Actually, there’s a bit of luck involved, depending on your first guess, which is completely random. But, well done

yeah when I have multiple guesses and it just keeps telling me the same couple of letters are in the wrong spots and none of the new letters are involved its hard

It’s a process of elimination combined with guesswork. You can be lucky and hit on some correct letters first off.

I try to use a combination of those letters - rates, tears, stare etc

STEAL. Going forward, if I don't get many hits, IRONY is my second attempt which hopefully gives me at least 3/5 to work through the rarer consonants with.
