Bradbury wins gold

AAP
17feb02

SPEED skater Steven Bradbury won the first gold medal in Australia's Winter Olympics history with victory in the 1000m short track final.

All of the other four skaters in the final fell on the final bend, leaving Bradbury to cross the finish line in first place in a time of one minute 29.109 seconds.

Bradbury was last of the five skaters by some distance going into the final corner when hot favourite Apolo Anton Ohno of the United States, who was leading, fell in a tangle.

The fall brought down the other three runners.

In one of the most bizarre races in Olympic history, Bradbury crossed the line astonished but delighted as Ohno, lying on the ice, desperately tried to get his skate across the line first.

The American slid across to claim the silver in 1min 30.160sec while Mathieu Turcotte of Canada, also scrambling off the ice, took bronze in 1min30.563sec.

Ahn Hyun-Soo of South Korea was fourth in 1min 32.519sec while the only other finalist, China's Li Jiajun, was disqualified.

Well done Steve, who now has 2 of our 3 Winter Olympic medals. Whilst he had some luck, as there were also falls & disqualifications in the semi-final & quarter-final, he probably used his experience to avoid all the spills & stay out of trouble.

You might as well be Osama Bin Laden if you're not an American for all they care.

onya Steve... i don;t think he was lucky at all...well yeah he was...but thats not why he won! he was the only one hwo stayed on his feet the whole way through...and good on him! we woulda ben proud even if ya came last in that final...jsut as long as ya stay on ya feet!

Ahhh...winning the Australian way:D
Good on him. Bout time we won a gold. Looking forward to 'The Ice Dream' tonight:) .

Well done Steven. Just when we thought our medal hopes went with Jacqui's knee, Bradbury wins gold. We still have the aerial skiers in the final, and Zali Stegall to come. Who knows...? :)

this is time for Joffas famous 'PURE THUCKEN GOLD' statement.

In typical Aussie fashion we won thru arsey luck...and in typical aussie fashion "we'll take it" :D

just saw the sports report and no doubt, thats the funniest way to win the gold.... what a fluke, but hey, its gold to Australia so its all good ;)

What a win by Steven Bradbury.

How funny was it when Ohno went OH NO falling over then trying to get up and falling over again :p

He deserved to win, some say it was luck, but he skated well not to fall over, the others were stupid enough to do so he won well.

GO AUSSIES.

Saw it on CH7 tonight. Brilliant stuff. :D He said it was his 'tactic' to stay at the back and hope that 2 of them would fall so he would get bronze! haha!

I did feel sorry for Ohno. He should have won it, if not for the Chinese guy. :( He did extremely well to get up and get the silver, considering he sliced his thigh open with his skate. Owwwww :( Poor guy. That's guts for you. Let's hope he goes on to win in his other 3 races :)

OH NO (What a great mame :D) was definitely the best skater on the ice but he was a bit too aggressive, personally I would've disqualified both of them! The Korean was the unlucky one I thought.
