Well well, interesting forum. There is a variety of every species, varying from opinionated, arrogant to passionate and confident. There is only one missing, the PROUD!! and with pride comes Spirit!! These are the qualities that have kept a Sensational Team Like the DOGGIES in the AFL, a team that hasn't lost it's battle with greed, like the rest of the 15 clubs. So before knocking this club, think very carefully and comprehend that no matter how tough how rich or however strong a team may be supported, THERE ARE SOME THINGS MONEY CAN'T BUY!!!
 
Oh & another thing Bulldog girl, I donated money to your club to keep the alive, as I've done with other clubs, maybe if it was carlton or the pies I might have to think twice, but I don't want any team to fold.

You are one of my favourite Essendon supporters and i don't even know u!!!! You are one of the few supporters of the bigger clubs who genuinely feels for the smaller clubs and wishes to help them instead of rather them go. I'm sure bulldog gal didn't mean it as if to say that everyone else is greedy, but when a team is in our financial state and has been starved of success, u can't help but feel that everyone has financial stability and premierships, and yet still want more.

Let me ask you this. Have you ever heard of a guy called Smorgon?

You should have. He's the President of your club. It was Smorgon and his four-man corporate task force that took over the Footscray Football Club in 1996 and forced it to change its name to the Western Bulldogs. This was done because the name "Footscray" was not considered marketable any more. Smorgon and his cronies were trying to attract a more up-market type of supporter. People with money.

The name was changed even though it was directly against the club's constitution to change the name without a vote of members. A small of group of Footscray loyalists, called the "Footscray Forever Committee" tried to fight the decision but were hoodwinked into accepting a compromise. That's what the tiny letters "F.F.C." on the back of the Bulldog jumper are all about.

Don't kid yourself, Bulldog Gal. Your club is as much caught up in the AFL money rat-race as any other other club.

It's ironical that, after so many people worked so hard to keep the Footscray Football Club afloat in 1989, that the club allowed a group of corporate scum-bags to hijack it only 7 years later.

Footscray Football Club died in 1996. The Western Bulldogs is just another corporate franchise, like every other AFL club.

Yeah, you're right. There are some things that money can't buy.

But the Western Bulldogs are NOT one of them.

Thank you for realising that I have the best interest of footy at heart, no matter who, though sometimes it's a bit hard with people like Alf & Magpie girl. We all love footy so should be doing everything in our power to keep it going the way it is, all 16 teams, no more merging or relocating rubbish.

I too would have rathered see the club remain as Footscray, but ask me whether I would rather see the Footscray Football Club die or see the Western Bulldogs live, and i think the answer is self explanatory from my nick. Greedy may not have been the correct term and I wouldn't consider ALL teams as greedy, but a guarantee that ensures my team in its own right in 10 years time is all i want, more than a premiership, more than a star team, more than anything. Is wanting your team to survive greedy?? I think that is of the most importance for all involved with the club.

I'm not exactly sure whether Bulldog Gal meant success/financial stability or something else, but please don't take it out of context. We just want survival (one premiership during my life time would be nice though

). Nothing more. No millions in the bank, not to be the epitomy of professionalism in Australian Sport, not 5 premierships in a decade. Just survival (and I'M going to get greedy here- loyal supporters, administrators, coaches and players during times of hardship (ala 96- Wallace, Grant, Smith and to a lesser extent, Smorgon as he "jumped on" at our greatest time of need, as opposed when you things are going great guns. If it wasn't for him and his forward thinking, i doubt we would still be around. We don't want to take over the comp, we just want to be a small part of it. If that's greedy, just call me Jack, or John anyone associated with the bulldogs.

Sandie, I don't deny that Collingwood is struggling. And as for life after Malthouse, ask me about that when it happens. The jury is still out on whether Malthouse's influence on The Club will be positive or negative.

As for me wanting a League consisting only of Collingwood, that is patently absurd. I want all two teams to survive. COLLINGWOOD and NON-COLLINGWOOD. Without both clubs football just wouldn't be the same.

Unfortunately NON-COLLINGWOOD is a very powerful club. And I have to respect them. They have, after all, won every premiership bar one since 1959. So any club that can win that many premierships must be pretty good. I take it you support NON-COLLINGWOOD, Sandie. Well congratulations on your 42 premierships in the last 43 years. I sincerely admire and respect such an outstanding achievement.

Now, Westy Boy.

I hear what you're saying. But I guess it all comes down to what constitutes "survival" in modern football. I tend to think that identity is a very important thing to preserve. And a club's name is the primary component of identity. I know that's stating the bleeding obvious ... but at least it's true.

Maybe in Footcray's case it wasn't so important. I don't know. Only Footscray supporters can answer that.

But if it happened to Collingwood, I would feel as though the Club had died. If we suddenly had to become the Northern Magpies or some such name I wouldn't feel as if we were the same Club. Or worse still, if we had to sell our naming rights to a commercial sponsor in order to survive. I can't bear the thought of going to the footy to barrack for the Primus Magpies.

Can you imagine the Speed-Kills Bombers?

Or the Drink-Drive-Bloody-Idiot Tigers?

And don't laugh. That sort of thing is a very real possibility. Once clubs start changing their names and putting economics ahead of tradition anything is possible.

God knows where it will end.

Hey Dickhead Alf, no one tells my woman what to do, I can't believe the crap she puts up with on this site, if I had a chance to meet all you gutless wonders you would be in hospital, Sandie is the most caring, generous person I've ever met, she is totally devoted to football & she gets really upset when people don't feel the same way. It's a one-horse town somewhere on the Nullarbor. Ya sort of get on to the Westgate Bridge and just keep going. You might need a full tank of petrol.

Actually, Westie, you're probably not far from there yourself. It sorta past Footscray, past Sunshine, past Melton, through Crowsville, up to PortaGutta, through Ceduna (watch out for the cops in Ceduna, they're real bastards) and just keep going.

To tell you the truth, If the doggies were re-named the Barking Hounds, I'd love them all the same. It's called Survival.
As long as the foundation that binds this club does not deminish, as long as the dogs have their fighting spirit, their pride, their Passion and Loyal players, Smorgon and co. may do whatever possible, (and have successfully done so), to save the club from extinction. Because that is what will bring REAL PAIN.
Greed is having all things secure, but striving for more.
That's not what we want.
What we aim for is very simple:
A stable place in the AFL.

alf keep up with the times, you will never see the speed kills bombers- tac arent the major sponser of essendon, the future (as they say) is Orange

as for smorgan, i think he is one of the greatest football administrators ever, he has taken a club that was close to hopeless, they were broke, payers werent happy and made them a regular finals team (alf finals are those games played in september after collingwood has finished)
without terry wallace and smorgan the footscray or western bulldogs football club would most likely be dead
and the footscray football club is still alive under the western bulldogs, notice the FFC on the back of their jumpers

now being an essendon supporter i dislike the bulldogs as much as anyone, but long live victorian football and long live the bulldogs, the afl needs clubs like them
