He was captain so he had to have known in some capacity what was going on. I don’t have a problem with a penalty just initially I felt 1 year was too long for the level of “crime”. Having said that, Smith scoring runs in the way he has since coming back, has been absolutely all class. So - why are the Poms still calling Smith a cheat?
Surely the worst he did was not actively discover and prevent a teammate breaking the rules, but he's also not ******* Scooby Doo. Maybe he just didn't pay any attention to Davey Warner, which frankly sounds quite sensible.
Yeah you just gotta laugh at Steve Harmison saying smith will only ever be remembered as a cheat. So - why are the Poms still calling Smith a cheat?

Considering their captains have actively cheated over the years. You won't find bigger hypocrites than England sport supportersSo - why are the Poms still calling Smith a cheat?

Harmison who was part of the mint brigade? As I said hypocritesYeah you just gotta laugh at Steve Harmison saying smith will only ever be remembered as a cheat.
No Harmy, he will be remembered as a once in a generation, prolific and unique batsmen who almost singlehandedly destroyed your pissweak countrymen.
You on the other hand will always be remembered as bowling the widest wide ever bowled in test cricket.....

by the same token, if you take Stokes out of the series we probably win 5 nilAmazing result from the Aussies.
I will say though - take Smith out of the series and we probably lose 3-1. He's that much of a difference.

Nope. Nowhere near the same impact. Stokes was good, but Smith scored nearly half of Australia's runs in the tests he played.by the same token, if you take Stokes out of the series we probably win 5 nil
So how wide was it I wondered......

Smith didn't play the 3rd test, and the only way England won was a Ben Stokes miracle. If it wasn't for his century in the second test we may well have won that one. If he could have bowled this test it may well have been a draw. He is a very, very good player.Nope. Nowhere near the same impact. Stokes was good, but Smith scored nearly half of Australia's runs in the tests he played.
England don't win the last test if Stokes doesn't play.Nope. Nowhere near the same impact. Stokes was good, but Smith scored nearly half of Australia's runs in the tests he played.
Captained alright yesterday.Seems Paine is a very good leader given what happened 1 year ago but he sure is a s**t captain.....AFAIK, he also did captain Tasmania in the Shields but not very well?
Setting defense field in the middle session when Butler and Bairstow were never going to chase the runs....OMG, they actually did end up edging a few behind the wicket through the gap as we only had 2-3 slips. But credit to Paine for finally bringing in a RH Leg Spin to a LH batter to pitch it into the rough after a hour later of continually bowled an injured Lyon with Leech continue to leave the ball leaving him and blocking the straight one.....OMG and who told the fast bowlers to continue to ball bouncers at Overton and Leech for nearly 1 hour....OMG, then when Hazelwood decide to attack the stumps he get Overton with a LBW.Captained alright yesterday.
Wouldn't have had much to chase if Smith doesn't play - in any of the tests.England don't win the last test if Stokes doesn't play.
Plus, not to sugarcoat it, but Harmison and England cheated that entire series by using mints to get artificial shine on the ball.Yeah you just gotta laugh at Steve Harmison saying smith will only ever be remembered as a cheat.

Also if Smith played the 2nd innings at lords he would have been in the slip postion warner was in when he dropped Stokes on 9....Smith didn't play the 3rd test, and the only way England won was a Ben Stokes miracle. If it wasn't for his century in the second test we may well have won that one. If he could have bowled this test it may well have been a draw. He is a very, very good player.
