave up hope of getting any of my boys in Degoey, Laverde and Cockatoo. I wanted the dons to get 2 of them. Degoey and Cockatoo i had as my first 2 preferred but think Laverde could be anything.

The Dees draft really stood out to me. Petracca, Brayshaw, Stretch, ANB and McDonald.

I also loved the Saints' drafting. We have done some quality rebuilding

Yes they sure did do well.
