My wisdom teeth have not come through yet, i still have a few baby teeth in which my adult teeth have not broken through. When i was 16 my dentist pulled out a few of my baby teeth so that the adult teeth could grow through, but left the others as he's not entirely sure that the others would in fact grow.

My 22 year old brother still has a few baby teeth.
They cause him massive amounts of trouble.

Mine are fine, there were a few that were pulled out years ago (Canine - pointy ones), as well as Molars at the back. The adult teeth of those arn't as good as the baby ones were (not as thick - about as thin as front teeth), my molar teeth grew up like Canine teeth (instead of being round, they are more a pointy/triangular shape).

I have strong bones (drink too much milk), my teeth were relatively easy to get out at first, when they fell out naturally. The last Canine tooth that fell out on its own back in primary school, had a funny situation as it had been loose for quite some time..... but what got it out was the elbow from one of my team mates when we were celebrating a goal in our grand final at footy :D.

A few years after that, my parents were more concerned than i was over the fact that a number of my baby teeth remained - had to get them yanked out (two were easy, another two weren't so easy and the dentist took ages to pull them out, one required to be drilled).

i had a bummed tooth extracted today its far back in my mouth so its unnoticeable
- no way to save it :( they tried root canal etc

my tongue is now curious on the gap in my teeth left by the void of that dearly departed tooth, but i guess its better than constantly sucking on a rotting taste i had in my mouth

How much does it cost to get them out?
i have to get 4 out next week, one of them has already penetrated through the gum. one is growing horizontally and the other 2 the dentist said may as well just come out with the 2 that need to come out ..

I had a lot of dental work done as a teen, braces etc. So my wisdoms grew directly into the sides of my other teeth. I had to have mine pulled out sideways, so I got the full general anasthetic. The way they discribed it they had to dislocate my jaw to get them out.

I had next to no pain. The worst part was the taste of rotten meat I had with the massive wounds in my mouth, and the GA knocked me around a bit for a couple of day, drowsy etc. But the pain was nothing compared to when I first had my braces put on. My sister on the other hand, relatively no problem, just sat in the chair with a local and was in agony for days. I think it's just luck of the draw.

it cost 70 bucks to get that bummed tooth out

i got 65% of the cost back on private health insurance...

Had all four out at once, did get knocked out to get it done though no chair job and I was fine, was eating ravioli that night and eating solids a few days later, my main problem was after two days got sick of not brushing my teeth so did the fronts slipped and bumped the back gum so that bled a bit other than that I was fine.

Admittedly its far from the worst medical thing I have been through in my life though so I have a high pain tolerance.

Got one comming in at right angles, have to have all 4 out in "dental surgury" bloody $2,000 and my major dental doens't kick in for another few months so i'll have to wait.

My advice if you can don't get it done in the chair go to hospital and get knocked out and get it done.

Had one out already, as it was decay against my molar. Got the other 3 coming out next month via surgery.

The first one was done in the dentist with the local. Massive ache and headaches for a week or so. Great way to stop eating, though. Oh, and got it done 2 days before Christmas, so didn't really have the best time over Christmas and New Year. :P

Got an Xray this morning. It says bilateral lower eight molar teeth are impacted, medially and horizontally deviated. Does not sound good. On the Xray it shows my 2 wisdom teeth on the bottom horizontal and pushing against the other teeth.

And after reading this thread, absolutely shitting myself! :(

Its funny about this today.
I'm very lucky with mine as I've said already their all in the right spots and are not pushing on any other teeth.
The only thing is I've cracked them a while ago and get a little pain once every 6 months or so, easy to handle and a few pain-killers I forget about it. But today one feels like its cut the gum.

radiologists don't usually comment too much about OPG xrays. your "lower 8s" are your wisdom teeth (i.e 8th teeth from front and centre on each side)- it doesn't mean 8 teeth.

they use words like "horizontally deviated" to sound good. basically they're growing forwards instead of upwards which is ultra common. usually bread and butter for an oral surgeon. get knocked out in hospital for it and you'll be none the wiser - don't work yourself up over it!

how much easier is the procedure if the tooth is about half way erupted? My top two are almost through, but my bottom ones aren't.

Got a bit of pain in the bottom left one, looking at it before there is like a 'cut' on the top of it, and i can see down on to the tooth...I think I can see a little bit of black!

possibly a little easier but will cost the same if you see an pral surgeon. difficulty depends on the shape of the roots, angle of tooth, vicinity of the nerve and your age. (the older we get, the more the bone hardens up and makes removing them a little tougher).

the little bit of black is probably not decay. would need an xray to confirm all those answers though!

Well I think I'm getting another wisdom tooth right now I've had 4 ripped out and yet, I have one coming through behind my last back tooth on the bottom and another one is coming through at the top right at the back!! FFS I've had enough!!!! and to top it off it hurts like hell and its my birthday today!!!! Yeah thanks god for yet another wisdom tooth I appreciate it.........NOT!

edit in total I've had 7 wisdom teeth I've had 5 ripped out and 2 are currently in my mouth I'm serious!!! My twin sister was born with only 2 wisdom teeth Looks like I stole hers...

I've had 5 pulled (********ing annoying things they are) and each time it has been different . It takes around 3 to 4 days til you stop feeling any pain ( well thats for normal people) It only takes me around a day or 2. Just make sure you wash your mouth out with plenty of salt water everytime you eat or smoke ( Not for the first 24 hours though) otherwise you will get a dry Socket they are ********ing painful:mad: and worse than any toothache.

totally agree with getting a dry socket being far worse than any tooth ache ( in my experience anyway)

Why is it so damn expensive 2 see a dentist in this country? how many people put off or totally avoid getting dental work done because they simply cant afford it
Surely dental surgery should be covered by medicare.....or at least part of it

in all experiences.

dentistry is a very expensive trade costwise. and a highly stressful, difficult trade at that.

probably lots. but they are probably the same people that spend $1000 a yr on cigarettes and $2000 on beer... but whinge about $300 on their health at the dentist. not directed at you personally, but this is a common theme.

Surely dental surgery should be covered by medicare.....or at least part of it

would be nothing short of disaster unless done correctly. it could lead to a mass decrease the quality of dentistry. and a mass increase in the medicare levy. it would be very difficult to implement it fairly and efficiently to actually have a positive affect on the oral health of australia.

Had 2 out last Tuesday and having the last 2 out Thursday. All out in the chair under local. Wish I could be sedated.

Last week had one pulled out that had totally crumbled away and was severely painful for the 3 months i had to wait to get them out. The other was yanked out in just 10 minutes. hopefully the next 2 are that easy.

I had mine removed some years ago under full sedation...hurt like buggery, mouth felt all weird for a while after it.

This thread has reminded me to go see a dentist which I haven't done in years.

Well I got all worked up for nothing.

The operation went very well. I remember trying to stay awake as long as open with my eyes wide open and the next thing I know I'm awake in another room.

My cheeks aren't that swollen and I haven't been in that any pain (yet). Just a bit of discomfort with a bit or blood and saliva in the mouth. Also quite hungry as I can't eat any solids any time soon.

So to those of you who are worried about getting them out. Do not stress out! This coming from a person with a dental phobia. :thumbsu:
