I straight out have never heard of 'manual' or 'auto' licences.

Is there somewhere on your licence that says whether or not one holds a manual or auto licence?

Yeah, it says it right on the front. Mine did anyway. That was 10 years ago though.

The laws vary from state to state I think. In WA if you hold a car auto license it's listed as C-A, to remove the "A" restriction you need to pass another practical driving test in a manual vehicle.

It's only for P platers (which is a whopping 4 years now in Victoria). If you pass the test in an auto it's endorsed 'automatic only' but then when you get a full licence it's gone. I have absolutely no idea why it gets removed.

Not that it mattered for me as I had manual anyway.

Ah ok -

I still got a SA licence, and I passed my driving test in a manual. It says 'Class C' on my card. I guess I just never realised that it actually made a difference.

Yeah, it does seem weird. I'm not sure. I can drive both but only have auto cars at the moment.
If these people attempt to do it, I'm sure it would be like that episode of Top Gear where Richard Hammond drove the Renault R25 (F1 car) and had 8 anti-stalls when attempting to take off.

'I can see the merit in that 5 year rule. I got my licence in an auto though there was no restriction on my licence as to what type of transmission I could drive. About two and a half years later I put an offer on a manual car. The day before picking it up I got in a mates car. Spent about 5 minutes in the backstreets of an industrial area before going on a 2 hour drive. Drove my car home the next day and never looked back.

The adjustment really did happen that fast. I guess there is alot less information to process when you have become more accustomed to driving a car compared to someone fresh on their P' plates.

Whilst I don't see a point in driving a manual car, particularly if you drive in peak hour every day, I also question today's generation of men who are so soft they only get an auto license. Gen Y men dress like women and drive like women. I have grave concerns for the future.
