Dear all,
I am a new registered member to BF, however I have been on this forum every day for the last 4 years, so I thought its time for me to register and have my say about my beloved Eagles.
Im not allowed to post a thread yet, so I begin my first reply under this thread, because I believe the reason behind all of our failures this year falls upon a hall of famer and great person and individual.. Mr John Worsfold. As much as I love him,. his expiry time has def arrived and if you allow me I will explain to you why I ( a fanatic Eagles supporter just like most of you guys) think he failed big time this year.
Let me begin with what I have read in this forum and that every one keeps mentioning the reason behind our failure was Injuries and blaming injuries on our results. I profoundly disagree with this for several reasons,.every team gets injuries and every team has to deal with them. part of the game. as a matter of fact I think sometimes injuries are a great indicator on evaluating the of the coach and measuring his coaching skills and ability to adapt to difficult circumstances.I will explain what I mean later. Yes we had injuries this year, I agree, but that is not the reaosn why we are sitting where we are sitting on the ladder. we had way more serious injuries last year ( JK was out season, Lecca was out season, and few more long long term injuries last year, like kerr, nic nat, glass and nicko i think) and we still managed to finish 5th( should have really finished 4th). This year in all honesty we had a decent squad for the first 8-9 rounds, good enough on paper to win at least 5 of the first 8, how is it that we go backwards this time?, with fit JK, fit midfield( so called our A grade brigade). we drop games we should never have dropped. so when you wanna mention injuries, just rewind back to last year and explain to me how we managed to string that many wins without 8-9 of our stars for the entire season??
After watching every game of the eagles more than once, it is clear what the problem is,and this is my opinion, the problem is woosha and his coaching..period.. almost every team in the league knows how to counteract woosh's game plan. and almost every team has beaten us, the ones who havent like stkilda, adelaide or north Melbourne and even brisbane ( all close games mind you) probably lacked personnel or experience otherwise they would have beaten us too which will happen if we continue like this.
Now as a coach you have certain KPI you need to hit and for woosh this year they should have been:
not only we lost too many games at home, we have not managed to win a game against top 8 teams, why is that?? I tell you why, its mr worsfolds stubborn approach on a game plan that is heavily reliant on accurate kicking and way too much pressure on our quarter backs who play the intercepting role( whom are hurn and watters).that is ok when you have full strenght squad.. but which team in AFL doesnt have their share of injuries.. we suffer the most compare to other teams when we get injuries because the game plane is actually based on certain individuals rather than actually a game plan. Sydney can have goodes, jetta, reid, shaw out and still do the job.. Freo can have pav, mundy, hill, sandillands and Mcpharlin out and still do the job. same for hawks, Geelong, who are leading the pack.Collingwood cant cuz Buckley is not an A grade coach..yet..
- Make top 4 this year ( failure)
- Make top 8 at least ( will not make it..another failure)
- win more games at home than lose, try not to drop a single one at subi( another failure)
- Match committee selection overview ( another failure)
My issue with woosh is his game plan, he has been found out and he is too stubborn to admit it, his game selection is tragedy at times, I do not understand what Adam selwood brings to the team, I do not understand what Ash smith brings to the team. I do not understand when i am sitting in my house and watching the game with minimum to no knowledge of coaching and can clearly see Dogs set their game from the back with bob murphy, and go coast to coast 4 times, and woosh doesnt do anything about it.. I do not understand how Gaff is getting tagged and due to lack of coaching skills by woosh we are not getting the best out of him. I do not understand why he doesnt realise that other midfielders in the comp can easily read NIc nats taps cuz our midfield doesnt have 2nd plan to counterfitt the opposition
All of the above tell me one thing, Woosh lacks the required skills to lead a team to challenge for a flag.. now some of you might say what about 2006. well that team had exceptional midfield and Im not talking about Judd, Cousins, Kerr, Im talking about Chick, stenglein and Braun and Fletcher and Jones who did so much work to create space for our A grade boys. Plus Ken judge had a lot to say in building that team, Ken was a great development coach, credit must be given to him. He was not a great coach. very similar to Neil Craig. so when woosh took over, it was basically on the plate for him.Now Game has changed so much since then, but woosh game tactics still very similar to 7 years ago.
I have alot more to say, I will stop now. sorry for the long essay, but I had to get it off my chest. In conclusion Woosh needs to go, period. your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't weighed into this discussion as yet, however I think what people are trying to explain is if you slightly decrease your sample data, say from 1995 - 2012, it is far less complimentary than if you run the sample from 1987.
You could also argue that by the AFL giving us the concessions it did when we entered the competition, it had some influence on how good our list was in 92 and 94 periods. That, coupled with the fact that drafting has become far more difficult, ie. we can no longer pick up an unknown from Kalgoorlie like Kemp from deep in the draft, as all clubs are far more professional as to how they go about the drafting process.
The key in you summary above is 'recent' history. I don't consider the entire duration we have been in the AFL as 'recent'. 'Recent' to me would be more like a 10-15 year sample, over which period we have been above average, winning one flag, with arguably one of the best midfields the AFL has ever seen. We have also won a wooden spoon in this period, lost 2 champions of the club before they were due, and are a fair way off the powerhouse of the competition we once were in the early 90s.
They know what they are doing but they aren't doing the right things.
We need sweeping changes. 25 years for anyone at a professional sporting organisation is a long time. We need fresh people in all aspects of our club that are willing to make the hard calls and stamp a new WCE footprint on this competition.
We need to be the club that opposition clubs are scared about our future rather than have our fans remind them of our successful past.
If you don't get the point WCETRUTH thats you.

Welcome!
I just like to point out in 2012 you said we had JK, Glass, Nic Nat and Kerr out with long term injuries.
JK was not out for the year but did miss a fair chunk but played 9 games
Nic Nat played 22 games.
Glass played 22 and miss 2 from suspension
Kerr played 24 games.
Nico and Lecra were the only LTI's we had last year along with JK's short season. You can get away with having no forward line but when it hits your midfield and your defensive stocks its way worse
We defiantly did not have 8-9 stars out last year.
This year we have had these players our or barely playing:
Waters 7 games - out for the year. When he did play he struggle with fitness
Rosa 9 games - Had a bad injury in the preseason that he has had trouble bouncing back from.
Kerr 10 games - no preason and is still troubled with his knee.
Wellingham 5 games - Looked good in preseason then has done 2 serious ankle injuries
Nic Nat 11 games - no preason at all and is likely out for the year
Hurn 12 games - Out for the year and and i think is our 2nd most important player behind Nic Nat
Scooter 13 games - Injured after the bye and our best tagger.
Shuey 13 games - Our best attacking mid and has missed 4 and no doubt another 2-3.
Masten 16 games - Another one of our best mids and is no doubt gone for they year.
Nikoski - Season over but i am not sure he would have got a game anyway.
Also small injuries to Glass,JK,Embley,Schoey and Butler.
That is a way more massive injury toll than last years!
Thanks for the response,
What I was trying to point out was to emphasis on our poor game plan rather than always blaming injuries as they are out of our control. You mentioned this years midfield, well we had scooter, shuey, priddis, masten, gaff, rosa all playing together for a third of the season, non interrupted really, we still dropped games we shouldnt have, we also shoul;d beat dogs with our second team really.. based on what we are aiming for....scooter got injured against hawks, prior to that he played every game i believe, shuey played heaps of games also.my issue is with game plan, seems like we only have one plan, and if it doesn't work we are in trouble.
I appreciate your response, and you are correct about some inaccuracy in my comment before as i checked it again.my apologies... But Im gonna go as far as saying if next year we get zero injuries, have our full squad for entire season, we still wont win the flag with woosh as a coach, why??? because the coach is not good enough, he will get out coached by Mick, Ross LYON, and Longmuire ( If i spelt it right) hands down. too slow to react, too predictable, even with waters and Hurn back.
I love Eagles, it just hurts to watch a team with promising talents really look confused at times on the pitch. slow, not physical enough, not hungry enough. they are just bored and tired of the losing strategy in my opinion. I hope I am wrong.
Well, I did say we were above average over that period...Best midfield yes...but one of them created big problems for us...and even a second mid had issues too.....that maybe impacted a second flag in the 2000's.
So, from 1995 - 2012 how many teams havent won a flag?? We have done well, and maybe we aren't far off again. Positivity....and a cracking can do attitude..go along way.

ARE THERE ANY AFL TEAMS MISSING FROM THIS LIST THAT DIDNT GET A FLAG IN THIS PERIOD....REAALLLLY????
Dude....why get lost in emotion. Mick has won one flag since leaving the Eagles....Lyon has won none. Are you sure Woosh gets outcoached...or is he gutsy sticking to his philosophy that each guy has to fulfill his role. Dont you think that maybe Woosh is aware that others want him to be like Mick or Ross?? Hes a strong person Nima, and it takes guts to hold your ground when everyone i criticising you.....Wooshas biggest asset is he doesnt give a F..K what others say...he sticks to his beliefs. He has built more depth into our squad than we ever had around 2006. Remember, in 2010 he was fisted....but in 2011 he was the AFL coach of the year. Look at it this way, did Woosha change between 2010 and 2011??...no he didnt.....but everyone else changed their opinion. Interesting isnt it, how when your winning everyone raves on, and when your going not so well people put the boots in hard. But this is why Woosh is a champion, not some flog who goes with the easy flavour of the day...whatever that may be.
I gotta say though, you writing is very good, and thoughtful, but you are swayed by emotion. Champions are made of the good steel.
Agreed. Just deleted a couple of dozen posts and handed out a couple of cards.Well this thread has degenerated rapidly...
There is a lot of name calling and more personal insults being thrown around. Perhaps everyone should just pause a moment before posting. It has become very unpleasant reading.

there should be a 'recycle bin' of mod-deleted posts so that we can gaze and snicker at the offensiveness and rank stupidity from behind a glass wall, so to speak.

If anyone wants to keep going you are on very thin ground, this isn't the place to get personal.
Whilst I am of the opinion that we need new blood in the coaches box and that Woosh needs to go, he did do something in 2011 and 2012 to get us back up again. Its no mean feet to equal the record for the biggest ladder jump in AFL history (16th to 4th).
I remember in 2010 when everyone was calling for his head, how did we feel when we started winning the following year? Can he do it again?
