We lost one by less than a kick and then won one and then it all turned to shit. Cuz got suspended and sacked and Judd got the groin problem and at the end of 07 we lost them both. That slammed the window shut when we were in full flight so it's hard to blame woosha for that unless we blame him for not managing Cuz etc better.
He's got his faults for sure but is he partly a victim of our poor recruiting particularly with regards to midfield talent. If we had taken Fyfe instead of shepherd or others instead of Weedon and Swift etc etc we may be performing a lot better and not be having this discussion?
I think our main problem is an underperforming and undersized midfield.

Agree, I think our biggest issue is the raft of top 25 picks that have failed for us of late. Whether that was recruiting or coaching related, nobody here knows but its been a dogs breakfast really. Not only the players themselves but the recruitment of so many similar types over 2-3yrs which caused Ebert and Stevens to leave. Whether they would have left anyway or where any good are beside the point, we showed no foresight and ignored size and speed and were left with medium sized average.

Eagle87 what do you think of McKenna, as a coach?

It's hard to say given the unusual situation he's in. Until this year its been essentially a development role and last year you saw some examples of him not being completely sure how best to do that. So he and his list are developing still. That said, they are scary talented and his game style seems to play to their strengths as far as pace goes and once one or two of their tall forwards genuinely arrive we are all in trouble ....

I think he's identified the best players and developed them pretty quickly but O'Meara for example was ready when I first saw him aged 16 - so its hard to really know how could a normal AFL coach Bluey is.

He's got more natural flair about him than Woosh and he works a fair bit with the most left field coach of the last 30 years, so I expect that will make them the more exciting style team their talent warrants ...

Juries out is what I'm saying ....

Why does your next coach necessarily have to be some one already in the AFL system.
The ex Adelaide crows backman coaching in the SANFL comes extremely highly rated (sorry the name escapes me at the moment). Not trying to be a smart arse but is the step up from WAFL SANFL or the Vic based leagues that huge that a stand out in these lower grades would not be better than a middle of the road assistant already in the AFL system.

Are you speaking of Nathan Bassett?

Ebert and Stevens left because Worsfold still played Adam Selwood, Embley and Priddis even when all the fans could see long term they are not the solution. Stevens should've replaced Priddis and Ebert replaced Embley but Worsfold has his favourites which is one big reason he has got to go.

Thats it. Is he still available or did he get a gig somewhere as an assistant?

I'm unsure as to what he's doing now. I only know about him being talked up by the SA clubs when reading bits from those two boards, but from what I read, it sounded like he's still in the SANFL. Probably be best to ask Chris25 on your board, for he follows the SANFL quite closely.

Currently coaching Norwood who won the 2012 Premiership and sit at present 1st on the ladder.

Yep, understand what you are saying but he has identified a style of play that suits the players and I think he, himself, says that Ablett is a very large part of the development of the younger players.

Is being an assistant AFL coach a necessity to get the top gig?
Did Heard or Voss work anywhere as assistants before their appointments.

Hird and Voss did not. But Voss is called "crazy Vossy" for a reason and looks to have taken a few years to find his footing, plus now Mark Harvey is there too, while Hird has had Bomber working very close with him since day one.

Eagle87 what do you think of McKenna, as a coach?

McKenna has turned things around fantastically.

I am sure its pure coincidence that he discovered the secret of coaching, the minute St Malcolm of Left Field resigned from the board and took on an active 'mentorship' in the coaches box

I think Choco is the next big "new" coach to return

Stevens is a sub for the bulldogs and struggles -goes to ground, no run and poor decisions . Ebert has had his moments with port but is regularly not in their best - he still shows the same problems under pressure he showed with us. Next you will be linking McDougall to woosha

take those blue and yellow glasses off. hes been one of their best since switching over.

stevens granted but it was always gonna take some time to pick up (hes actually in their 18 now) but ebert has been a god send to port.

meh

ebery fails under pressure for port and reverts to poor disposal and poor decisions. good kid but not what we need and not in our best 22.

Plenty of players look good in poor side and in easy wins - look at the half time in our game against port - on merit we are a 10 goal better side.

remember ebert failed big time in finals

he was also 2 years younger compared to today.

he wouldve def been in our best 22 the same way how masten has proven himself and also is regarded in our best 22.

on merit we are a 10 goal better side? ha. if you told me that in round 1/2 maybe but now im seriously doubting a few from the squad.

and for the record port havent had easy wins throughout the year. theyve taken some big scalps

I agree. At this point in time, we are definitely not a 10 goal better side. Given we've lost the match between them earlier this year, it's pretty clear which is the better side.

The Hagdorn report re Woosh is depressing.

Coupled with the article about Brown being offered 3 years it's adding up to an uber depressing week.

Woosh has not been a great coach. He's been decent. He did what he should have with one of the finest starting midfields (ruck included) ever seen. Other than that we've been just ok and at times very poor.

He is clearly not good game day & tactically. He has not shown himself to be a great player development guy and he has often stubbornly backed his own view and been found wrong.

2 or 3 more years of same same with some tweaks here and there will have us 5th to 10th depending on injuries/draw etc ....

He has done 12 years. Only the GREAT coaches get tenures like that anywhere...

He just isn't. And leadership with bollocks would know that and act accordingly.

Woosh has been a great coach .

Horrific circumstances though, in his defense.

yes...a little hard to win multiple premierships when some stars were off the chain personally.

Geez I can guess what the response to that is going to be

pure gold...

Ebert was a turnover king. I was at the final he played in Melb before he was dropped in 11, he didnt touch the ball....well...i think he had approx 5 touches all day. A few weeks earlier hed been dropped as well and when he came back in the team against Geelong in the regular season he stared...put his head over the ball. Woosh dropped him cos in the final he just switched off totally.....you cannot have a guy up and down in effort like that. Wc rated him, and hed had a huge amount of work put into him, when probably alot of clubs would of flicked him due to his uncoordinated early efforts. WCE built him up, and then he dropped the lip after being dropped in the finals and left, and in his defense he said he wanted to go home..cant argue with that. WCE made Ebert what he is today, but hes not the solution, hes just not that good.

Woosh has been a great coach .

you keep telling yourself that.

wouldnt be surprised youll be one of those blind few that when worsfold finally quits football youd lock yourself in a room and cry yourself to sleep squealing "no jooooohhnnnn noooooooooo"

Nahh mate, just acknowledging a truly successful guy.....most people never achieve what Woosh has, and there are reasons for that.

Attitude:)....a positive one.
