There's a couple of things that jumped out in that program, after seeing it and learning of what else was missing out of their tent and on the contents of Carol's purse I don't think they had an accident, I think they were probably murdered. Attacked while they were sleeping.

It certainly seems that way.
An experienced camper isn’t going to burn his own site out like that.

Certainly seems plausible about the hunters especially when there was so many fresh carcass’ so close to the camp site and the evident tampered burnt out camp site.

My take from watching Under Investigation last night:
The missing person specialist (Valentine?) tried to pin down the time they went missing to after the radio call-in but before dark, so he's assuming no-one would fly their drone at night.
The blackberry spraying contractor claimed that the drone was flown over his camp that night, which he thought was rude. Hadn't heard of any blackberry spraying contractor before. No details of what he meant by 'that night' - was it before sunset, or just after when still a bit light, or was it later at night.
Lots of activity pointing to illegal deer hunters in the area.
And a farm worker thinking that a cattle property in that area is one of the most remote in Australia. Ever heard of Carson River?

I thought that was a stretch as well, it's rugged territory but I wouldn't have called it 'remote Australia'.

After watching the program I'll put my money on..

Russel finishes conversation on the radio and decides to fly drone with the remaining light left, Drone goes over someone or people are who not happy with the drone being flown in the area. It's now dark and the couple are approached at their camp, possible already in their tent and sleeping bags. The discussion about the drone gets out of hand (his mate on the program said he could be stubborn and wouldn't take crap). They both are murdered and put in their sleeping bags and the suspects burn the camp and leave in a vehicle with the bodies.

And all of this happens before midnight.

The ABC is calling it an 'item of interest' but say police have not confirmed what the item is, while 9 News is reporting that police confirmed a drone was handed in...

i'm assuming those investigating would have at least attempted to access the cloud in search of possibly uploaded drone footage

in the doco, "under investigation", mention was made of there having been some interference at the crime scene during the days following the russell/clay disappearance, but no indication of what type of interference was given. i gathered the inference was that, whatever the interference, it was thought to be unrelated to the crime.
i speculate the investigator was likely referring to my earlier noted illustration, drawn into the soot on the vehicle's canopy ... look closely ... to my eye, it contains a very basic caricature of each of the missing couple's side facial profiles.
to me this indicates the illustrator MUST have been familiar enough with the couple's facial attributes, hence i disagree that the sooty illustration was unrelated to the crime.

i'm serious, it's not funny.
there are several things of focus in the "sketch", the size ratios are not equal, and they tend to blend into each other.
if you can't see it, i'd need to drop the pic in to an app and individually outline each aspect for those lacking interpretive vision.

are there any other missing persons from the same time frame? in particular, adult female, but younger than the couple who've disappeared?

edited to clarify my seemingly ableist remark

I’d love for you to outline what your looking at, that’s why I asked! Doesn’t look like anything to me. Just blur. Instead of a ridiculous comment (for the blind) just explain.

I've heard enough people familiar with the area say if you get lost for a few days it won't be long until the wild dogs find you, I like the theory that the guy has got lost with the drone and the lady has gone looking for him and got lost as well.
I had a retired family member go for a walk in a park near her home in suburbia Melbourne. Fell down the side of a hill and hurt herself. Took forever for her to get up as nobody was around. I'm guessing at their age if one or both have a fall in deep bush they're toast.

Then eaten alive by bush animals. Seems plausible if there is a plausible explanation for the fire.

But seems like the cops believe it is foul play.

At the very start I thought they were lost but I now think it's foul play as well.

For a so called deserted part of the world there seems to be a few people around the area that night..

there seems to be 2 different aspects drawn, and the 2 fuse together.

top left i see an ape-like male dropping a barbie-like female off a cliff face.
very bottom left, at the base of the cliff, a figure stands, as if with one knee bent, perhaps with the knee resting on a ledge, as they look upwards towards whomever is being dropped down the cliff face from above.
apologies for the crude outline, it's just to give an idea of where to look for what i'v described.

hill and clay's caricatures depict the cliff face ;
their faces are incomplete, with main emphasis on their most obvious features as would be selected if penning a caricature, ie.
hill - very prominent square chin + jowls
clay - googly, baggy eyes + jowls

there are a couple of other small scale figures that i'm still trying to figure out, and there is also an entirely separate illustration at the rear of the canopy, but with a similar theme ie. a male figure cruelly putting someone off a cliff.

i feel very strongly that the couple saw something, or accidentally filmed something that they weren't supposed to see ... perhaps someone being bumped off, rather than drug crops or deer hunters.

... and where are their sleeping bags?

if you REALLY wanted to see, you could/should have just asked without your very facetious "ha ha ha"

however crude my attempt to illustrate,
there you have it.
