wonthaggi wrap up

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

It was cold down there and whoever said there was no wind wasn't there. Not a gale but affected kicking in the last quarter with some diabolical shots.

Wonthaggi is known for that type of weather, but I live there and was at the game and it was neither cold, nor windy, yesterday.

The surface was very good as someone said, the only worry being the cricket pitch.

And you were lucky to get that. I'm VP of the cricket club and former coach and you booted our U16 players off their training ground. (LOL, I don't think they minded TBO).

Normally the council covers the pitch with a heshen type cover and then rolls out the turf over that at seasons end. They only bought that artificial cover to cater for this game.

Did you go on to the ground? What did the cover look like and how well did it sit on the pitch? I didn't go on to the oval and I would be interested in your thoughts. Apparently they are going to keep it their for the entire local footy season rather than covering with the heshen/turf as has been the case in the past.

Tiger cub stars in intra-club

Paul Gough in Wonthaggi
Sportal for afl.com.au

Richmond may have unearthed a replacement for injured star midfielder Mark Coughlan after first-year draftee Shayne Edwards made a huge impression in the Tigers' opening intra-club match of 2007 at Wonthaggi on Wednesday.

Edwards, the Tigers' second round pick (26th overall) in last November's NAB AFL draft, was clearly best afield in a game that mostly featured the Tigers youngsters, with coach Terry Wallace resting nearly all of the club's most experienced players.

Edwards, who hails from North Adelaide, won the ball from the centre at will and impressed not only with his pace but also his disposal in the windy conditions.

paul gough is calling you a liar.

The grass on the pitch looked a bit slippery - not sure if it was or not. The sand traps around it looked the worry, but after each quarter someone came out and raked it smooth. The ground was in top notch condition apart from that little hazard, but didn't see any mishaps, so all's well.

Re the wind, it might not have been considered windy conditions to a local, but it did affect kicking in the last quarter. As I said, it wasn't a gale but did have an effect.

paul gough is calling you a liar.

LOL. I don't see my name anywhere in that article.

Maybe he spends too much time sitting on his arse in an office and doesn't know the difference between wind and a breeze. Or maybe I've lived in Wonthaggi too long and don't know the difference between wind and gale force winds. LOL. Perhaps I've become immune, but our local footballers can still hit targets and they play in far worse weather conditions (in regards to wind and rain) than that experienced yesterday. It was no worse than any other day at Waverley or the MCG and AFL footballers shouldn't have a problem with their disposal in those conditions.

I think its okay for us to talk about new recruits and get excited about them. Pity cynical old men like you don't like it.

Signed - older and more cynical old man.
which is all i was doing as pointed out by Bojangles

mine ... and others ... opinions not allowed anymore

certainly appears to be becoming that way ?

Who cares if he runs 3.18s or 3.05s... James Hird is probably the same speed.

He's a natural footballer and before testing he was touted as top-10 material in the superdraft, that is a massive feat. Also I believe there was an outside issue that may have related to him dropping..

About his kicking, some people say he is unbelievable and has brilliant skills on par with Dal Santo, others say he's "hit and miss". Which one is it? Or is he like Tivendale

Get a clue!

FFS its all about the test stats obviously, who cares what they do on the field! :D

did deledio play midfield or hbf, if he played down back that is a disgrace

good to see moore and polak in the backline chuck in bowdo and a few runners and it looks good

the weather was perfect with stuff all wind, shorts tee shirt weather.;)

mate it was blowing a fair bit, were you there? I can concede that maybe at times wonthaggi has stronger winds but it was without a doubt stronger then average wind, me and a mate had a kick in the break and couldn't buy a goal.

PLSC- Lids played on the ball when he was on the ground and looked very sharp, he was one of few who the wind didn't affect, his field kicking was sensational, as it always is.

If that wasn't the wind affecting disposal as some are suggesting, our skill level could be a major concern.

I was taking the piss mate, ( and out of myself as well)

That is still allowed .

Did you read the article in the age today - it should make you happy.

mate it was blowing a benny gale, were you there?

I don't know how many times to say it....it wasn't windy, let alone blowing a benny gale. I live there and the wind is howling 75% of the time. Yesterday wasn't one of those days. There may have been a breeze, but if an AFL player couldn't hit a target in that weather, then they shouldn't be playing AFL. Our local country footballers can handle far worse than that and still execute disposal skills.

PS. I am not having a go at the Richmond players, just that if anyone thought poor disposal was a result of the wind, then it may be time for the Tigers to relocate to the Dome.

Yes, the Richmond recruiting manager made the whole thing up. Guess you got me.

It is also clear to me now that you know more about testing than professional recruiting staff.

Yeh, I was thinking that aswell. Pretty sad isnt it. And I only have half the stuff available at one of the larger clubs in the league. I dont care to imagine what sort of resources the Adelaide's and WC's have at their disposal.

In regard to connors leg speed, from what i saw yesterday i dont think there is alot to worry about, he seems to be one of those cluey players that has more time then most when he gets it despite how quick he is moving, if he's not overly fit as the beep test might suggest he is definitely always hungry for the ball, i saw him twice hit targets from defense and run on and create an option at half forward.

IDGAF you're wise crack was obviously directed at me mate, but it really isnt that bizarre to consider a first year player to be in the best 22, particularly when they have a mature body and the team involved havnt played finals for six years. He looks like a player that would give honest consistent output everytime he gets on the field, if he continues plays like he did yesterday,he will play plenty of football this year. Maybe you should go down next friday mate and see for yourself rather then hose everybody elses hopes down from the sidelines.

you might be right mate, but as ive said it was blowy enough to create some problems. in regard to your country footballers, there were several of them out there yesterday missing targets and being affected by the wind. That Gilliland bloke being an exception, he can play. is he a wonthaggi b&f winner?? because he shouldnt have played that well against afl players.

1. Don't you think it is possible that they were overawed by playing against and in front of AFL players? Perhaps the wind wasn't the only factor affecting the locals.

2. Gilliland - I don't believe he has won a senior B&F with Wonthaggi. Adam Mabilia (formerly Geelong) wins most of them. He didn't play because like me, he is on the wrong side of 30. I think Phil Young played. Do you know how he went? He seems to be widely regarded as the best of the young Wonthaggi players.

3. As for playing well against AFL players, as you mentioned Gilliland did, I suppose it isn't that surprising. The only real difference between AFL players and thousands of others in local and country leagues is opportunity. I'm sure there are many talented players in these leagues that are as good, if not better, than many listed AFL players. For whatever reason, they just don't end up getting the chance. The hard part is getting in the system. Once you're there you have the world at your feet in terms of having the resources to become a better player, it is then up to the player to make sure they don't waste it.

Ben young and Aaron Ware played but i dint notice them like i did the other fella. Agree with what you say about opportunity ect

speak to the loacls and all of them will tell you it was one of the sloppier matches you will see, i was under the impression it was the wind, a fair assumption i thought when 99% of players on the ground were missing targets and struggling at some ends to kick more then 45 metres. Perhaps also it wasnt windy were you were, perhaps also your right and it wasnt windy and the bad skills were contagious, i just wanna know who the sneaky bastard is that was chasing me around with a high powered fan every time i got out of the car.;)

thats an absolute load of drivvel mate

Why so? I think it is a perfectly reasonable post. Do you care to elaborate, or are you just one of those people who posts negatives to other peoples opinions just for the sake of it?
