Since there are going to be no spectators allow to watch AFL, maybe the AFL can play games at Suburban Grounds. One's that are up to AFL standard of course.

Carlton can play at Princess Park.
Bring the Pies back to Victoria Park.
Let the Hawks play again at Waverly Park.

It will look so much better than playing at an empty MCG or Marvel. It will actually give home teams an advantage. And to us spectators at home, it will give us something to look forward to.

Plus it would probably save the AFL and Clubs Money.
Not a bad idea, and Collingwood, Richmond, Hawks and Essendon should play away games at Geelong. The argument that playing at Geelong will disenfranchise supporters of these clubs is no longer relevant

Bu the argument that it's a shithole remains undisputable.

Why not? Well let's see...

TV.
Where do you put the cameras to have quality TV coverage at half these places? Given that TV will be even more important, that's a major issue.

Broadcasting is not setup at many of the grounds anymore

And I doubt many teams have much experience playing matches at their own home grounds these days.

I agree crowd control is the major issue with this, but broadcasting is hardly an issue. Marsh series games, state league games and AFLW games all get shown on TV and heard on radio from very small grounds including regional venues. They could definitely accommodate broadcasters in any suburban ground in Melbourne.

Most regular season games have more cameras, better angles and probably better quality than the games you mention.

If you've seen the cables from the OB van to the cameras, you understand why they tend to all be on one side, and even one section of the ground (for example). You also don't usually have places to put cameras high up at suburban venues.

Yes, all this can be overcome, but that requires more money/resources to set it up, every game. The big/regular venues pretty much have this stuff in place as standard.

Those cords/cables from the OB van are an issue when you have 20k + fans to you need to worry about, but with no fans they could have the entire outer covered in cords/cabling/scaffolding and not have to worry about fans interfering with them

Suburban footy never went away. Find out who your local club is and financially support them at this time as much as you possibly can. They are going to need it.

I don't think people realise just how tiny grounds like vic park and windy hill are.
It would be farcical watching players repeatedly dob goals from well inside the centre square. And glenferrie...fmd you could almost drill them from half back!

If games actually get played with no crowd and don't just get cancelled, TV audience is going to be the only way for the league to recoup any money. The TV spectacle will arguably be the most important thing. In that case they won't go to suburban grounds with sub-par lighting for TV. Everyone hates watching night games at Princes Park for that reason. Every other suburban ground would have the same problem, and probably worse.

Watch the league come up with a t20 version of footy. Short games played ever 4 days using the full 44 players on the list in rotation. Footy 7 days a week, can experiment with all the fantasy rules that they would like to employ. Hell it was so successful there will be no need for 4 x 25min+ plus games ever again.
The Chinese will love it, after all they created it.

I agree it's less of an issue, but these things still require additional work, etc.

Even if it's just staff, OH&S still applies.

Yep. If we can play on suburban grounds like punt road and windy hill, there’s no reason why clubs wouldn’t want to play on Geelongs suburban ground as well.

As soon as Gill realises he will have no excuse but to give Geelong a home final he will cure the coronavirus himself.
