Did the umpires fail a duty of care when Jones went down?

We called for the stretcher but that last play of the quarter happened regardless. Not only did it leave us 1 short in order to set up our defence and release but if the pinged ball forward and the play is charging towards Jones on the boundary, it had potential to be nasty.

Anyway, probably overanalysing.

The question was raised in Brad's presser. He didn't really answer it, said that the timing of the injury right on 3/4 time had something to do with it and that they were given an extra couple of minutes at the break to rejig the team structure; that Ess had no complaint about the way it was managed.

I suspect in the umpire review it would be noted as an error, just lucky it didn't impact the game or the player. The stretcher coming out as the clock was still on and play still going is definitely not supposed to happen. Was a weird spot for Jones to go down, none of the umpires seemed to realise.

Davi Kings eyes get closer and closer together every year.
I’ve actually done some analysis on this and I think you might be on to something…
This is David King at the 2017 AFL season launch:

Big balls up. Ball was in play while the runner was running the stretcher out. It didn't play out but there is a world where North shoot the ball out and she is actually in the play, potentially gets involved in a collision, impacts play, someone hurts themselves on it, etc.

Process failed in that regard.

I might be misremembering it but there was also the fact the ball was thrown in in our forward pocket with about 5 seconds left, someone snapped a point what I thought was very clearly before the siren and the umpire just said 'no score', it certainly seemed like the umps decided just to wave the last 5 seconds off and end the quarter early.

The ball was in play, kicked before the siren, so it was either a point to us, or if the ball missed completely or we infringed in any way or kicked it OOF, it's a free to North.

Shambles, really, it almost ended up costing us.

I’ve actually enjoyed this season more than any other since 2016.

We’re shit. Everyone knows it. I think we need to keep that in mind when watching us. Just enjoy the future stars like Roberts, Reid, Caddy and Kako.

Add Tsatas and Hobbs to that list.

We are one of the youngest and most inexperienced teams playing.

It was nice to grind out the win. Even though North are also young, Dons having 3 players out injured in the last quarter showed we had some mettle not to wilt to pieces. That counts for something.

Tsatas to me isn't ready just yet. I dont see the skills, positioning or tackling. So to me he needs to evolve and or bulk up. He's young so there is time.

I dont see it mentioned but I think Setterfield has been a big bonus to our midfield. As well as the physical plays, tackling, marking, he has been able to kick targets into fwd50 nicely, instead of the Hail Mary 50m kicks into pack marks. We need a backup option for him if he gets injured. I dont think we have any other player that can do what he brings to the team.

North I think will be a very good team. Got the ruck, great mids, fwds. Defence is a worry. Maybe after this season we see them taking the next step.
We were a bit lucky to win, thats football.

My frustration is having to watch Andy McGrath and Ben McKay for the next 6 years panic and cost us goals. They'll continue to let our talented kids down.

If you're scraping for positives from this, it's that

I tell myself this every week and deep down I believe it but unlike 2016, this team has been wanting to reach for the bottle to kill the frustration.

Man, this post game is just sad.

Both sets of supporters just want to talk down how shit they are, and therefore how shit the other team must be for that result to have occurred.

North fans: “We were awful, and they still only beat us by less than a goal. Any other team would have killed us. Essendon are shit.”

Dons fans: “We were awful, and had 3 injuries, and they still couldn’t beat us. North are shit.”

Unfortunately, both sets of fans are correct. These two teams along with west coast and Richmond are pretty much the bottom of the barrel…we just happen to be the best of that lot.

Said in the pregame thread that these are two fairly even teams playing off, and that no one should be offended at that. It is where we are. The sooner as a supporter you accept that, rather than “can’t believe we only juuuust beat _____” the less frustrating this all becomes.

The win streak against North was the only reason I cared about winning this game, I'm happy for us to play the kids and be trash for the rest of the year now.
