TAB Sportsbet has just released the odds for next years wooden spoon. Collingwood is favourite at $3.20, followed by Fremantle at $3.50 and Port Adelaide at $6. The Bombers are the outsiders at $251.
So what are some of your predictions for the wooden spoon? I have no idea!

We were tipped to make the eight by a lot of people this year while quite a few of the teams that played significant roles in the finals were expected to finish near the bottom.

It is one of the best things about having a relatively even competition. You never know what might happen.

I think Port Adelaide is a good bet.

Although it is hard to do, as I envisage collingwood, fremantle etc inproving.

My advice to punters would be to wait until at least 7 weeks into the season

yeah but Adelaide Crows are $14 at the moment
and WCE are 21s I think ?

They have to worth at least a small investment at this time because as sainter points out, anyone could end up on the bottom and the Crows and WCE are both as good a chance as any of the other candidates.

cheers

Judging by recent years it will be a team with significant Unrest, or Injuries, or both

Remember the Lions and Demons are favourites for top four but have been spooners recently.

But even in 'bad' years, some teams can find enough G&D to avoid the spoon. Port, Adelaide seem to be rated this year but I think even if they have a bad run, they will avoid the spoon

I can't believe why the so called 'Experts' keep rating West Coast.

I think they possibly have the worst list in the league and yet they are rated less of a chance of winning the spoon than their cross town rivals who are bound to improve next year.

but as has been pointed out, the side that ends up with the most injuries usually is the one to fall away most dramatically. Maybe even a side like North who are getting old, and are looking to the future be the side that drops away most signifficanlty, or it could be someone like the Bulldogs who have had pretty much the same list for a few years.

To be truthful, I don't think Collingwood is such a sure bet, they'll probably finish in the bottom four, but I can't see them finishing last.

West Coast for me - and I'd put some money on it, they are pretty long odds at the moment

Gocatsgo....you haven't done your homework on WC's list I see. WC's list is better than you describe (better than PA, Crows and Collingwood for sure) and it wouldn't be some old vendetta that makes you tip WC would it?

This is a hard one!!!!!!!!! I have narrowed it down to four lol - Freo, West Coast, Port Power, Collingwood. Although I am really not sure at all!!!!!!!!!!

Collingwood will finish last as they don't have a home ground advantage.

Freo/WCE and Port (sob) will all win a few games at home to keep them off the bottom.

ptw

This is really hard to predict. Here in Adelaide a lot of pundits reckon the Power will do better than the Crows. And they seem to think the Power will get into the top 8. It must be relative to where you live.

at face value u have to say the magpies but as we all know footy has its suprises every year there is a club who finished low the previous year rapidly improve which SHOULD be stkilda therefore after considering the options i belive the wooden spoon will be out of 3 west coast, the crows and the pies.with the pies red hot favs a/c they have a lesser of a home advantage than the other 2
cheers!

Visro, Adelaide's list is better than West Coast's, comfortably, my opinion only however. You disagree obviously, I suppose its debateable.

BSA, I hear what you're saying, but the Crows WON'T finish bottom. Pess is right, we should win enough home games and beat some of the not so good teams away. You may think this is unjustified confidence and clear bias but it's my genuine belief. We'll just have to wait and see.....

i remember this time last year how many ppl were tipping melbourne to win the spoon (just check the old threads!), so Im not going to goose myself again.

oh.....stuff it....Collingwood in a canter.

All of you who think that West Coast will finish on the bottom should re-think that.
The Eagles have a fantastic young list which will prove itself this season. With the likes of Chad Morrisson, Michael Braun, Ben Cousins, David Wirrpunda, Phil Matera, Michael Gardiner, Rowan Jones, Andrew Williams and Chad Fletcher we have the capabilities to take it head on!!! Let me see some you name players under the age of 22 with as much experience as those named above.

i dont know... in fact i have no clue but my gut feeling doesn't indicate collingwood for the wooden spoon but as i already said i dont know. i would trust the bets though coz as someone already said they didnt think woey will get the brownlow but he did.
oh well as long as melbourne doesn't get the wooden spoon i'm happy

you might not like it... but i really don't care!
GO THE MIGHTY DEMONS!!! :)

Apart from Cousins, an out and out champion and Wirrpunda, a class act, but injury prone, the Eagles list isn't that strong, and no, this isn't a grudge against them, they have been great in the past, but now are rebuilding.

Jokovich is getting old, as is Peter Matera, Phil isn't exaclty young either neither is McIntosh, Cumming's can only play 5-6 decent games a year and Gherig, McKenna and White are no longer there.

Their younger players such as Braun, Jones, Gardiner, Morrisson aren't exactly world beaters yet, Gardiner is the best of this average lot.

Their recruiting was average to say the least with a few Hawthorn No-hopers picked up. Apart from that all their other young players (except Gardiner) are of the same ilk. 6ft - 6.2, athletic types who can run, kick the occasional goal and match up on an opposition midfielder.

Where and Who are your Key position players, Cummings, Jakovich and McIntosh are about all that is left. There are a lot of holes to fill, if they can succeed with this then they have a chance, but I don't reckon they can

All im saying is that WC has a lot of talent that is untried...some people say that St Kilda will make the eight...what key positions players do they have? None of the people they recruited except Hamil is a good player, Gehrig is by lazy. So i ask you how can people be rating St Kilda above WC?

I would say Collingwood, Port or WCE.

I think the eagles are 'expected' to perform well in 2001 is their almost recent success over the dockers however not in the last derby. The eagles have been around longer than their across town rivals and earned more 'respect' from the media.

Our key position players will be coming along this year, with the likes of Travis Gaspar (CHF or CHB), Darren Glass (Full Back) to mix in with the older blokes. Anyway, I know that all you non-eagles supporters hate us because of our success in the past, so just watch and you'll be proven wrong.
